Book Histories of England France Germany and Holland

Download or read book Histories of England France Germany and Holland written by Charles Scribner'S Sons and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-25 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Histories of England, France, Germany, and Holland: From the Encyclopaedia Britannica But when Baeda, and after him the Chronicler, gives a short ethnological account of the invaders, they describe the Teutonic conquerors of Kent neither as Saxons nor as Angles, but as J utes. As the J utes then, in the very cord of their conquest, are spoken of, on the one hand Saxons, on the other hand as English, it seems to follow that, from the very beginning, the Celtic inhabitants of Britain called all Teutonic invaders Saxons, while the in vaders themselves from the very beginning used Angle or English as their common name. The general use of the Saxon name by the Celts is only what we should have looked for; the wide use of the English name among the Teutons themselves is a fact to be noticed. It is at least certain that, while the English name is often applied to Saxons and, jutes, it would be hard to find any case where an Angle calls himself, or is called in his own tongue, a Saxon. We need not infer that the English name had become the common name of all the three tribes before they left Germany it certainly became so within no long time after they settled in Britain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brief but Complete History of England, France and Germany: Giving the Contemporaneous Sovereigns, Literary Characters and Social Progress of Each Century, From the Roman Conquest to the Present Day I lay claim to but little originality in this work, though the plan and a good portion of the rendering of historic facts are my own. It was written only for my own pupils, with no thought of publication, and used for their benefit in the manuscript form. Book Germany and England Classic Reprint

Download or read book Germany and England Classic Reprint written by J. A. Cramb and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Germany and England More and more clearly as the days pass, the European war stands out as a supreme conflict between England and Germany. The nations may quarrel about the apportionment of the blame for the opening of the struggle; but Belgium's neutrality, Russia's mobilization, Servia's self-respect - these were merely sparks that led to the explosion. The powder to which these sparks set fire had been heaped up long since and added to every year. To America, English in speech and origin, and of late increasingly German in intellectual outlook, an understanding of the true causes of this colossal clash, an accurate comprehension of what Germany is fighting for, and what England is resisting, is of peculiar interest. In this little book, Professor Cramb, one of the few Englishmen profoundly saturated with German literature, German history, and German thought, shows how far back in history the motive of this conflict lies and why England and Germany, kindred people, both dowered with the spirit of empire, proud of the glorious past, are standing face to face, each in the other's way - and one of them bound to be humbled. Book England Germany Classic Reprint

Download or read book England Germany Classic Reprint written by Austin Harrison and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from England Germany These letters, which appeared originally in The Observer, are reproduced, with the kind permission of Lord Northclifie, at the request of a number of people known and unknown to me, who thought them worthy of preserva tion. A few corrections and expurgations have been made, and they have been slightly added to. Otherwise they stand as I wrote them, partly while travelling abroad. If they suffer from tautology, I would submit the opinion of De Quincey, that in a newspaper tautology is a virtue; as for the iterative method, that, in dealing with a problem of this nature, was part of my deliberate intention. Since they were written a calm has fallen upon Europe; the relations between England, Germany, and France have sensibly improved. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a Visit to England, France and Germany, Made in 1862, and to Germany in 1885 Proud was the head, now at rest 'neath thy waves; lovely the form in thy fathomless caves, Oh, whis pering sea, oh, merciless sea. A few days after, twin babies were born in the steerage, and the ladies in the cabin called on the mother every day, bring ing some little delicacy. The babies were very pretty, and we named them Ocean and Oceana, because they were children of the sea, rocked by the wild waves on the bosom of the stormy Atlantic. When the steamer arrived at Queenstown, they, with their pa rents, went ashore, and the children of the sea were lost to us forever.
