James Rea married Mourning Norfleet, of Gates County, in 1808, and was a prominent merchant in Winton. He died October 24, 1824, and his wife died March 24, 1842. They left one child, Hannah Peck Rea, who was the sole heir of his estate. She was greatly admired and much courted by the beaux of her day. She was greatly admired by W. D. Pruden, Sr., and bis family, and they visited her up to her old age. Her father, James Rea, was born in Boston, Mass., October 9, 1779. Miss Rea married, in December, 1836, Jno. V. Lawrence, son of Elisha Lawrence of this county and his wife Polly Vaughan, a prominent and successful merchant in Murfreesboro. They reared eight children: Capt. L. C. Lawrence, who married, in 1867, Sue E. Southall, daughter of Jno. W. Southall; Mattie A., who marJohn v. Lawrencb. ried, in 1869, S. F. Pearce, of Camden County; James!nt. Lawrence, who married Bettie Pruden, in 1870, of istansemond County, Virginia, and who are the parents of Lloyd J. Lawrence, Esq., one of the county's lawyers; Dr. John C. Lawrence, who married Tibbie Joynes in 1875, from Eastern Shore, Virginia. The Doctor was a very successful and reliable physician in his native town; he died in 1885, and his widow a few years thereafter married Judge Hance, of Baltimore City. The Doctor left no child. Charles A. Lawrence, married Anna Weirsdotz, of Norfolk, Virginia, in 1885, where they now live. Annie married, in 1872, her cousin, John N. Vaughan, a successful commission merchant of Norfolk, Va. mrs. dr. walter rem. lire emily lawrence. Emily B. married, in 1876. Dr. Walter Reid, a celebrated physician in the U. S. Army. William Perry. Pace died soon after the massacre, and his widow, Isabella, married Lieut. William Perry. In 1629 John Smyth and Lieut. Wm. Perry were the Representatives from Pace's Pains, on James River, in the Legislature. Later, Dr. Tyler writes, the Perrys are found at Burk land, on the James River. Such a volume, if it embodied current opinions concerning many early events, such as the pilgrimage of Thomas Hooker, would be of little permanent value; and if our deductions from the records had been so used, without detailed evi dence, the volume would be discredited. The author has been content to adjust some of the foundation stones of our colonial history, and to build thereon with the materials which the records themselves provide. The town of Hart ford has occupied such a place in the Commonwealth that this has been considered the greater service. Nor has it seemed necessary to continue this study into the last cen tury. In 1883 and 1884 a series of articles on the First Hundred Years of the City of Hartford, by Mr. John W. Stedman, was published in the Hartford Sunday Journal. About the same time the reminiscences of some aged citi zens on Old Days in Hartford were preserved in the columns of The Connecticut Post. Many historical papers have also appeared in The Hartford Courant and The H art ford Times. These, with The Memorial History of Hartford County and certain monographs, magazine articles and church histories, have amply covered the field, and are cited in references.
