Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the City of San Francisco: And Incidentally of the State of California This book was written at the request of the committee appointed to manage the celebration in San Francisco of the Centennial Anniversary of the Declaration of our National Independence, in accordance with a resolution adopted by Congress on the thirteenth of March, 1876, recommending that in every town the delivery of a historical sketch of the place from its foundation should be part of the local celebration. It was considered better that, instead of a brief sketch to be read publicly in an hour, the metropolis on the American coast of the North Pacific should have a book of several hundred pages. The city furnishes material enough for a history which could never be prepared on a more appropriate occasion than in commemoration of the National Centennial year, especially since it happens to coincide with the completion of the first century in the existence of our city. Such a double epoch demanded some special mark of recognition. There are urgent reasons why works of this kind should be written by pioneers, and while there are still hundreds of pioneers living to furnish information from their personal reminiscences and from papers that will be lost when they die. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The City That Was: A Requiem of Old San Francisco The climate of California is peculiar; it is hard to give an impression of it. In the region about San Francisco, all the forces of nature work on their own laws. There is no thunder and lightning; there is no snow, except a flurry once in five or six years; there are perhaps half a dozen nights in the winter when the thermometer drops low enough so that in the morning there is a little film of ice on exposed water Neither is there any hot weather. Yet most Easterners remaining in San Francisco for a few days remember that they were always chilly. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book By the Golden Gate Or San Francisco

Download or read book By the Golden Gate Or San Francisco written by Joseph Carey and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from By the Golden Gate or San Francisco: The Queen City of the Pacific Coast, With Scenes and Incidents Characteristic of Its Life This work now offered to the public owes its origin largely to the following circumstance: On the return of the author from California and the city of Mexico, in November, 1901, his friend, the Rev. John N. Marvin, President of the Diocesan Press, asked him to contribute some articles to the Diocese of Albany. From these "sketches" of San Francisco this book has taken form. There are chapters in the volume which have not appeared in print hitherto, and such portions as have been already published have been thoroughly revised. Much of the work has been written from copious notes made in San Francisco, and impressions received there naturally give a local colouring to it in its composition. It is plain that there has come into modern mechanics a new method, its scope as remarkable as its speed of operation, which surpasses such feats as even a dreamer could lay to the credit of the blacksmith of the gods on Olympus. Vulcan has the solace of much good company, for the San Francisco achievement crowds back into his class the engineers of Babel, the pyramid builders, and a long line of wonder-workers in construction, each great enough in his own day.
