Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christmas Carols New and Old The time-honoured and delightful custom of thus celebrating the Birthday of the Holy Child seems, with some change of form, to be steadily and rapidly gaining ground. Instead of the itinerant ballad-singer or the little bands of wandering children, the practice of singing Carols in Divine Service, or by a full choir at some fixed meeting, is becoming prevalent. Among the Carols here given are some which are best suited for the old simple mode of rendering; others which require more ample means for their performance. Some, from their legendary. Book The Carols of Christmas

Download or read book The Carols of Christmas written by Andrew Gant and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2015-09-15 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Andrew Gant, Oxford professor and renowned British composer, The Carols of Christmas is a joyous account of the history behind our favorite carols--from Advent through Epiphany. Everyone loves a carol--in the end, even Ebenezer Scrooge had a soft spot for them! They have the power to evoke a special type of mid-winter joy, like the aroma of gingerbread or the twinkle of lights on a tree. It's a kind of magic. But how did they get that magic? Gant--a choirmaster, church musician, university professor, and writer--tells the story of twenty carols, each accompanied by lyrics and music, unraveling a captivating, and often surprising, tale of great musicians and thinkers, saints and pagans, shepherds and choirboys. Along the way, Gant answers some of the biggest questions he's received about these beloved carols over the years, including: How did the most beloved carols come to be? Why do we sing the versions of carols that we do? How did these carols stand the test of time? Readers get to delve into the history of favorites like "Good King Wenceslas," "Away in a Manger," and "O, Tannenbaum," discovering along the way how "Hark, the Herald Angels Sing" came to replace "Hark, how all the welkin' ring" and how Ralph Vaughan Williams applied the tune of an English folk song about a dead ox to a poem by a nineteenth-century American pilgrim to make "O Little Town of Bethlehem." A charming book that brims with anecdote, expert knowledge, and Christmas spirit, The Carols of Christmas is a fittingly joyous account of one of the best-loved musical traditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Carols Old and Carols New: For Use at Christmas and Other Seasons of the Christian Year The excuse, if any be needed, for the publication of this collection of carols, is a double one: viz., the happy and widely prevailing return in recent years to the old custom of carol singing, and the desire on the part of the compiler to further this custom by placing within the reach of those who engage in it, an abundance of good material. Some of the carols presented in this volume already have appeared in the Parish Choir, but none are here reprinted which have not, in at least one circle, attained some degree of popularity. For the convenience of those who are accustomed to the use of the carols in the leaflet form in which they have been published, they retain the same numbering in this collection. It is not the compiler's purpose to dwell upon the antiquity, the history, and the beauty of the custom of carol singing as well at Easter and other seasons of the Christian Year as in connection with the Christmas Festival. There is an abundance of literature on the subject as may be seen in the list of publications to be found in the latter part of this volume. Download or read book Ancient English Christmas Carols MCCCC to MDCC Classic Reprint written by Edith Rickert and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient English Christmas Carols MCCCC to MDCC Antiquity of Carol Singing "I pray you, sirs, both more and less, Sing these carols in Christemas." So wrote John Awdlay, the blind and deaf chaplain of Haughmond Abbey in Shropshire, about the year 1426, showing that by this time the custom was well established in England. But indeed praise of "Dan Noel" can be traced back at least two centuries earlier. There is an Anglo-Norman carol, which was perhaps sung in the days of King John, in which Noel, after enjoining upon every man to keep open house and to furnish his neighbour drink "until he nods his head and sleeps by day," concludes with the old Saxon exchange of healths "Wesseyl" and "Drinc-heyl." This carol then suggests the probability that there were Yule songs, at least of the wassail type, among the Anglo-Saxons; and it is almost certain that customs originally pagan, such as the procession of the boar's head and the holly and ivy contests, would have been accompanied by some kind of song-dance.
