Book excerpt: A heart-pounding new series set in the Black Dagger Brotherhood world, about a scientist fighting to save the gray wolves—and getting caught in a deadly trap herself... Lydia Susi is passionate about protecting wolves in their natural habitat. When a hotel chain develops a tract of land next to the preserve, Lydia is one of the most vocal opponents of the project—and becomes a target. One night, a shadowy figure threatens Lydia’s life in the forest, and a new hire at the Wolf Study Project comes from out of nowhere to save her. Daniel Joseph is both mysterious, and someone she intrinsically wants to trust. But is he hiding something? As the stakes get higher, and one of Lydia’s colleagues is murdered, she must decide how far she will go to protect the wolves. Then a shocking revelation about Daniel challenges Lydia’s reality in ways she could never have predicted. Some fates demand courage, while others require even more, with no guarantees. Is she destined to have true love...or will a soul-shattering loss ruin her forever?

Book excerpt: Adeline didn't expect to find Hunter when she was patrolling the woods on Willow Pack's borders. Then again, nor did she expect that another would come that has just as much claim to her as the other. Can one person divide their love for two fated mates, or will she be forced to choose who will claim her as their own? Adeline's face flushed a deep crimson. Dual penetration? Holy shit. There was a long silence before anyone said anything. "D-does it matter who...who penetrates her where?" Hunter's once pink cheeks had splotches of deep red on them, and Cameron was looking like he would faint talking about this with the older woman. "I do not think so, young Alpha," Riki told him with a smile. "Though incidentally, I would suggest plenty of foreplay and a water-based lubricant." Mother of all that was holy...

Book excerpt: Growing up poor on the rough side of Indiana didn’t make my life easy. It made it hard. My mom worked two jobs and didn’t have time to read me many fairy tales. We couldn’t afford the princess costumes or the trips to expensive magic kingdoms. My life was black and white, and a hint of grey was the most I had to look forward to…until I met Zachary Rostov—tall, beautiful, with a perfect smile. Unfortunately, as with most stories, ours had to come to an end. When I turned nineteen, after escaping the soul-sucking pit of Indiana, one bad decision almost destroyed everything. The way my story had been written up to that point meant my dreams of more should have come to an end. But it was the same day I met Vincent Jamison, and if my life were a fairy tale, he would have been the prince who had come to save me. I don’t remember in any of those stories being saved coming with a debt.

Download or read book The Dance Claimed Me written by Peggy Schwartz and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2011-05-31 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pearl Primus (1919-1994) blazed onto the dance scene in 1943 with stunning works that incorporated social and racial protest into their dance aesthetic. In "The Dance Claimed Me," Peggy and Murray Schwartz, friends and colleagues of Primus, offer an intimate perspective on her life and explore her influences on American culture, dance, and education. They trace Primus's path from her childhood in Port of Spain, Trinidad, through her rise as an influential international dancer, an early member of the New Dance Group (whose motto was "Dance is a weapon"), and a pioneer in dance anthropology. Primus traveled extensively in the United States, Europe, Israel, the Caribbean, and Africa, and she played an important role in presenting authentic African dance to American audiences. She engendered controversy in both her private and professional lives, marrying a white Jewish man during a time of segregation and challenging black intellectuals who opposed the "primitive" in her choreography. Her political protests and mixed-race tours in the South triggered an FBI investigation, even as she was celebrated by dance critics and by contemporaries like Langston Hughes. For "The Dance Claimed Me," the Schwartzes interviewed more than a hundred of Primus's family members, friends, and fellow artists, as well as other individuals to create a vivid portrayal of a life filled with passion, drama, determination, fearlessness, and brilliance.
Download or read book When Tenants Claimed the City written by Roberta Gold and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2014-02-15 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In postwar America, not everyone wanted to move out of the city and into the suburbs. For decades before World War II, New York's tenants had organized to secure renters' rights. After the war, tenant activists raised the stakes by challenging the newly-dominant ideal of homeownership in racially segregated suburbs. They insisted that renters as well as owners had rights to stable, well-maintained homes, and they proposed that racially diverse urban communities held a right to remain in place--a right that outweighed owners' rights to raise rents, redevelop properties, or exclude tenants of color. Further, the activists asserted that women could participate fully in the political arenas where these matters were decided. Grounded in archival research and oral history, When Tenants Claimed the City: The Struggle for Citizenship in New York City Housing shows that New York City's tenant movement made a significant claim to citizenship rights that came to accrue, both ideologically and legally, to homeownership in postwar America. Roberta Gold emphasizes the centrality of housing to the racial and class reorganization of the city after the war; the prominent role of women within the tenant movement; and their fostering of a concept of "community rights" grounded in their experience of living together in heterogeneous urban neighborhoods.

Download or read book The Claim to Christianity written by Hannah Strømmen and published by SCM Press. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The far right is on the rise across Europe, pushing a battle scenario in which Islam clashes with Christianity as much as Christianity clashes with Islam. From the margins to the mainstream, far-right protesters and far-right politicians call for the defence of Europe’s Christian culture. The far right claims Christianity. This book investigates contemporary far-right claims to Christianity. Ulrich Schmiedel and Hannah Strømmen examine the theologies that emerge in the far right across Europe, concentrating on Norway, Germany and Great Britain. They explore how churches in these three countries have been complicit, complacent or critical of the far right, sometimes intentionally and sometimes unintentionally. Ultimately, Schmiedel and Strømmen encourage a creative and collaborative theological response. To counter the far right, Christianity needs to be practiced in an open and open-ended way which calls Christians into contact with Muslims.

Download or read book The Defiant Middle written by Kaya Oakes and published by Broadleaf Books . This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For every woman, from the young to those in midlife and beyond, who has ever been told, "You can't" and thought, "Oh, I definitely will!"--this book is for you. Women are expected to be many things. They should be young enough, but not too young; old enough, but not too old; creative, but not crazy; passionate, but not angry. They should be fertile and feminine and self-reliant, not barren or butch or solitary. Women, in other words, are caught between social expectations and a much more complicated reality. Women who don't fit in, whether during life transitions or because of changes in their body, mind, or gender identity, are carving out new ways of being in and remaking the world. But this is nothing new: they have been doing so for thousands of years, often at the margins of the same religious traditions and cultures that created these limited ways of being for women in the first place. In The Defiant Middle, Kaya Oakes draws on the wisdom of women mystics and explores how transitional eras or living in marginalized female identities can be both spiritually challenging and wonderfully freeing, ultimately resulting in a reinvented way of seeing the world and changing it. "Change, after all," Oakes writes, "always comes from the margins."
