The coins come from a variety of sources - the Oxford Index, national and local museums, private collections, metal detectorists, dealers' catalogues and stock. Detailed analysis of the coins makes the identification of a number of mints possible. Size, metallurgical composition and weight are scientifically assessed, and Bean is able to draw some broad historical conclusions on dynastic structure and geographical spheres of influence.
