This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Collection of Oriental Rugs Containing Many Interesting, Unusual and Valuable Specimens, With Some Ikons and d104iles, the Property of Mr. Alexander Arzouyan of Constantinople and New York: To Be Sold by His Order Wednesday, Thursday Afternoons, May Fourteenth, Fifteenth, at Two-Thirty O'clock In the West we buy a rug. For the dining room, a rug for the drawing room, a small rug for the fireplace and a mat for the bed side. A rug is primarily an object of utility. In the East it expresses pleasure, joy in life and meditation on life. There we cannot get enough of rugs, enough of joy, enough of meditation. We lay rugs one on the top of the other: the coarsest below, the finer ones on top. The real pleasure begins at the third layer. We enjoy rugs not only with our eyes, but also with the contact of our feet. We walk gently: we do not trample on our great pleasures and on our subjects for medi tation. It is all, of course, simply a matter of how much imagination we are able or willing to put into the things that surround us. This cannot be better illustrated than by a little anecdote inciden tally related by Mr. Arzouyan. He called in Constantinople on an old man who had been dealing in rugs all his lifetime. He found the old man absorbed in contemplation of a portion of a very fine and old Ghiordes prayer rug - the colors mellow and soft, as only a life of centuries can mellow them. The design was intricate but beautiful, and the old man said: When I look at this rug, I should like to smile joyfully and to cry at the same time. I should like to smile, full of joy, when I think that somebody was able to make such a beautiful rug; and I should like to cry when I think that such a beautiful piece of work has been cut to bits, worn out, and eaten by moths. Yet by the will of Allah such is the course of all that lives, and I see that this rug is like my own life: it is worn out and decayed, and won't last much longer. But when I begin to think, I see all the beautiful things that were in it; and with memory and imagination, closing my eyes I can see the unmarred beauty of my rug and of my life.
