Book Teenage Romance

Download or read book Teenage Romance written by M. Marsh K. M. Marsh and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains several short stories about the simple, innocent romance between a boy and a girl that reflects a much simpler time. A time when just holding hands and giving that certain boy or girl a special look gave you huge butterflies in your stomach and that breathless feeling of excitement and wonderment of, "Does he like me? I mean REALLY like me?" or "Man I hope that look means she likes me, a lot!" These stories are about a young man not afraid to stand up for his lady and willing to risk his own safety to rescue her. I believe a "real" man is NOT afraid to cry and in my stories when someone's heart is breaking he is not afraid to show his true feelings. So grab the tissues, find a comfortable place to sit, pick up this book and be prepared to get lost in a world of good, old fashioned romance. Happy reading!

Book Nightclub

    Book Details:
  • Author : George Rigakos
  • Publisher : McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP
  • Release : 2008
  • ISBN : 0773533613
  • Pages : 285 pages

Download or read book Nightclub written by George Rigakos and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2008 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last thirty years bouncers have emerged as iconic gatekeepers of contemporary cool, exclusivity, and social capital in urban centres around the world. In this groundbreaking empirical study, Rigakos critiques the supposed liberating and expressive potential of nightclubs by theorizing them within the linked themes of risk, consumption and security in late capitalism. People attend nightclubs to be seen and see others, to consume others as aesthetic objects of desire and to elicit desire in others – the desire to be desired. This 'synoptic frenzy', according to Rigakos, fuses surveillance and aesthetic consumption. It fetishizes bodies and amplifies social capitals, producing optic violence and crises of respect fuelled by alcohol. At closing time, populations flow out of the haze of the nightclub and onto city streets, from private spectacle to public nuissance. Mirroring the general late capitalist compulsion to binge and purge, the nightclub's spectacle of consumption produces a litany of unfulfilled courtiers of the night, staggering out of one spectacle and immediatley into another. In this sense, bouncers are not only prime policing agents in the nighttime economy but are producers of an urban risk market – a site of circumscribed transgression and consumption that begins at the door.

Book excerpt: Hard-hitting crime fiction from the author of Tin Men: “Fans of Charlie Huston and Chuck Palahniuk will probably enjoy Darwin’s Nightmare” (Sacramento Book Review). Wilson spent his entire life under the radar. Few people knew who he was or how to find him. Only two people even knew what he really did—working jobs for one very bad man, illegal jobs no one could ever know about. Wilson was invisible—until the day he crossed the line and risked everything to save the last connection to humanity he had, earning the hatred of a vengeful mob boss, a man who claimed he was Charles Darwin’s worst nightmare. Moving even deeper into the underworld of Hamilton, Ontario, he became a ghost in the city—until one day he took on what seemed like a simple job. Steal a bag from the airport and hand it off. No one said what was in the bag, and no one mentioned who the real owners were or what they would do to get it back. But the bag would set into motion a violent chain of events from which no one will escape untouched . . . “A very good series.” —Booklist “Merciless but honest about being monstrous, Wilson is worthy to stand next to Loren Estleman’s Peter Macklin and Donald Westlake’s Parker.” —Publishers Weekly

Book You ll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey

Download or read book You ll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey written by Amber Ruffin and published by Grand Central Publishing. This book was released on 2021-01-12 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER AND INDIE NEXT PICK* Writer and performer on Late Night with Seth Meyers Amber Ruffin writes with her sister Lacey Lamar with humor and heart to share absurd anecdotes about everyday experiences of racism. Now a writer and performer on Late Night with Seth Meyers and host of The Amber Ruffin Show, Amber Ruffin lives in New York, where she is no one's First Black Friend and everyone is, as she puts it, "stark raving normal." But Amber's sister Lacey? She's still living in their home state of Nebraska, and trust us, you'll never believe what happened to Lacey. From racist donut shops to strangers putting their whole hand in her hair, from being mistaken for a prostitute to being mistaken for Harriet Tubman, Lacey is a lightning rod for hilariously ridiculous yet all-too-real anecdotes. She's the perfect mix of polite, beautiful, petite, and Black that apparently makes people think "I can say whatever I want to this woman." And now, Amber and Lacey share these entertainingly horrifying stories through their laugh-out-loud sisterly banter. Painfully relatable or shockingly eye-opening (depending on how often you have personally been followed by security at department stores), this book tackles modern-day racism with the perfect balance of levity and gravity.

Book excerpt: In this multilayered historical novel that explores family secrets and hidden identities, “Woods skillfully captures the disorienting mixture of heady freedom and mounting fear characterizing 1930s Berlin, and the political and gender issues she raises add contemporary relevancy” (Publishers Weekly). Berlin, 1931: Sisters raised in a Catholic orphanage, Berni and Grete Metzger are each other's whole world. That is, until life propels them to opposite sides of seedy, splendid, and violent Weimar Berlin. Berni becomes a cigarette girl, a denizen of the cabaret scene alongside her transgender best friend, who is considering a risky gender reassignment surgery. Meanwhile Grete is hired as a maid to a Nazi family, and begins to form a complicated bond with their son. As Germany barrels toward the Third Reich and ruin, one of the sisters must make a devastating choice. South Carolina, 1970: With the recent death of her father, Janeen Moore yearns to know more about her family history, especially the closely guarded story of her mother's youth in Germany. One day she intercepts a letter intended for her mother: a confession written by a German woman, a plea for forgiveness. What role does Janeen's mother play in this story, and why does she seem so distressed by recent news that a former SS officer has resurfaced in America? Fräulein M. abounds with hidden identities and family secrets. With its multilayered exploration of family ties, hard choices, and the weight of history in our lives, the novel shines light on a brilliant new voice.
