Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spottiswoode Miscellany, Vol. 1: A Collection of Original Papers and Tracts, Illustrative Chiefly of the Civil and Ecclesiastical History of Scotland As each Article in the present Volume has prefixed to it such remarks as occurred to the Editor, it may be only necessary here to state generally, that it has been his endeavour to make the Volume as interesting as possible. With that view, he has been at great pains to select from the mass of papers to which access had been obtained, such portions as he hoped would be acceptable to the Members of the Society. It may be observed, that the previous portion was originally in tended to have been formed into a separate volume, to be entitled the spottiswoode papers. Upon te flection, itwas determined that these documents should be included in the miscellany, as they were not sufficiently bulky to make a separate publication. Book The Early Scottish Church

Download or read book The Early Scottish Church written by Thomas MacLauchlan and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Scottish Church: The Ecclesiastical History of Scotland From the First to the Twelfth Century This volume is the result of an effort to fill up a blank in the Ecclesiastical History of Scotland. Monograms exist on periods and persons introduced throughout it; and also brief sketches of the period, in works on Scottish Church History, preparatory to the history of more recent and more prominent events, but no work exists whose sole object is to present the reader with a consecutive and connected view of the period embraced. This was to be regretted, considering the importance of the events recorded, and their influence upon the future state of the Church in Scotland. Inferences, not borne out by historical facts, were drawn from assumptions regarding the early Church, by parties of various, and even of contending views, and antiquity was cited in support of conclusions which in reality derived no aid from its testimony. The author has endeavoured to collect his facts from the most trustworthy sources, linking them in a continuous narrative. Although these sources are few, yet, when the straggling rays are gathered together, it is wonderful how much light they afford. Impartiality has been earnestly studied throughout, the writer having but one object in view, the discovery of truth in questions of national interest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Ecclesiastical History of Scotland, Vol. 3 of 4: From the Introduction of Christianity to the Present Time Many persons in all parts of the country were averse to the Covenant, but few had the courage to Oppose it openly. The committee which sat at Edinburgh decided everything accord ing to their own discretion, and the royal authority was unable to protect those who remained faithful to the crown. The jurisdiction of the bishops was practically at an end the Perth articles could not safely be observed even by those who were willing to conform to them and the party, which a few weeks before had made it a chief accusation against the prelates that they sought to enforce measures destitute of the proper civil and ecclesiastical authority, now openly forbade obedience to the laws which had received the sanction of the Church and State. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ten Years' Conflict, Vol. 1 of 2: Being the History of the Disruption of the Church of Scotland The object of this work is to explain the causes and to trace the history of the Disruption of the Established Church of Scotland. The principles involved in that ecclesiastical convulsion, have an immediate bearing both on the constitution and prerogatives of the Church of Christ, and on the great question of its relation to the civil power. The subject is therefore one of catholic importance, and it derives additional and peculiar interest from the character of the present times. In one form or another the points at issue in the Ten Years' Conflict are at this moment, in almost every nation of Europe, the ques tions of the day. Download or read book An Ecclesiastical History of Scotland Vol 1 of 4 written by George Grub and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Ecclesiastical History of Scotland, Vol. 1 of 4: From the Introduction of Christianity to the Present Time It is more than nine years since I began the work which is now published, and which has occupied most of my leisure hours in the interval. The result may be quite inadequate to the time and labour bestowed, but those who are best acquainted with the task which I proposed to myself will be the most ready to make allowance for defects in its execution. I have spared no pains in endeavouring to reach the best sources of information, and have made diligent use of all that were accessible to me. I have thus been able to correct many mistakes and to supply not a few deficiencies in the narratives of former writers. I cannot hope that my own work will be found to be without its faults; but I trust that, when they are pointed out, I shall be ready to acknowledge them, and - if opportunity be afforded me - to amend them. It is only within the last few years that the original authorities for a large portion of the early ecclesiastical history of Scotland have been made generally available even to scholars. Book The History of the Church and State of Scotland

Download or read book The History of the Church and State of Scotland written by Andrew Stevenson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-05 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Church and State of Scotland: From the Accession of King Charles I. To the Year 1649; To Which Is Prefixed, an Abstract of the State of Religion in Scotland, From the Earliest Ages of Christianity, to the Year 1625 And, to satisfy my readers that I have studied their gratification more than my own ease, I reckon myself bound to in form them, that my general method is to make contents of every thing that seems memorable in all my authors, written and printed, each year by itself, and having thus laid before me the accounts given by every one, I pick out all that seems entertaining and of good authority in either, and so it comes to pass, that before the year 1637, I some times refer to different authors, accord ing as they furnish new matter, but after that time, Mr. Baillie's collections being more full, and of greater authority than any I have seen, I omit nothing in the historical part of his letters that seems of public and perpetual use from others I excerpt only so much as seems needful to supply or illustrate what is overlooked or but generally touched by Mr. Baillie; and, as he hath taken the trouble to collect most of the public papers respect ing church and state in that period, I judge it incumbent upon me, as well for the preservation of so valuable monu ments, as for supporting the credit of his relation, to give the copies of such of them at least as are not already in print; and where these natively make part of the narrative, I engross them as they occur, if otherwise I refer them to the appendix. The following History bears the title both of Church and State, because, though I dip little farther in civil affairs than as they are connected with ecclesiastic, yet these are so interwoven, that I behoved to be somewhat particular in the one as well as the other, and might have hurt both by separating them.
