Book Christian Mission in the Modern World

Download or read book Christian Mission in the Modern World written by John Stott and published by Inter-Varsity Press. This book was released on 2016-01-15 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus sends us into the world just as God the Father sent him - and yet Christians continue to disagree on what this involves. Some believe that the focus of Christian mission is evangelizing and 'saving souls'. Others emphasize global justice issues or relief and development work. Is either view correct on its own? John Stott's classic volume, first published forty years ago, presents an enduring view of Christian mission that is just as needed today. Newly updated and expanded by Christopher J. H. Wright, Christian Mission in the Modern World provides a biblically based approach to mission that addresses both spiritual and physical needs. With his trademark clarity and conviction, Stott illuminates how the Great Commission itself not only assumes the proclamation that makes disciples, but also teaches obedience to the Great Commandment of love and service. Wright has expertly updated the original book and demonstrates the continuing relevance of Stott's prescient thinking. This balanced approach to mission encourages current and future Christians to embrace an unconflicted and holistic model of ministry.

Book Modern Interpretations of the Gospel Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book Modern Interpretations of the Gospel Life Classic Reprint written by A. A. Berle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Interpretations of the Gospel Life The New Testament is essentially a modern book. En grafted into the life and permeating the thought of the centuries as is the power of its Central Figure, the one thing that impresses the student more than all else, as he endeavors to catch the spirit of New Testament teaching, is its thor oughly modern tone. The setting is local and Oriental, but the principles and their application are universal and human. The discourses here gathered together are an attempt to select from a ministry extending over a period of ten years, most of it in a single pulpit, the ruling ideas and efforts of that ministry to present a spherical view of the application of the Christian gospel to the whole of modern life, as we live it in America. Carrying out this purpose, I have made several excursions into the region of apostolic psychology; then again, I have tried to apply the teachings of Christ to the social and political life of our time, an experiment always fruitful of danger and misunderstanding, but none the less necessary for that. I have further outlined the relations of Christianity to our educational ideas and method, especially the place of the Bible in university instruction, following this with a literary criticism or two, in which I have made some observations on the literary and dramatic portraiture of gospel ideas. Then, too, I have added a number of dis courses on the spiritual life itself, as distinguished from the various modes of it which I have been describing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foundations: A Statement of Christian Belief in Terms of Modern Thought The modern world is asking questions. Christianity and its traditional theology have come down to us from an age very different from our own, an age when the sun and the stars moved round the earth, when the meaning of natural law and evolution was only dimly apprehended, when the psychology of religion, the historical method and the critical study of ancient documents were yet unborn. These things touch the foundations of the old beliefs, and it is about the foundations that the world is asking. This position is sustained by what we are con scious of in ourselves and by the universal history of mankind. Man has a capacity for religion, faculties which are useless without it, and wants which God alone can satisfy. Accordingly wherever he is, in whatever age or country, he has - with a few individual exceptions easily accounted for some sort of religious notions and some form of religious worship. Download or read book Jesus Christ and the World Today Classic Reprint written by Grace Hutchins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-04 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jesus Christ and the World Today The aim of these studies is to seek in and through the mind and experience of Jesus Christ the way of life for individuals, churches, classes, and nations that shall lead toward a solution of our present problems. We believe that Jesus Christ is the hope of the world; the studies assume this belief and attempt to analyze its implications for the world today. They do not attempt, how ever, to present an economic or political program. We believe that such programs are very definitely the concern of Christians, but intelligent discus sion of programs must follow a clear analysis of our personal share in social wrongs and of the kind of relationships we should try to express in our economic and political life. Just as the preparation of these studies was begun, The Untried Door, by the Reverend Rich ard Roberts, came to us. We read it with a deep sense of agreement and gratitude. We must ex press our indebtedness, also, to the late Walter Rauschenbusch whose Christianity and the Social Crisis translated for us several years ago the hope of the Kingdom into terms of modern life. Book Christianity in Its Modern Expression Classic Reprint

Download or read book Christianity in Its Modern Expression Classic Reprint written by George Burman Foster and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity in Its Modern Expression George Burman Foster was born on the second of April, 1857, and died on the twenty-second of December, 1918. Prior to his occupancy of the chair of the Philosophy of Religion in the University of Chicago he was Professor of Systematic The ology in the Divinity School of the same institution. The pres ent volume embodies his lectures on the dogmatics and ethics of the Christian religion in the form in which these were last delivered to his theological classes. The main body of the book is made up of the dictated portion of the lectures. The foot-notes contain a report, also practically verbatim, of elabora tions and extemporaneous remarks introduced by the lecturer at the indicated points of the main discussion. Former students will recognize here especially many of the brilliant and memorable sayings of this inspiring and thought-provoking teacher. Professor Poster was a remarkably sympathetic interpreter of points of view other than his own. But in his exposition of the appreciations and viewpoint of the Christian religious man, one knew that it was not a case of understanding through mere sympathetic imagination; he was speaking out of the depths of his own experience. He knew what religion was, for it was his daily life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Although, therefore, a general agreement will be found to exist throughout the series, one or two of the writers have made no secret of their holding a much more limited view of the scope and character of Evolution than that represented by the rest. Should exception be taken to this circumstance, we would respectfully submit, that in the settlement of great vital questions it must tend in a much higher degree to healthy, thorough, and impartial discussion when debaters are left perfectly free in every thing save the essentials of the point at issue. In the hope that the following pages may be found helpful by many whose spirits are shadowed by the scepticism of the age, we now commit them. Book A Guide to the Study of the Christian Religion Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Guide to the Study of the Christian Religion Classic Reprint written by William Herbert Perry Faunce and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-09 with total page 772 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to the Study of the Christian Religion The present volume has been prepared in recognition of the situation above indicated. In order to do justice to the specialized character of scholarship, a group of men has been asked to co-operate, each contributing an exposition of the problems and the methods of study in the field in which he himself is competent to speak. There has, of course, been no attempt to secure absolute uniformity of views. The only common presuppositions of the various portions are the acceptance of the historical method and the belief that the interpretation of Christianity must be in accord with the rightful tests of scientific truth fulness and actual vitality in the modern world. If certain diversities of opinion appear, the volume will only reflect the spirit of freedom which prevails in theological scholarship today as well as in other fields of research. It is a hopeful sign, however, that the historical method, with all its freedom, yet induces a typical attitude and spirit, so that a course of study dominated by this point of view will attain a consistency which may form the basis for positive convictions concerning Christianity and for fruitful constructive work in the church of Jesus Christ. Book The New Life in Christ

Download or read book The New Life in Christ written by Joseph Agar Beet and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Life in Christ: A Study in Personal Religion This volume is a necessary sequel to an earlier one entitled Through Christ to God, in which I endeavored to set forth the historical basis of the Christian faith and hope. The present volume goes on to delineate the goodly structure of the Christian life which rests securely on that firm foundation. In the former volume, what may be called the theological element claimed almost exclusive attention. In the present one, inward spiritual experience and practical life occupy a large place. Each volume needs to be supplemented by the other. For theology is useless unless it bears fruit in righteousness and peace and beneficence; and inward experience is fitful and uncertain unless it rests on reliable external evidence. The New Life in Christ portrayed in this volume, I have endeavored to investigate according to the principles of scientific research. Book The Christian View of the World

Download or read book The Christian View of the World written by George John Blewett and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian View of the World: Nathaniel William Taylor Lectures for Before, Delivered Before the Divinity School of Yale University The cumenical theology is old; and from the beginning was inevitable. The greatest of the Apostles could not be blind to the significance of the new life that was in them; in their Lord they read the eternal constitution of the world. And when Christianity became the world's religion, it was inevitable that theology should become a secular labour of mankind. Christian experience, maintaining its reality as the religion of a Hellenised world to which reason and the demand for rational insight were also realities, could not do other than set itself to interpret the Person of Christ; and in the interpretation it found, as had the Apostles, a view of God and man. It is the conviction of these lectures that the significance of that view, so far from being exhausted or outlived in the long movement of human history, is continuously unfolding itself; both for the science of man, seeking the intelligible unity of the strangely diverse facts of our life; and for the practice of man, seeking to bring itself deliberately, and from its own centres of affection and volition, into accord with that eternal truth and unity of the world. But a significance continually unfolding means that an eternal life is in its own order manifesting itself; primarily in religion, secondarily in theology the intellectual reflex of religion.
