Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Present Thesis Fulfils A Long Felt Desideratum In The Field Of Numismatical Studies In India. So Far Our Knowledge About Early Medieval Coinage Of India Has Been Very Poor And Pragmentary. A Systematic And Comprehensive Study Of Sporadic Materials Has Been, For The First Time, Successfully Attempted In This Subject. The Author With Industry And Intelligence Has Collected Thematerials, Sorted And Collated Them And Reconstructed The Structure Of His Subject. It Is Based On The Discovery Of New Facts And Fresh Interpretation Of Already Known Facts And Current Theories. It Is Both Exhaustive And Critical. It Positively Forms A Valuable Contribution To The Literature Of Numismatics And Tends Generally To The Advancement Of Knowledge. The Present Work Shows The Painstaking Labour, A Critical Study Of The Subject, And Above All Original Suggestions Which Undoubtedly Enhance The Value Of The Dissertation Like The Present One. The Up-To-Date Bibliography Shows An Extensive Range Of Study In The Political History Of The Dynasties As Well, Without A Thorough Knowledge Of Which The Present Attempt Could Hardly Have Been Possible. The Author Has Rightly Rejected The View Of D.W. Macdowall, On The Coins Of Gangeyadeva. D.W. Macdowall Is No Doubt A Great Numismatist, And I Am Glad To See That A Young Scholar Is Not Afraid To Criticise Eminent Authorities Here As Well As Elsewhere And His Criticisms Are Just And Reasonable. The Magadh University Should Undertake The Task Of The Publication Of This Valuable Work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present work describes the material and moral progress which India had achieved during the paramount sovereignty of the Gupta emperors in the fourth and fifth centuries a.d. It traces the origin and rise of the ruling family to Srigupta (240-280 a.d.) and concludes with the reign of Kumaragupta III (543 a.d.). It discusses the spirit of the age and the various trends in the sphere of Religion, Economy, Society, Education, Administration, Art and Architecture. It seeks to bring together all the facts and data derivable from different sources--literary, epigraphic and numismatic, the accounts of foreign visitors, particularly of the Chinese pilgrim Fa-hien who has left a detached and valuable record of India`s civilization during the reign of Chandragupta II. Herein we get an accurate picture of India`s golden age, the growth of her various institutions, her activities of expansion, colonization and her intercourse with Indonesia, China and other countries. The work is divided into sixteen chapters. It has an index of proper names and an addenda on the hoard of new Imperial Gupta coins discovered at Bayana in Bharatpur. The work is very interesting and instructive and is designed to meet the requirements of the academic student of history and the general reader alike.

Book Economic Life of Northern India in the Gupta Period Cir A D 300 550

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is a study of the economic history of Gupta India as far as it can be re-constructed from the available sources. By utilizing material not hitherto studied in this connection we believe that we have thrown fresh light on several aspects of the subject. The first chapter deals with previous work on the subject, and the sources used. In Chapter II we study the land system. We have made a specially detailed study of the surviving inscriptions relating to the transfer of land, and in several respects have tried to throw new light on the subject. In our study of the units of measurement used we have tried to establish equivalences by thorough examination of the evidence, and for the first time we have also noticed the great demand for land in the Gupta period. Our third chapter deals with the revenue system; in this we have carefully studied the terms used in our sources, and attempted to explain several on which there is difference of opinion among scholars. The fourth chapter, dealing with agriculture and stockbreeding, throws some new light on the conditions of the time, by reference to the works of Varaahamihira and Amara, which have not hitherto been used for this purpose. Our chapter on Industry - the fifth - studies the subject both in the light of the written sources and of archaeology. The sixth chapter on trade and commerce contains sections on both internal and external trade; in the latter section contemporary Western and Chinese sources have been utilized, and throw some new light on India's maritime trade. In our study of labour conditions, Chapter VII, we have collated the evidence of inscriptions and legal texts on slavery, forced labour and hired labour. Chapter VIII deals with corporate economic life; we compare references to this in our own period with those in earlier sources, and conclude that guild organization greatly developed under the Guptas. Our ninth and final chapter deals with the currency system; here we attempt a study of Gupta coinage from the economic point of view, and adduce certain new conclusions from our tests of the purity of Gupta gold coins; we also consider moneylending in the period, and conclude that it greatly increased as compared with earlier times. Our work contains a three appendices; the first is a summary of Varahamihira's forecasts relating to economic life, which we believe are of some significance in assessing the economic situation of the time; the second is a synoptic table of the contents of the documents relating to land-sale of our period; and the third appendix gives the results of our specific gravity tests of Gupta coins.
