Download or read book The Clown Motel written by PA Cadaver and published by BookCountry. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Don't touch the clowns, and don't let the clowns touch you. Just off of highway 95 in the state of Nevada, there lies the small town of Tonopah. For miles around, it's desolate and in the silence, there lies one lonely motel. Across from the motel is an old cemetery where miners were buried. It's not the ghosts within the cemetery that will make you run in fear...for those of you faint of heart and fearful of clowns, this is not a delicate story. America's scariest motel is haunted...by hundreds of clowns. Spending the night in this creepy Motel is definitely a true test of courage, because it's full of clowns. There are clowns tacked onto the doors, shelves of clown dolls starring at you with their beady glass eyes, and collectibles in the lobby that are neatly seated in chairs as if guarding the place from harmful intruders. There are clown paintings on the walls that look at you. And if you have a second floor room, you can look out from the balcony and see why the motel is so eerily quiet and dark at night. It's the cemetery. The Clown Motel stands right next to Tonopah's old, dusty, unlit cemetery. Closed for over one hundred years, it's packed with the graves of the town's miners who died very unpleasantly. That should be cause for panic and even more so, if you've ever watched the movie Poltergeist, and you decide to spend a night at this unique lodge. Spend at least a minute or two wondering if, just maybe, part of a cemetery full of graves of men who died horrible deaths once stretched underneath land now occupied by the Clown Motel... I tell this story with locked doors and windows. I was one of the lucky ones. They are coming. They are coming for me. As the saying goes, you can check out any time you want, but you can't leave. There's a lot more buried there than you might think...

Download or read book No Joke written by M. Keith Booker and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2023-05-18 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No Joke is a detailed examination of Todd Phillips’s Joker, one of the biggest global box-office hits of 2019. While his success was no doubt partly because of the association of its title character with the Batman superhero franchise, Joker is anything but a flashy superhero romp. It does explore the pathologies of its central character and suggest ways in which his life experiences might have driven him to become a supervillain, the arch-enemy of Batman. At the same time, the film leaves open the possibility that its “Joker” is not, in fact, the same as the one conventionally associated with Batman. In fact, the film leaves open many interpretive possibilities, in keeping with the complex work of postmodern art that it turns out to be. Joker also engages in extensive dialogues with a range of works from modern American culture, especially the films of the 1970s and 1980s, the period in which the action of Joker is set. Moreover, Joker is a highly political film that comments in important ways on American political history from roughly the beginning of the presidency of Richard Nixon through the end of the Trump presidency, with a special focus on the Reagan years. It also comments in more general and fundamental ways on the very nature of American society and American capitalism. All this, and more, is covered in M. Keith Booker’s analysis of one of the most talked-about films of recent years.

Download or read book Bicycling Beyond the Divide written by Daryl Farmer and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a journey begun twenty years earlier, Daryl Farmer, a twenty-year-old two-time college dropout, did what lost men have so often done in this country: he headed west. Twenty years later and seventy pounds heavier, with the yellowing journals from that transformative five-thousand-mile bicycle trek in his pack, Farmer set out to retrace his path. This is his story of pursuing that distant summer and that distant dream of home, where home is endless space, a roof of big sky, and a bed of dry earth. Just as the years altered the man, so, too, have they altered the West, and Farmer s second journey affords a unique perspective on these changes as well as on what lasts. Whether caught in a Colorado snowstorm or braving a Yellowstone herd of bison, kayaking with orcas in Puget Sound, trading Ninja moves with a homeless man in San Francisco, or getting the lowdown on aliens on Nevada s Extraterrestrial Highway, Farmer charts a moving landscape of people and places. This is the West where the natural world and personal character are inextricably linked, and where one man s ride into the past and present takes us to the heart of that ever-evolving connection.

Download or read book The Many Lives of Scary Clowns written by Ron Riekki and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-05-16 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The frightening yet comic clown is one of the best and most enduring characters in literature, theater, television, and film. Across the centuries, from Shakespeare's Porter in Macbeth to Edgar Allan Poe's "Hop-Frog," or Stephen King's Pennywise, horror and comedy have blended to create the perfect recipe for entertainment. This volume gives an in-depth analysis of the clown horror genre, including essays by revered horror scholars such as Kevin Wetmore, Dale Bailey, Kim Hester Williams, Jennifer K. Cox, and Joanna Parypinski. Their essays cover topics such as nostalgia, race, class, and new portrayals of the scary clown as zombies or phantoms. It also offers interviews with actors and directors working in the clown horror genre: Eoghan McQuinn (Stitches), Kevin Kangas (Fear of Clowns), and Jaysen Buterin (Kill Giggles). Some of fiction's most terrifying creations--like the Killer Klowns, Captain Spaulding, Art the Clown, Krusty, Frowny, the Joker, and Twisty--jig through these pages of analysis and deconstruction, asking what these many iterations of scary clowns have to say about our society and its fears.
Download or read book Howard Hughes written by Geoff Schumacher and published by University of Nevada Press. This book was released on 2020-03-11 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This newly revised and expanded edition of Howard Hughes chronicles the life and legacies of one of the most intriguing and accomplished Americans of the twentieth century. Hughes, born into wealth thanks to his father’s innovative drill bit that transformed the oil industry, put his inheritance to work in multiple ways, from producing big-budget Hollywood movies to building the world’s fastest and largest airplanes. Hughes set air speed records and traveled around the world in record time, earning ticker-tape parades in three cities in 1938. Later, he moved to Las Vegas and invested heavily in casinos. He bought seven resorts, in each case helping to loosen organized crime’s grip on Nevada’s lifeblood industry. Although the public viewed Hughes as a heroic and independent-minded trailblazer, behind closed doors he suffered from germophobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and an addiction to painkillers. He became paranoid and reclusive, surrounding himself with a small cadre of loyal caretakers. As executives battled each other over his empire, Hughes’ physical and mental health deteriorated to the point where he lost control of his business affairs. This second edition includes more insider details on Hughes’ personal interactions with actresses, journalists, and employees. New chapters provide insights into Hughes’s involvement with the mob, his ownership and struggles as the majority shareholder of TWA and the wide-ranging activities of Hughes Aircraft Company, Hughes’s critical role in the Glomar Explorer CIA project (a deep-sea drillship platform built to recover the Soviet submarine K-129), and more. Based on in-depth interviews with individuals who knew and worked with Hughes, this fascinating biography provides a colorful and comprehensive look at Hughes—from his life and career to his final years and lasting influence. This penetrating depiction of the man behind the curtain demonstrates Hughes’s legacy, and enduring impact on popular culture.
