By obferved altitudes of the fun, (Problem IX) or by fome other way, let the watch be compared with apparent time, when it may be practicable or convenient, in order to determine the time which the watch will mark, or has marked, at the moment of noon at the ihip. 2. Add the obferved altitudes together, and divide the fum by their number, in order to have the mean obferved altitude. 3. Take the differences between the time of noon by the watch, and the time of the obfervation of each altitude. Find in Table XXIII, the multiplier for each difference or interval, add all the multipliers together, and divide the fum by their number, in order to have the mean multiplier. 4.. Find, by the Nautical Almanac, the fun's declination for noon (Problem 1); with which and the latitude by account take the correfpouding number out of Table XXII, and multiply it by the mean multiplier. The produce and the mean altitude added together will be the obferved meridian altitude, from which the latitude may be eafibly concluded (Problem IV). Example. March 7, 1792, in latitude 180. 45' N. by account, and longitude in0. 34' weft, the apparent time was determined by the fun's altitude; from which it was found that the watch was then 15' too flow for apparent time under that meridian. The ihip afterwards failed and made 13' of latitude to the fouth, and i. 56' of longitude to the weft. In this fituation (latitude 18. 32', and longitude 1130. 30') the four following altitudes of the Sun's lower limb were obferved, the eye being 13 feet above the fea: What is the fhip's latitude? The watch is too flow in longitude 1110. 34' W----Ship's difference in longitude W. Io. 56' =----- Therefore, in...
