Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reproducing piano had an incredibly refined capacity to reproduce the playing of the great pianists who recorded on it. Sitsky has made a thorough compilation of this rare material producing for the first time, in as complete a form as possible, the entire repertoire of classical music available on the reproducing piano roll. The introduction contains a real "treasure-trove" of background information on this rare musical art form and details the technical aspects of the reproducing piano and of piano roll production as well as types of pianos and their restoration. Fact filled discussions of the various companies, their catalogs and their problems, and of the types of music recorded are also included here. The bibliography lists catalogs and the extent of the reference sources indicates the mountain of primary material consulted in an effort to make these volumes.

Download or read book Lost Genius written by Kevin Bazzana and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2009-02-24 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The award-winning author of Wondrous Strange, the critically acclaimed biography of Glenn Gould, explores the bizarre, untold life of another brilliant and eccentric musician. The composer Arnold Schoenberg called him an “utterly extraordinary” pianist of “incredible originality and conviction,” yet today he is all but forgotten. Born in Budapest in 1903, Ervin Nyiregyházi (nyeer-edge-hah-zee) was a remarkable prodigy: at eight he performed at Buckingham Palace, and when he was thirteen a psychologist published a book about him. In his teens, his idiosyncratic, intensely Romantic playing electrified audiences and astounded critics in Europe and America. But his adult career quickly foundered, and he was reduced to penury. In 1928, he settled in Los Angeles, and eventually he withdrew from public life, preferring to spend his time quietly composing. Psychologically, he remained a child, and found the ordinary demands of daily life onerous — he struggled even to dress himself. He drank heavily, was insatiable sexually (he married ten times), and described himself as “a fortissimo bastard,” yet such was his talent and charisma that he numbered among his friends and champions celebrities such as Jack Dempsey, Theodore Dreiser, Bela Lugosi, and Gloria Swanson. Rediscovered in the 1970s, he enjoyed a brief, sensational, and controversial renaissance before slipping back into obscurity. He died in 1987. Lost Genius, the product of ten years’ research, is the first biography of Nyiregyházi, whose story is among the most fascinating — and bizarre — in twentieth-century music.
Download or read book The Art of French Piano Music written by Roy Howat and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2009-08-11 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential resource for scholars and performers, this study by a world-renowned specialist illuminates the piano music of four major French composers, in comparative and reciprocal context. Howat explores the musical language and artistic ethos of this repertoire, juxtaposing structural analysis with editorial and performing issues. He also relates his four composers historically and stylistically to such predecessors as Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, the French harpsichord school, and Russian and Spanish music. Challenging long-held assumptions about performance practice, Howat elucidates the rhythmic vitality and invention inherent in French music. In granting Fauré and Chabrier equal consideration with Debussy and Ravel, he redresses a historic imbalance and reshapes our perceptions of this entire musical tradition. Outstanding historical documentation and analysis are supported by Howat’s direct references to performing traditions shaped by the composers themselves. The book balances accessibility with scholarly and analytic rigor, combining a lifetime’s scholarship with practical experience of teaching and the concert platform

Download or read book Reproducing Pianos Past and Present written by Kent A. Holliday and published by Edwin Mellen Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reproducing piano rendered faithful re-performances of classical and popular piano solos at a time when cylinder and disc recorders were in their infancy. It played notes from a perforated paper roll, but unlike the player piano it was able to replicate expressive performance elements such as articulation, dynamics, and pedaling. Busoni, Granados, Hoffmann, Rachmaninov, and Ravel made thousands of piano rolls for the reproducing piano.
Download or read book The Performing Style of Alexander Scriabin written by Professor Anatole Leikin and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-01-28 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Alexander Nikolayevich Scriabin's music was performed during his lifetime, it always elicited ecstatic responses from the listeners. Wilhelm Gericke, conductor of the Vienna opera, rushed backstage after one of Scriabin's concerts and fell on his knees crying, 'It's genius, it's genius...'. After the composer’s death in 1915, however, his music steadily lost the captivating appeal it once held. The main reason for this drastic change in the listeners’ attitude is an enormous gap existing between the printed scores of Scriabin’s music and the way the composer himself played his works. Apparently, what Scriabin's audiences heard at the time was significantly different from, and vastly superior to, modern performances that are based primarily on published scores. Scriabin recorded nineteen of his compositions on the Hupfeld and Welte-Mignon reproducing pianos in 1908 and 1910, respectively. Full score transcriptions of the piano rolls, which are included in the book, provide many substantial features of Scriabin's performance: exact pitches and their timing against each other, rhythms, tempo fluctuations, articulation, dynamics and essential pedal application. Using these transcriptions and other historical documents as the groundwork for his research, Anatole Leikin explores Scriabin's performing style within the broader context of Romantic performance practice.
Download or read book The Compleat Busoni Volume 1 written by Larry Sitsky and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2023-08-24 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Larry Sitsky, professor emeritus at The Australian National University, is an internationally known composer, pianist, scholar, and teacher. His books are fundamental reference works on subjects such as Australian piano music, the 20th-century avant-garde, the piano music of Anton Rubinstein, the early 20th-century Russian avant-garde, and the classical reproducing piano roll. The Compleat Busoni is the result of Sitsky’s lifelong focus on the composer Ferruccio Busoni. Over three volumes, Sitsky surveys Busoni’s vast output, provides an ending to the unfinished opera Dr. Faust, and presents definitive realisations of the Fantasia Contrappuntistica in two-piano and orchestral versions. New insights into Busoni’s style and aesthetics are an integral aspect of this work.

Download or read book The Piano written by Robert Palmieri and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-06-01 with total page 964 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Encyclopedia of the Piano was selected in its first edition as a Choice Outstanding Book and remains a fascinating and unparalleled reference work. The instrument has been at the center of music history with even composers of large symphonic work asserting that they do not write anything without sketching it out first on a piano; its limitations and expressive capacity have done much to shape the contours of the western musical idiom. Within the scope of this user-friendly guide is everything from the acoustics and construction of the piano to the history of the companies that have built them. The piano-lover might also be surprised to find an entry for Thomas Jefferson, and will no doubt read intently the passages about the changing history of the piano's place in the home. Uniformly well-written and authoritative, this guide will channel anyone's love for the instrument, through social, intellectual, art history and beyond into the electronic age.

Download or read book Music by the Hearth written by Foster White and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2015-04-30 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost from the beginning of their existence, family units would gather by the warmth of the hearth and enjoy some form of music. Throughout human history, music in many forms played a significant role in social development. In this study, author Foster White presents his assessment of this important aspect of music history through the lens of his own familys story of musical development and ingenuity. Exploring music as it related to family life and home entertainment in the time prior to radio, television, and the Internet, White shares a saga beginning in Caernarfon Wales in the mid-1500s and ending rather tragically by the Atlantic Ocean on the Massachusetts coast in September 1938. Along the way, he recounts the intriguing history of the development of the player piano and the Artrio Angelus Reproducing Piano. The story of the Strong/White family and the Wilcox and White Organ Company is one of creativity, dedication, musical skills and the ability to adapt to change and survive the difficult situations presented in life. Full of intriguing historical detail, Music by the Hearth offers a consideration of one familys contribution to music over the course of more than three centuries.
