Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church in Earnest Danger? Of what? Not indeed of the downfall of either Christianity or Protestantism. What believer in the truth of revelation, or what follower of the doctrines of the Reformation, has a moment's solicitude on that point? I, for one, feel not a single trepidation for the safety of either of these. I have no doubt of the final, complete, and glo rious triumph of truth over error, and good over evil. Not withstanding the vicissitudes of human affairs, and some of them disastrous ones too, I am a firm believer in the onward course of events. The way of Providence does not resemble one of our modern railways, but is more like a noble river, which is ever winding in its channel, and which, though, amidst its many convolutions, it seems sometimes rolling back upon its source, is ever flowing towards the ocean. In such an age as this, when it would look as if a destroying angel were passing over the despotisms of all Europe, and' making way for the sudden, unexpected, and universal reign of liberty, to doubt which way the current is flowing, betrays a deplorable ignorance of the tendencies of events, and of the designs of the great Ruler of the nations. But are liberty and religion identical? Are the downfall of tyranny and of infidelity sure to be contempo raucous? Will a false and seductive philosophy necessarily and immediately wither in the light and air of freedom? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church in Earnest: A Call for the Training Necessary for World Achievements The efficiency of the Church of Jesus Christ depends on the strength of her individual members. This being true, every child Of goo should be anxious to meet every condition that will lead to his largest development and most fruitful service. Many sources of strength stand out prominently in the Word Of God for the enlargement of the believer's life. I wish here to call special attention to the grace of liberality or giving as a source of strength. It may be difficult for some minds to comprehend how liberality can become a source Of power. I am satisfied that if we Will stay close to the Word Of God and accept its teachings on this, as on other mat ters Of revelation, we shall be led to recog nize this great truth. Book An Earnest Ministry the Need of the Times

Download or read book An Earnest Ministry the Need of the Times written by John Angell James and published by Solid Christian Books. This book was released on 2015-08-27 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the minister's business! Angels hover over him in his course, and chant over his labors their ancient song, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men;" redeemed men and women, saved by his instrumentality from the wrath of God, and the turbulence of passion, hail him in the language of the prophet, "How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that brings good tidings, that publishes peace;" while the Savior himself pronounces upon him the beatitude, "Blessed are the peace-makers, for they shall be called the children of God." Honored and happy man, minister of reconciliation, friend and promoter of peace, the world knows you not, because it knew not Christ; nor, perhaps, does even the church duly appreciate, or adequately reward, your services; but even now your work is its own reward—peace attends upon your steps, and blessings spring up in your path.

Book excerpt: At the start of the gay rights movement in 1969, evangelicalism's leading voices cast a vision for gay people who turn to Jesus. It was C.S. Lewis, Billy Graham, Francis Schaeffer and John Stott who were among the most respected leaders within theologically orthodox Protestantism. We see with them a positive pastoral approach toward gay people, an approach that viewed homosexuality as a fallen condition experienced by some Christians who needed care more than cure. With the birth and rise of the ex-gay movement, the focus shifted from care to cure. As a result, there are an estimated 700,000 people alive today who underwent conversion therapy in the United States alone. Many of these patients were treated by faith-based, testimony-driven parachurch ministries centered on the ex-gay script. Despite the best of intentions, the movement ended with very troubling results. Yet the ex-gay movement died not because it had the wrong sex ethic. It died because it was founded on a practice that diminished the beauty of the gospel. Yet even after the closure of the ex-gay umbrella organization Exodus International in 2013, the ex-gay script continues to walk about as the undead among us, pressuring people like me to say, "I used to be gay, but I'm not gay anymore. Now I'm just same-sex attracted." For orthodox Christians, the way forward is a path back to where we were forty years ago. It is time again to focus with our Neo-Evangelical fathers on care--not cure--for our non-straight sisters and brothers who are living lives of costly obedience to Jesus. With warmth and humor as well as original research, Still Time to Care will chart the path forward for our churches and ministries in providing care. It will provide guidance for the gay person who hears the gospel and finds themselves smitten by the life-giving call of Jesus. Woven throughout the book will be Richard Lovelace’s 1978 call for a "double repentance" in which gay Christians repent of their homosexual sins and the church repents of its homophobia--putting on display for all the power of the gospel.
