Book Religion and the Making of Nigeria

Download or read book Religion and the Making of Nigeria written by Olufemi Vaughan and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Religion and the Making of Nigeria, Olufemi Vaughan examines how Christian, Muslim, and indigenous religious structures have provided the essential social and ideological frameworks for the construction of contemporary Nigeria. Using a wealth of archival sources and extensive Africanist scholarship, Vaughan traces Nigeria’s social, religious, and political history from the early nineteenth century to the present. During the nineteenth century, the historic Sokoto Jihad in today’s northern Nigeria and the Christian missionary movement in what is now southwestern Nigeria provided the frameworks for ethno-religious divisions in colonial society. Following Nigeria’s independence from Britain in 1960, Christian-Muslim tensions became manifest in regional and religious conflicts over the expansion of sharia, in fierce competition among political elites for state power, and in the rise of Boko Haram. These tensions are not simply conflicts over religious beliefs, ethnicity, and regionalism; they represent structural imbalances founded on the religious divisions forged under colonial rule.

Book Human Rights and the Mission of the Church in Nigeria

Download or read book Human Rights and the Mission of the Church in Nigeria written by Paul Odoeme and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2013 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human rights question constitutes a vital link to the mission of the Christian Church. The Church is thereby obliged by principles of the gospel mandate to defend, promote, and protect human rights. Using the Nigerian context as a model, this book examines how the Church exercises its mission towards salvaging the deplorable situation of human rights violations. The Church is accused of intrusive, ethnocentric, and triumphalist tendencies in some methods and structures, which constantly expose it to steady allegations of human rights violations. This scenario evokes an in-depth investigation into the matter to ascertain the extent of the Church's credibility and competence in the human rights question. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wither The Nigerian Church?Searchlight on the Nigerian Church and Impacts on the nations of the world by Prophet Victoria AdekoyaThis is a prophetic action book on the Nigerian Church and how it impacts the nations of the world. This particular series covers the period between 1993 to end 2016, cutting across the length and breadth of Nigeria. The searchlight touches on Churchs, Politicians, Government, ethnic groups, Islam, Boko Haram ravaging the country, corruption and occult influence and control over the territory of Nigeria. It gives vivid account of the happening here in the nation of Nigeria and how it will impact events from around the world prophetically including United States of America, Great Britain, Asia and other parts of Africa as the days dawn. One of my spiritual sons made a remark the other day that highlighted the agonies in God's heart about the current climate of the Nigerian Church. He said " The world is better than the Church". He works as an administrative staff in a church and had seen the ways of the clergy in his place of work. A few days later, I was discussing about the prayer pattern of the Nigerian church with a young pastor friend of mine. I told him that God is not happy with it because it negates His desire for the body of Christ in the nation. The pastor said "Any pastor who does not lead prayers in that pattern will have very few or no members in his church".It was revealed to me on 20 of October 1994, while praying in England that God wants to use Nigeria in the nations in this End-time before Jesus comes. Prior to this, in 1993, God had led me to scatter physically a church in North-central zone of Nigeria and to tell the occultic pastor that he would lose everything he was doing and end up in hell. He later sent someone to thank me for what I did. As a follow up to the revelation I received in 1994, God led me in 2001 to go to Lokoja to pray for Nigeria at the confluence of the two rivers that traverses the country. It was while praying in room 12 at Confluence Motel Adankolo junction in Lokoja that He gave me the second name of the ministry The Jury Ministry and He told me to use it to kill and destroy what He has not allowed in the church and the nations. Jer.1:10. Between that 2001 and 2006, I have been led by God to go to various areas of the country to intercede and deliver His messages to various groups in the country to let them know their roles in God's End-time assignment and prepare themselves to go ahead to perform them.I have been led to Ogoni land-representing our resource base, Tiv land-representing militancy, Ijebu land-representing economic control and syncretism in the church and Igbo land- representing Nigerians' penchant for travelling and the worship of mammon. I have been led to write Spiritual profiles of some countries of various continents of the world. Europe, Middle East, Asia and North-America. I have also done a zone by zone Spiritual profile of Nigeria and also written some Newsletters under a general caption-'His Word for Now' in which I highlighted areas where true Christians should check their spiritual standing and their preparedness to carry the gospel to the nations starting from our environment.

Book The Limits of a Divided Nation with Perspectives from the Bible

Download or read book The Limits of a Divided Nation with Perspectives from the Bible written by Michael Ufok Udoekpo and published by Resource Publications (CA). This book was released on 2020-01-31 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Udoekpo's work brilliantly and pastorally discusses the issues of conflict, friction, and disunity in the world--and in Nigeria in particular--from biblical, historical, and sociocultural perspectives. These issues, he stresses, are endemic in various fabrics of the Nigerian society, traceable to the family as the foundation of any given society. They are also found in religious, political, and media groups. Contributing factors, Udoekpo argues, are materialism, infidelity, relativism, and fundamentalism. Others are ethnocentrism, anthropocentricism, ignorance, bribery, and corruption with other forms of injustices. Drawing from the Bible, Udoekpo proposes prayer, proper education, truth-telling, restoration of family values, interreligious and cultural dialogue, ecumenism, enforcement of rule of law, faith, and absolute trust in God as antidotes to conflict, violence, friction, and disunity in our contemporary society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Church Unity in Nigeria Monographs No.1 The primary objective of this Monograph No.1 is to examine and evaluate the nature, scope, characteristics and issues of the unity of the Church in Nigeria from the times of the Pioneering missionaries to date. The Nigerian Church is characterized by great regional and international growth and spread, liveliness and enthusiasm, and a great show of religiosity and a manifest diversity of churches and denominations that carry out many activities and ministries that sometimes look divisive and competitive. To the extent that on the surface, Nigerians are deeply religious in all facets of life and they do demonstrate that in their vibrant Christianity with very strong ecumenics, associations and fellowships. However, negatively, the same large and vibrant Nigerian Church is also plagued by great divisions and splinter groupings, lack of unity, stiff competition and rivalry, and is also overwhelmingly dominated by ethnic, tribal, primordial and regional values, interests and sentiments. No single church, denomination, or organization can address effectively and adequately the problems and challenges of the Nigerian social environment alone. The task of addressing the problems, challenges and prospects of unity of the Church in Nigeria is immense and difficult. The best we can do is to introduce the subject matter for wider and general discussions and deliberations by all Christians. This is how we proposed that this subject matter be addressed. The first section presents a summary of the major issues of the unity of the Church that need to be discussed and addressed. The second section gives a summary guideline on how these issues could be defined and addressed. The third section presents and establishes a biblical and theological foundations of the unity of the Church based upon select relevant Bible Texts. This seeks to give a biblical and theological understanding and grounding of the major issues and challenges of unity of the Church. The fourth section presents a brief historical and social background of the context of the Nigerian Church as an answer to many questions and issues of diversity, competition, rivalry and schisms. It also outlines and highlights the nature, scope and characteristics of the Nigerian Church. The fifth section presents a brief history of the established Missionary Christianity and Church in Nigeria and how Christian Missions attempted to deal with the questions and issues of unity of the Church in their missionary work in Nigeria.Yusufu Turaki is a Distinguished Professor of Theology and Social Ethics at the Jos ECWA Theological Seminary (JETS) and Director of the Centre for the Study of Religion, Church and Society (CRCS), He is an ordained Minister with Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA). Book Religious Impact on the Nation State

Download or read book Religious Impact on the Nation State written by Pat Williams and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text examines the link between religion and politics both at the level of theory and with specific reference to Nigeria. The first part of the book focuses on major local issues, and the second on how religion affects the country's relations. The religious problem has become prominent, not only for its recurrence, but also for its intensity. Nigeria itself is plural with innumerable religious groups, although this need not be a problem if pluralism is used to promote freedom of association, democracy and human rights. It does become a problem if, as this book notes, religious groups make self-centered demands on the state; when the state succumbs to such demands or to blackmail; and when public officers use religious groups and leaders for their own political survival.
