Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church and Labor When the writing of this book was first considered, it was a question as to whether the discussion should deal with methods of work or with the spirit of the Church and Labor. It was decided that the latter is of greater importance, hence this selection of the treatment of the subject. It is frankly acknowledged that better things might truthfully have been said about the Church and worse things about Labor, but there is already considerable literature telling about what the Church has done and what La bor has left undone, especially when the question is discussed from the viewpoint of the Church. This book is written largely from the standpoint of Labor. An attempt is made to present the spirit which under lies the labor movement, and to show that. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World Problem Capital, Labor, and the Church The social message of the Catholic Church is of interest to all mankind. She alone succeeded in solving the greatest of social problems in the past, and her lessons are of equal importance in the present time. Hence it is to all alike that this book is addressed. In its plain exposition of Catholic morality and its application of historic facts there is no animosity or ill will towards any person, whether capitalist or laborer, Catholic or Protestant, Jew or unbeliever, but a burning desire to be of service to all. Though issued in time of war and serving as a preparation for the return of peace, the book is not restricted in its purpose to any particular period. It deals with the fundamental problems of modern life and with the unchanging principles of social justice and Christian charity as studied from the Catholic point of View. It is a work, therefore, equally necessary in all seasons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This on-the-ground labor history focuses on the bitterly contested labor conflict in the early 1990s at the A. E. Staley corn processing plant in Decatur, Illinois, where workers waged one of the most hard-fought struggles in recent labor history. Originally family-owned, A. E. Staley was bought out by the multinational conglomerate Tate & Lyle, which immediately launched a full-scale assault on its union workforce. Allied Industrial Workers Local 837 responded by educating and mobilizing its members, organizing strong support from the religious and black communities, building a national and international solidarity movement, and engaging in nonviolent civil disobedience at the plant gates. Drawing on seventy-five interviews, videotapes of every union meeting, and their own active involvement organizing with the Staley workers, Steven K. Ashby and C. J. Hawking bring the workers' voices to the fore and reveal their innovative tactics, such as work-to-rule and solidarity committees, that inform and strengthen today's labor movement.
