Book A History of the Municipal Church of St Lawrence

Download or read book A History of the Municipal Church of St Lawrence written by Charles Kerry and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Municipal Church of St. Lawrence: Reading The archives of St. Lawrence's Church, in Reading, are amongst the oldest and most interesting in England. They commence in 1410, and are tolerably complete down to the present time. The earlier details are so graphic, that they afford not only a wonderful insight into the history and changes of the fabric, the exquisite nature of its furniture and decorations - so valuable to the ecclesiologist and art student - but also illustrate to a great extent the parochial life of the fifteenth and following centuries. It is quite beyond the Author's means to publish the documents in extenso, but he has endeavoured to illustrate, by hundreds of literal extracts, the various points of interest connected with the Church, and the manners and customs of the people; so that the present work will be found to contain all that is really interesting in the records, not only to the antiquary, but to the general reader. In many respects this work may be considered a typical history of every parish church in England - everywhere the ancient centre of parochial life; and it is on this account chiefly that the Author has felt justified and encouraged in his responsible undertaking. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Fortress: A Chronicle of Louisbourg, 1720-1760 Louisbourg was no mere isolated strong hold which could be lost or won without affecting the wider issues of oversea dominion. On the contrary, it was a necessary link in the chain of waterside posts which connected France with America by way of the Atlantic, the St Lawrence, the Great Lakes, and the Mississippi. But since the chain itself and all its other links, and even the peculiar relation of Louisbourg to the Acadians and the Conquest, have been fully described else where in the Chronicles of Canada, the present volume only tries to tell the purely individual tale. Strange to say, this tale seems never to have been told before; at least, not as one continuous whole. Of course, each siege has been described, over and over again, in many Special monographs as well as in countless books about Canadian history. But nobody. The mission was entrusted to a stalwart New Hampshire scotch-irishman, Major Robert Rogers, who as leader of a band of intrepid rangers had made himself the hero of the north ern frontier. Two hundred men were chosen for the undertaking, and on the 13th of September the party, in fifteen whaleboats, started up the St. Lawrence for Detroit. At the mouth of the Cuyahoga River, near the site of the present city of Cleveland, the travelers were halted by a band of Indian chiefs and warriors who, in the name of their great ruler Pontiac, de manded to know the object of their journeying. Parleys followed, in which Pontiac himself took part, and it was explained that the French had surrendered Canada to the English and that the English merely proposed to assume control of the western posts, with a view to friendly relations be tween the red men and the white men. Book excerpt: Excerpt from All Afloat: A Chronicle of Craft and Waterways Canada is the child of the sea. Her infancy was cradled by her waterways; and the life blood oi her youth was drawn from oceans, lakes, and rivers. No other land of equal area has ever been so intimately bound up with the changing fortunes of all its different waters, coast and inland, salt and fresh. The St Lawrence basin by itself is a thing to marvel at, for its mere stupendous size alone. Its mouth and estuary are both so vast that their salt waters far exceed those of all other river systems put together. Its tide runs farther in from the Atlantic than any other tide from this or any other ocean. And its Great Lakes are appropriately known by their proud name because they contain more fresh water than all the world beside. Size for size, this one river system is so pre-eminently first in the sum of these three attributes that there is no competing second to be found elsewhere. Petitions and statements were addressed to the king by Mgr de Laval, the head of ecclesiastical affairs in the colony, by the governor Avaugour, and by the Jesuit fathers; and Pierre Boucher, governor of the district of Three Rivers, was sent to France as a delegate to present them. Louis and his minister studied the conditions of the colony on the St Lawrence and decided in 1663 to give it a new constitution. The charter of the One Hundred Associates was cancelled and the old Council of Quebec - formed in 1647 - was reorganized under the name of the Sovereign Council. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mariner of St. Malo: A Chronicle of the Voyages, of Jacques Cartier How like or unlike the features of Cartier this picture in the town hall may be, we have no means of telling. Painted probably in 1839, it has hung there for more than seventy years, and the record of the earlier prints or drawings from which its artist drew his inspiration no longer survives. We know, indeed, that an ancient map of the eastern coast of America, made some ten years after the first of Cartier's voyages, has pictured upon it a group of figures that represent the landing of the navigator and his followers among the Indians of Gaspe. It was the fashion of the time to attempt by such decorations to make maps vivid. Demons, deities, mythological figures and naked savages disported themselves along the borders of the maps and helped to decorate unexplored spaces of earth and ocean. Of this sort is the illustration on the map in question. But it is generally agreed that we have no right to identify Cartier with any of the figures in the scene, although the group as a whole undoubtedly typifies his landing upon the seacoast of Canada. Book The Bad Side of Books

Download or read book The Bad Side of Books written by D.H. Lawrence and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You could describe D.H. Lawrence as the great multi-instrumentalist among the great writers of the twentieth century. He was a brilliant, endlessly controversial novelist who transformed, for better and for worse, the way we write about sex and emotions; he was a wonderful poet; he was an essayist of burning curiosity, expansive lyricism, odd humor, and radical intelligence, equaled, perhaps, only by Virginia Woolf. Here Geoff Dyer, one of the finest essayists of our day, draws on the whole range of Lawrence’s published essays to reintroduce him to a new generation of readers for whom the essay has become an important genre. We get Lawrence the book reviewer, writing about Death in Venice and welcoming Ernest Hemingway; Lawrence the travel writer, in Mexico and New Mexico and Italy; Lawrence the memoirist, depicting his strange sometime-friend Maurice Magnus; Lawrence the restless inquirer into the possibilities of the novel, writing about the novel and morality and addressing the question of why the novel matters; and, finally, the Lawrence who meditates on birdsong or the death of a porcupine in the Rocky Mountains. Dyer’s selection of Lawrence’s essays is a wonderful introduction to a fundamental, dazzling writer.
