Book excerpt: A three volume collection of the ghostly tales of Mrs. Oliphant Scottish author, Margaret Oliphant belonged to a well known and highly regarded group of female fiction writers of the Victorian period. Their individual talents are undeniable, but their career paths often followed a remarkably similar pattern. Most were writers of both novels and short stories, all were prolific and able to turn their pens successfully to a variety subjects and themes. Many of them wrote regularly for the periodicals of the day, and Mrs. Oliphant (her usual nom-de-plume) frequently wrote for 'Blackwood's Magazine' and specialised in the creation of tales of domestic realism, historical fiction and the genre for which she is most remembered today, ghost stories. That harshest of literary critics-and one of the finest exponents of the craft of supernatural fiction-M. R. James thought highly of Margaret Oliphant's work in the genre, drawing particular attention in his writings on the subject to her long ghost story 'The Beleaguered City, ' which is included in this comprehensive three volume edition of Mrs. Oliphant's well crafted and chilling tales of the uncanny. In volume one readers will find the novel, 'The Complete Little Pilgrim Series, ' 'The Secret Chamber, ' 'The Land of Suspense, ' 'A Visitor and His Opinions, ' 'Earthbound' and other haunting stories of the strange and unusual. It focuses mainly on the three young siblings, Agnes, Marion, and Charlie. All three of them have a unique gift that makes them special. Agnes is a prolific writer, Marion has enchanting beauty, and Charlie finds his gift as the story moves forward. The novel is told chiefly from Agnes' point of view. She wrote a novel and found a publisher. Following her book's success, she and Marion get invited into society, which leads to some amusing experiences. On the side plot, Mr. Atheling inherited his aunt's place in the country and found the title questioned by an old enemy, Lord Winterbourne. The author introduces more intriguing characters and storylines after the family moves to the country. Marion and Agnes each have their own complicated love story. The novel is a work of fiction, but the part of the story dealing with Agnes's first novel was inspired by Margaret Oliphant's struggles as a young writer.

Download or read book Ladies in Black written by Eunice Hetherington and published by Leonaur Limited. This book was released on 2024-09-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first Leonaur collection of outstanding tales by female supernatural fiction authors For those who know comparatively little about the fiction of the supernatural and weird it may be that, if they were asked to name its most significant writers, names that came mind might be mostly male. For example, the literary craft of M. R James is undeniable. Henry James remains notable for, 'The Turn of the Screw', whilst Charles Dickens will be forever renowned as the creator of the immortal Mr. Scrooge from his, ' A Christmas Carol'. For those who know more of the subject, their view would almost certainly be different. The 'Golden Age' of the second half of the 19th century and the early 20 century brought forth a host of writers of this ever popular genre among readers of principally short stories and its finest exponents of were invariably women. In fact, there were so many accomplished lady authors of spine-tingling yarns that one might claim their excellence has led to them being considered collectively, rather than as individuals. Several of these ladies were, of course, outstanding authors in their own rights and Leonaur editions are available dedicated to them. Nevertheless, it is possible that Mrs. Riddle, Edith Wharton, Mrs. Henry Wood, Vernon Lee and Mrs Oliphant, among many others, remain largely unknown to contemporary readers. This series goes some way to remedy that shortcoming, but also showcases other writers who remain even less well-known-possibly because the canon of their supernatural fiction was not so significant. Enjoy here then, 'The Devil's Motor', 'The Affair at Grover Station', Luella Miller and others, but leave the lights on! Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Book The Open Door and The Portrait

Download or read book The Open Door and The Portrait written by Mrs Oliphant and published by . This book was released on 1881-06 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Margaret Oliphant Wilson Oliphant (born Margaret Oliphant Wilson; 4 April 1828 - 20 June 1897) was a Scottish novelist and historical writer, who usually wrote as Mrs. Oliphant. Her fictional works encompass "domestic realism, the historical novel and tales of the supernatural". The daughter of Francis W. Wilson (c. 1788 - 1858), a clerk, and his wife, Margaret Oliphant (c. 1789 - 17 September 1854), she was born at Wallyford, near Musselburgh, East Lothian, and spent her childhood at Lasswade (Midlothian), Glasgow and Liverpool. A street, Oliphant Gardens in Wallyford is named after her. As a girl, she constantly experimented with writing. In 1849 she had her first novel published: Passages in the Life of Mrs. Margaret Maitland. This dealt with the Scottish Free Church movement, with which her parents had sympathised, and which had met with some success. It was followed by Caleb Field in 1851, the year in which she met the publisher William Blackwood in Edinburgh and was invited to contribute to Blackwood's Magazine. The connection would last for her lifetime, during which she contributed well over 100 articles, including a critique of the character of Arthur Dimmesdale in Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter. In the 1880s she was the literary mentor of the Irish novelist Emily Lawless. During this time Oliphant wrote several works of supernatural fiction, including the long ghost story A Beleaguered City (1880) and several short tales, including "The Open Door" and "Old Lady Mary". Oliphant also wrote historical fiction. Magdalen Hepburn (1854) is set during the Scottish Reformation, and features Mary, Queen of Scots and John Knox as characters. (wikipedia.org)
