Book excerpt: An anxious kind of month “Any new threats against you?” Pamela seemed eager for my answer while I tsked at her. “Are you actually asking me if I’ve had any further nasty messages left in my mailbox?” There’d been more than a few since she’d gleefully published my first column. I figured there’d be pushback, but threatening to hurt my dog, my business and my koi? Unacceptable. And while Crew seemed to think none of the threats were real, he was still worried, though he never once asked me to stop writing because he was a smart, smart boy. Tensions are high as a pending election pits incumbent mayor Olivia Walker against Patterson lackey Geoffrey Jenkins, threatening Crew’s job as sheriff and his place in Reading. Fee and her mother, meanwhile, agree to assist the owner of a new hunting retreat with the first batch of guests. To their horror, not only are they cut off from the rest of Reading by an accidental beaver dam demolition, they are forced to investigate a murder while Fee wrestles with her past and the fact she’s still not over her ex. cozy murder mystery series, cozy murder mystery, cozy murder mystery books, cozy murder, cozy murder mysteries, animal cozy mystery, animal cozy

Book Virtual Weaponry

Download or read book Virtual Weaponry written by Aaron Tucker and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the convergent paths of the Internet and the American military, interweaving a history of the militarized Internet with analysis of a number of popular Hollywood movies in order to track how the introduction of the Internet into the war film has changed the genre, and how the movies often function as one part of the larger Military-Industrial- Media-Entertainment Network and the Total War Machine. The book catalogues and analyzes representations of a militarized Internet in popular Hollywood cinema, arguing that such illustrations of digitally networked technologies promotes an unhealthy transhumanism that weaponizes the relationships between the biological and technological aspects of that audience, while also hierarchically placing the “human” components at the top. Such filmmaking and movie-watching should be replaced with a critical posthumanism that challenges the relationships between the audience and their technologies, in addition to providing critical tools that can be applied to understanding and potentially resist modern warfare.

Book Your Security in South Africa

Download or read book Your Security in South Africa written by Craig B. Roseveare and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is primarily about securing your home against potential unwanted intruders and keeping your family safe. The rise in violent crime affecting my country stems directly from an increase in criminal behavior and farm attacks, resulting in loss of innocent lives in my country. The message in this book goes out to all innocent, law-abiding citizens of South Africa. It is time to take a stand and prepare yourselves against becoming victims of the lawlessness plaguing our country. The authorities themselves face great challenges, numerous obstacles, and insufficient support. As a result, we are losing the battle against all crime and, particularly, violent crime. It is now up to individual citizens to change their mind-set and become unbeatable adversaries of the criminal element. I dont advocate vigilantism or breaking the law in order to achieve this. What I suggest instead is that people need to develop the mental and physical skills to avoid violence in the first place and then, if necessary, use a level of violence higher than that which would be imposed on them in a conflict situation.

Book The Golden Eagle and the Fiddle of Doom 2 Protectors of Weapons

Download or read book The Golden Eagle and the Fiddle of Doom 2 Protectors of Weapons written by Fergal Joe and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story is about a man called Rhymes Ramose and the way he tried to destroy the world after a man called King Hovercraft killed his sister Hanneck Ramose. It also tells the story about how people tried to stop him from destroying the world for Rhymes Ramose holds the rest of us responsible for his sisters death. This is the second book in the series the way the last story began. The story begins when a plane crashes in a desert. The pilot asks a man called Captain John Coiners why a ship is left in the desert. The pilots name is Keith Black. John tells him that he was the captain of the ship and that the ship is called the Red Dragon. He also tells him the history about how they found the Fiddle of Doom and that his son Michael burnt a Golden Eagle and that Michael was put into prison. He tells Keith that he would do anything for his son. He tells Keith Black about a man called Treeon Littlewood and the story that he told him and the crew of the Red Dragon. The way the first book ended and the way the second book begins. Thousand Boil meets The Black Knight and everyone from the Underworld heads off to Africa to try and find the weapons that are buried in a Mountain called Mount Kina. Rhymes Ramose and his army have come to earth and are starting to take out the human race. They also meet a prince called Prince Indiana Jones who is the son of King Dave Jones. King Dave Jones has gone with Thousand Boil and his army to Africa. When they get there they meet up with two giants, their names are Big-foot and Horses-ash. They are the keepers of the gates and the protectors of weapons. They are standing outside Mount Kina and they are there to stop people from taking the weapons out of Mount Kina. However when they hear that the Black Knight is with Thousand Boil they let some of Thousand Boils army walk into the mountain. As soon as Thousand Boil sees the weapons he and his men take them out of the mountain and the story begins. You might be wondering where this story came from. Well I will tell you. It came into my head after I was watching a program called Horizons. On the program I heard them talking about a desert that turns into a sea every now and again. So I thought to myself if a desert can turn into a sea then why not have a sea turn into a desert? Then I thought to myself, why would anyone want to go to a place like that? So I thought what if someone had burnt a rare bird like a golden eagle and was put into prison and the only way that they could get out was for someone else to find one to replace the one that was burnt. So I started to write the story then I thought it would be really boring telling a story like that. Then the Lord of the Rings came out and I got my thinking cap on and thought instead of having a ring with power why not have a fiddle with the power to take an immortals soul. Then I started thinking what would be the best way to start to tell the story of the history of the fiddle of Doom so I decided to have it placed in a cave and for one of the crew of the Red Dragon to play it. Then I thought, why not have an immortal to tell the history behind the fiddle of Doom? Then along came Treeon Littlewood to tell the story. So I hope you like the story for if you do I will write another one for I am hoping to write three books on this subject. It has taken me about two years to write this story so I would like for someone to buy it so that my work will not be in vain. I would also like people to tell me what they think of it.

Book Gunfight The Battle Over the Right to Bear Arms in America

Download or read book Gunfight The Battle Over the Right to Bear Arms in America written by Adam Winkler and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2011-09-19 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A provocative history that reveals how guns—not abortion, race, or religion—are at the heart of America's cultural divide. Gunfight is a timely work examining America’s four-centuries-long political battle over gun control and the right to bear arms. In this definitive and provocative history, Adam Winkler reveals how guns—not abortion, race, or religion—are at the heart of America’s cultural divide. Using the landmark 2008 case District of Columbia v. Heller—which invalidated a law banning handguns in the nation’s capital—as a springboard, Winkler brilliantly weaves together the dramatic stories of gun-rights advocates and gun-control lobbyists, providing often unexpected insights into the venomous debate that now cleaves our nation.

Book excerpt: After the mysterious disappearance of her parents, eight-year-old Hadley Meadows was left behind in a building the world didnt know about. However, this building had groundbreaking technology within that gave Hadley a chance to do almost anything. Hadley would inherit the DimensionCast, a revolutionary pod shaped supercomputer that puts her in a sleep like state, then with the aid of her brain, constructs a virtual world she can inhabit and manipulate at her own will. This virtual reality, called the Pseudoplex, became her digital cosmos that housed all of the content she would go on to create. Hadley spent so much time in the Pseudoplex that she no longer identified with the outside world. Using her ever refining creative abilities, she constructed a virtual body for herself to manifest. She called it her avatar, and used it to substitute her own identity within the Pseudoplex. She named her avatar Animi, leaving behind her birth name for the real world. Hadley was an isolated daughter of missing parents, but when she laid in her DimensionCast and entered the Pseudoplex as Animi, she became a creator. She built cities, mountain ranges, forests, and towns in her Pseudoplex, and eventually filled those places with artificial intelligence that resembled other people. Animi called these people NPCs, and their artificial intelligence became more advanced, further immersing Animi into the world that she had built. Years later, Animi and her NPCs had put together an entire planet within the Pseudoplex that they could coexist on. This virtual planet was named Swisaril, and it would develop an economy, politics, laws, cultures, and celebrities. Now, Hadley is twenty-six, and she still feels like something is missing. She could still sense the twinge of loneliness in her head, even though she was the creator of an entire cyber planet. She desired something new and exciting that was random; an unknown variable to bring a new perspective to Swisaril. With plenty of research, she found a twenty-four-year-old potential filled but talent squandered man by the name of Milo Hodge. Hadley saw Milos capacity to do great things, but knew he would never reach that capability under his current circumstances. So, she used her resources to track Milo down and bring him into her digital world. It didnt take long for Milo to hop into the Pseudoplex once Hadley introduced him to his very own DimensionCast. Milo was assigned an avatar, which he named Creo, and just like Hadley, took that as his identity as long as he was in the Pseudoplex. Animi makes it clear that she wants Creo to become a creator just like her, and use his potential to build off her already great creation. As Creo grows alongside Animi, he will learn about her past as the answers slowly trickle into view. With this planet full of values, civilizations, and surprises, there are many lessons that both Animi and Creo must learn together. The Pseudoplex is where minds and machines merge, where evolution is digital, and where imagination becomes reality. Step inside and synchronize.
