Book The Class of 1895 Princeton University Vol 4

Download or read book The Class of 1895 Princeton University Vol 4 written by Andrew Clerk Imbrie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Class of 1895, Princeton University, Vol. 4: Decennial Record, 1895-1905 Committee determined under what scheme of allotment the various entries shall be assigned to the ten classes. These de tails are secondary to the great facts that a plan for financing the dormitory has been agreed upon, and that the building will be under way when we go back to Princeton for our De cennial. So now that you have read my enclosure, and have admired (i hope) the preliminary sketches the architect has prepared, I come to the real business of this circular and ask: What are you going to do about it? For you must know that as a member of the Dormitory Committee - moreover, as Secretary of it - I have solemnly pledged the Class of '95 to raise the sum of when we have actually in the bank only In times past I touched you - but never, I think, for such an amount as this. One of the joys of Next Year will be to know that I may write new and then without asking you for money; and I fancy the rejoicing will be mutual. But now that I've made the plunge I can only chatter: C-c-come in b-b-boys! The water's f-f-fine! You can never help me out from the shore; but if you really love me you'll jump right in up to your neck so that I may have good company when I walk up to the bank! Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Class of 1895, Princeton University, Vol. 6: 25th Year Record, 1895 1920 Our Decennial Record, printed in 1905, was an attempt to at tain this impossible ideal. Many of the letters were completely satisfying but many, also, having been obtained by the Class Sec retary by duress, were composed of one part apology for - delay, one part deprecation -oi -persona1 - achievement, and one part hur rah-for - old - Nassau. Book The Decennial Record of the Class of 1889 Vol 4

Download or read book The Decennial Record of the Class of 1889 Vol 4 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Decennial Record of the Class of 1889, Vol. 4: Princeton University; 1889-1899 Classmates - Your Secretary sends forth this collection of Eighty nine Tales trusting that you will each gain as much pleasure and profit from its perusal as has he from its compilation. At first glance these letters may seem to furnish little more than glimpses of the footsteps and fortunes of more or less familiar friends. Closer scrutiny, however, will convince the most uninterested that there is much more contained between the leaded lines than is condensed on the printed page. That the unwrit ten as well as the written may be sought and found by every reader is the earnest wish of the editor. With this end in view, he has endeavored not only to preserve intact the phraseology of each letter as it has come to him, but also to present entire the personality of each writer as it has been seen by him. If, therefore, there is anything in this volume which is worthy of praise, it is due to the members of the Class who have enlightened us as to the substance as well as to the sequence of their lives. If it contains anything which is deserving of blame, it should be laid at the door of the redactor, who has obscured where he hoped to make plain or has misled where he hoped to guide. Book Base Ball Founders

Download or read book Base Ball Founders written by Peter Morris and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-07-15 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book completes the series of histories of the clubs and players responsible for making baseball the national pastime that began with Base Ball Pioneers, 1850-1870 (McFarland 2011). Forty clubs and hundreds of pioneer players from the first hotbeds of New York City, Philadelphia, New Jersey, and Massachusetts are profiled by leading experts on baseball's early years. The subjects include legendary clubs such as the Knickerbockers of New York, the Eckfords and Atlantics of Brooklyn, the Athletics of Philadelphia, and Harvard's first baseball clubs, and fabled players like Jim Creighton, Dickey Pearce, and Daniel Adams, but space is also given to less well remembered clubs such as the Champion Club of Jersey City and the Cummaquids of Barnstable, Massachusetts. What united all of these founders of the game was that their love of baseball during its earliest years helped to make it the national pastime.

Book Orientalism Philology and the Illegibility of the Modern World

Download or read book Orientalism Philology and the Illegibility of the Modern World written by Henning Trüper and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-02-20 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orientalism, Philology, and the Illegibility of the Modern World examines the philology of orientalism. It discusses how European (and in particular German) orientalism has influenced the modern understanding of how language accesses reality and offers a critical reinterpretation of orientalism, ontology and modernity. This book pushes an innovative focus on the global history of knowledge as entangled between European and non-European cultures. Drawing from formal oriental studies, epigraphy, travel literature, and theology, Henning Trüper explores how the attempt to appropriate the world by attaching language to the notion of a 'real' reference in the world ultimately produced a crisis of meaning. In the process, Trüper convincingly challenges received understandings of the intellectual genealogies of oriental scholarship and its practices. This ground-breaking study is a meaningful contribution to current discourses about philology and significantly adds to our understanding about the relationship between discursive practices, cultural agendas, and political systems. As such, it will be of immense value to scholars researching Europe and the modern world, the history of philology, and those seeking to historicise the prevalent debates in theory.

Book For the Common Good

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Golden Age of Fraternity was a unique time in American history. In the forty years between the Civil War and the onset of World War I, more than half of all Americans participated in clubs, fraternities, militias, and mutual benefit societies. Today this period is held up as a model for how we might revitalize contemporary civil society. But was America's associational culture really as communal as has been assumed? What if these much-admired voluntary organizations served parochial concerns rather than the common good? Jason Kaufman sets out to dispel many of the myths about the supposed civic-mindedness of "joining" while bringing to light the hidden lessons of associationalism's history. Relying on deep archival research in city directories, club histories, and membership lists, Kaufman shows that organizational activity in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries revolved largely around economic self-interest rather than civic engagement. And far from spurring concern for the collective good, fraternal societies, able to pick and choose members at will, fostered exclusion and further exacerbated the competitive interests of a society divided by race, class, ethnicity, and religion. Tracing both the rise and the decline of American associational life - a decline that began immediately after World War I, much earlier than previously thought - Kaufman argues persuasively that the end of fraternalism was a good thing. Illuminating both broad historical shifts - immigration, urbanization, and the disruptions of war, among them - and smaller, overlooked contours, such as changes in the burial and life insurance industries, Kaufman has written a bracing revisionist history. Eloquently rebutting those hailing America's associational past and calling for a return to old-style voluntarism, For the Common Good? will change the terms of debate about the history - and the future - of American civil society."--Publisher's description.
