Book excerpt: Although the United States is becoming more accepting of LGBTQ identities, black people are still more likely than other racial groups to disapprove of non-heterosexuality. Previous research points to religion as a potential explanation for the more conservative sexual mores among blacks, but few studies have examined how religious institutions influence individual perspectives concerning sexual orientation. Using cultural theory and the institutional logics perspective, this article draws upon in-depth interviews with 20 black Christians to examine congregational climates toward non-heterosexuality. Further, this study examines how congregants perceive and evaluate their congregations’ climates concerning sexual orientation. Findings suggest black congregations tend to foster climates that are not affirming of non-heterosexuality; however, there is variation in how black congregations demonstrate non-affirmation. Respondents recalled similar experiences of non-affirmation of non-heterosexuality in their congregations but differed in their understanding of what constituted condemnation of LGBTQ identities. Furthermore, the majority of respondents expressed disapproval with black churches’ stances concerning non-heterosexuality, indicating dissonance between congregational climates and congregants’ individual views. These results help clarify the role religion plays in shaping individual views concerning sexual orientation and have implications for efforts to reduce homophobia among black people.
