Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Codex Sangallensis: A Study in the d104 of the Old Latin Gospels The following pages are of interest only to a very small circle of readers. They are concerned with the history and the developments of the early Latin translations of the New Testament; and form an appendix to my recent work on the Codex Bezae. If the results arrived at are somewhat scanty, I do not altogether feel free to withhold them; for the problems which they touch upon are important. Many people are still standing where Augustine stood when he implied that there had been an infinite number of translators of the Gospels. It is time that this position was abandoned, and a number of associated positions; and that we formed a right idea of the nature, time and place of production of the primitive Latin text from which all other Western texts are derived. Perhaps this tract may help some student towards the necessary rectification of his ideas. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Old Latin Gospels

Download or read book The Old Latin Gospels written by Philip Burton and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 2000-11-16 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first overall study of the texts and language of the Old Latin Gospels, the versions of the four Gospels that predate the Vulgate of Jerome. In this book three main questions are addressed. Do the various extant manuscripts represent the remains of many originally separate versions, or local variants of a single main tradition? How do we analyse the translation techniques used to produce these texts? What do these translations tell us about the development of post-classical, non-literary Latin, and vice versa? Dr Burton approaches the issue of monogenesis versus polygenesis through a systematic analysis of the vocabulary of each individual Gospel. He reassess the traditional description of these Gospels as 'literal' and 'vulgar', examining the extent to which these terms are meaningful and applicable.

Book The Old Latin Manuscripts of the Gospel of Luke

Download or read book The Old Latin Manuscripts of the Gospel of Luke written by Annette Weissenrieder and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-12-31 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Codex Vercellensis is one of the great treasures of the Vercelli library, containing the four Gospels. Written during the fourth century, it is the oldest remaining Latin manuscript of the Greek New Testament and one of the most important witnesses to the early understanding of the Gospels. In this edition, Weissenrieder and Visinoni provide the Latin text of the work parallel to spectral images, indicating abbreviations, lineation, foliation and staurograms as well as a (reconstructed) critical edition with references to the most important texts of the Old Latin tradition as well as Greek and Syriac manuscripts and a commentary to this unique Latin translation. The analyses involved will be: (1) digital methods, (2) philological and theological, (3) translation theories in antiquity as well as (4) genealogical. The authors call into question assumptions about the text preserved in the manuscript, arguing that it represents an early stage of the Latin Gospels. The manuscript will be examined in light of its wide-ranging cultural and historical context. As such, the project aligns itself methodologically with the field of manuscript studies and attempts to integrate the specialized expertise of various disciplines in the study of a single object.

Book The Daily Discoveries of a Bible Scholar and Manuscript Hunter A Biography of James Rendel Harris 1852 1941

Download or read book The Daily Discoveries of a Bible Scholar and Manuscript Hunter A Biography of James Rendel Harris 1852 1941 written by Alessandro Falcetta and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-05-31 with total page 707 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full biography of James Rendel Harris (1852-1941), Bible and patristic scholar, manuscript collector, Quaker theologian, devotional writer, traveller, folklorist, and relief worker. Drawing on published and unpublished sources gathered in the United States, Europe, and the Middle East, many of which were previously unknown, Alessandro Falcetta tells the story of Harris's life and works set against the background of the cultural and political life of contemporary Britain. Falcetta traces the development of Harris's career from Cambridge to Birmingham, the story of his seven journeys to the Middle East, and of his many campaigns, from religious freedom to conscientious objection. The book focuses upon Harris's innovative contributions in the field of textual and literary criticism, his acquisitions of hundreds of manuscripts from the Middle East, his discoveries of early Christian works – in particular the Odes of Solomon – his Quaker beliefs and his studies in the cult of twins. His enormous output and extensive correspondence reveal an indefatigable genius in close contact with the most famous scholars of his time, from Hort to Harnack, Nestle, the 'Sisters of Sinai', and Frazer.
