Book excerpt: Excerpt from The City of Detroit, Michigan, 1701-1922, Vol. 5 Detroit's most prominent citizens, whose activities and connections have been closely associated with the city's wonderful industrial growth, is a native of London, England, and was born January 29, 1873, a son of James Lay and Julia (dunn) Waldon. The father, a civil engineer, was for twenty-three years in the employ of Pickford Company of London. After coming to the United States in 1893, the father lived for a number of years at Mount Vernon, Ohio, where he and his wife are both buried. Sidney D. Walton acquired his education in the schools of London and South Kensington, England, after which he learned the trade of a locksmith in the factory of Hobbs, Hart Company, in London. In February, 1893, Mr. Waldon came to America with his parents, who located at Mount Vernon, Ohio, and in that city he became connected with the Cooper Engine Works, being thus employed until 1896. He then went to Erie, Pennsylvania, where he secured a position with the Ball Engine Company, so continuing until July 3, 1900. He joined the Foster Automobile Company of Rochester, New York July 5, 1900, remaining there until April 18, 1902, when he accepted a clerical position with the New York Ohio Automobile Com pany, organized a short time previously at Warren, Ohio. Mr. Joy's second wife was Miss Mary Bourne of Hartford, Connecticut, and the children of this union were: Frederic, who died in 1893; Henry Bourne, who is mentioned on another page of this work; and Rich ard Pickering Joy, who is president of the National Bank of Commerce of Detroit, and is mentioned else where in this work. At the time of the birth of the subject, General Cass was United States' minister to France, while Henry Ledyard, father of the subject, was secretary of legation in Paris. Henry Ledyard was an alderman in Detroit during 1849-50; was a member for six' years of the first board of water com missioners, and was mayor of Detroit in 1855. Excerpt: ... middle branch of the River Rouge and the Pere Marquette Railroad. During the Civil war, Waterford supplied more volunteers than any village of its size in Wayne County. Willow, a small station on the Pere Marquette Railroad in the southwestern part of Huron Township, was formerly called Belden. It is on the rural mail route from Waltz. EXTINCT VILLAGES Old maps of Wayne County show a number of postoffices and villages that do not appear on maps of the present day. Some were founded by speculators and were doomed from the beginning to perish. Others served as social centers and trading points for certain districts until improved transportation diverted trade elsewhere and they succumbed. The following list contains most of these extinct villages and discontinued postoffices: Fairview, in Grosse Pointe Township, annexed to Detroit in 1907; Glcnwood, now a part of Wyandotte; Leesville, in Hamtramck Township; Meads Mill, in Northville Township, about a mile and a half north of Waterford; Navarre (or Oakwood), a suburb of Detroit, just across the River Rouge from Delray; Newburgh, in the southwest corner of Livonia Township (also called Nankin postoffice); Oak, in the southern part of Redford Township; Plank Road, in the northwest corner of the same township; Schwarzburg, on the south branch of the River Rouge in Nankin Township; Sibley, still a small station on the Michigan Central Railroad in Monguagon Township; Smith-vide, in the eastern part of Sumpter Township; South Trenton, in Monguagon Township; Surift, in the central part of Nankin Township; West Sumpter, near the Washtenaw County line in the western part of Sumpter Township; Whitewood, in the eastern part, and Yew in the western part of Greenfield Township.
