By the end of the twentieth century, the American West was home to nearly half of America’s immigrant population, including Asians and Armenians, Germans and Greeks, Mexicans, Italians, Swedes, Basques, and others. This book tells their rich and complex story—of adaptation and isolation, maintaining and mixing traditions, and an ongoing ebb and flow of movement, assimilation, and replenishment. These immigrants and their children built communities, added to the region’s culture, and contended with discrimination and the lure of Americanization. Book excerpt: As globalization and the flow of labor across the world accelerated during the latter part of the 20th century, the presence of foreign-born workers in a country's labor market became one of the most prominent and controversial features of modern economies. Countries that facilitated the arrival of foreign-born individuals often benefited from the increase in labor supply. An important channel for the benefits is through lower prices for consumer goods and services in the host country. This is not surprising because immigration is just another form of international trade, which often leads to cost savings and more diversity in the market. The immigrants themselves have also gained from international migration as it provides an opportunity to improve one's standard of living, pass remittances to family in the country of origin, and find new opportunities for general human flourishing in newly adopted surroundings.Despite the myriad benefits that can result from the free movement of labor around the world, there is still deep concern and political debate about immigration's aftermath. The main economic concern, apart from social concerns such as social cohesion, centers on whether international migrants adversely impact labor market opportunities of natives.The labor market prospects for foreign-born individuals, both in an absolute sense and in comparison to natives, are also very different across continents, as well as between countries that are in close proximity to one another. This variation could be driven by differences in the flexibility and structure of the host country's labor market or differences in the characteristics of the immigrants themselves. Examining the relative importance of these and other possible factors is another main theme in the study of immigration and the labor market. It is also addressed in the research presented in this Handbook.

Access Point Theory argues that the more points of access that institutions provide to interest groups, the cheaper lobbying will be, and, thus, the more lobbying will occur. This will lead to more complex policy, as policymakers insert specific provisions to benefit special interests, and, if one side of the debate has a lobbying advantage, to more biased policy, as the advantaged side is able to better take advantage of the cheaper lobbying. This book then uses Access Point Theory to explain why some countries have more protectionist and more complex trade policies than other; why some countries have stronger environmental and banking regulations than others; and why some countries have more complicated tax codes than others. In policy area after policy area, this book finds that more access points lead to more biased and more complex policy. Access Points provides scholars with a powerful tool to explain how political institutions matter and why countries implement the policies they do.

Book excerpt: Critical language pedagogy, also sometimes referred to as critical ELT, where English is the primary language involved, has a literature in which theoretical and specialized work has outstripped more practically-oriented material. Nevertheless, even practically-oriented publications in this area tend to address the experienced, well-resourced teacher, as opposed to those beginning in this area, or those without much professional support. With a view to helping prepare second language teachers to begin to engage with critical language pedagogy, the authors of this book start from areas of conventional L2 curriculum that teachers naturally use. Each chapter presents material pertinent to areas of language, language teaching and course delivery, starting from a fairly conventional perspective. It then attempts to explain how this conception can be extended drawing upon the ideas of critical (language) pedagogy and teachers' experiences. The authors' experience of working with teachers, who work under different circumstances, in teacher education courses and workshops form key elements of the book. Teachers’ voices are also given adequate space so as to provide a comprehensive picture and situated understanding of critical language pedagogy. Dialogical engagement with the initial perspectives of beginning critical language pedagogy teachers who do not necessarily have a fully-worked out "critical philosophy of teaching" or those who wish to practice critical ELT is another feature of the book. Finally, to strengthen the practical orientation of the book, teaching strategies and extracts of materials and lesson plans are also provided.
