Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, which was first published in 1931, is for every person who suspects and hopes there is a better way to live responsibly and compassionately in the complex world we share. In this book, Jones challenges us to go deeper, question and ultimately discover the effect of Jesus’ principles on humanity, regardless one’s background or predisposed religious views. “I trust this book will be an unhesitating, but not a too-light, easy, ‘Yes’ to the question as to whether the Sermon on the Mount is practicable. If the reading of it brings to the reader what the writing of it has brought to the writer in these months of meditation, then we will both be repaid a hundredfold. A trusted friend said to the writer, ‘You are not a theologian; you are a divining rod. You tell us where there is water beneath—remember your function.’ In this book I have tried to remember my function. I have left to others the discussion of the critical questions involved in the accounts of the Sermon on the Mount as reported by Matthew and Luke. I have not been able to escape theological implications—who can escape them?—but I have tried to leave to the theologians the labeling of the wells and their more accurate description while I have endeavored to be true to my friend’s commission and have pointed to where in the Sermon on the Mount I think water may be found. There is water here—dig and drink!”—E. Stanley Jones, Introduction

Book Jesus the Great Philosopher

Download or read book Jesus the Great Philosopher written by Jonathan T. Pennington and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2020-10-20 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of us tend to live as though Jesus represents the "spiritual part" of our lives. We don't clearly see how he relates to the rest of our experiences, desires, and habits. How can Jesus, the Bible, and Christianity become more than a compartmentalized part of our lives? Highly regarded New Testament scholar and popular teacher Jonathan Pennington argues that we need to recover the lost biblical image of Jesus as the one true philosopher who teaches us how to experience the fullness of our humanity in the kingdom of God. Jesus teaches us what is good, right, and beautiful and offers answers to life's big questions: what it means to be human, how to be happy, how to order our emotions, and how we should conduct our relationships. This book brings Jesus and Christianity into dialogue with the ancient philosophers who asked the same big questions about finding meaningful happiness. It helps us rediscover biblical Christianity as a whole-life philosophy, one that addresses our greatest human questions and helps us live meaningful and flourishing lives.

Book The Sermon on the Mount and Human Flourishing

Download or read book The Sermon on the Mount and Human Flourishing written by Jonathan T. Pennington and published by Baker Academic. This book was released on 2017-06-20 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sermon on the Mount, one of the most influential portions of the Bible, is the most studied and commented upon portion of the Christian Scriptures. Every Christian generation turns to it for insight and guidance. In this volume, a recognized expert on the Gospels shows that the Sermon on the Mount offers a clear window into understanding God's work in Christ. Jonathan Pennington provides a historical, theological, and literary commentary on the Sermon and explains how this text offers insight into God's plan for human flourishing. As Pennington explores the literary dimensions and theological themes of this famous passage, he situates the Sermon in dialogue with the Jewish and Greek virtue traditions and the philosophical-theological question of human flourishing. He also relates the Sermon's theological themes to contemporary issues such as ethics, philosophy, and economics.

Book Life in the Image of God

Download or read book Life in the Image of God written by Ronald C. Calhoun and published by WestBowPress. This book was released on 2013-09-06 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The King has come. The God of love planned reconciliation and transformation for the people he created. He planned liberation from bondage for all creation through the life, death, and resurrected life of his Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus the King has come. He has inaugurated the kingdom. The Sermon on the Mount (Matt. 57) is the constitution of that kingdom. The constitution is intended to make Christlike disciples. The central dynamic of the constitution is godlike love and is based on his grace. The Sermon begins with the essence of character, which is the foundation of all relationships and conduct. Who we are determines the influence we have and controls our conduct. Our conduct is based on right relationships with God, others, self, and the material world. The Sermon is practical, dealing with every aspect of life. Our relationship with God is to be one of reverence and self-discipline. Our relationship to possessions calls for rejection of slavery to those possessions and to worry. In relationship to self, we must avoid destructive criticism and exercise discernment. Many areas are discussed in our relationship to others, such as murder, sex, retaliation, and more. Join me in the study of the kingdom constitution as it reveals how to live life in the image of God. All who will may become a part of the kingdom by offering full allegiance to the King and by living life by the rule of godlike love.

Download or read book Jesus Outside the Lines written by Scott Sauls and published by Tyndale House Publishers, Inc.. This book was released on 2015-03-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether the issue of the day on Twitter, Facebook, or cable news is our sexuality, political divides, or the perceived conflict between faith and science, today’s media pushes each one of us into a frustrating clash between two opposing sides. Polarizing, us-against-them discussions divide us and distract us from thinking clearly and communicating lovingly with others. Scott Sauls, like many of us, is weary of the bickering and is seeking a way of truth and beauty through the conflicts. Jesus Outside the Lines presents Jesus as this way. Scott shows us how the words and actions of Jesus reveal a response that does not perpetuate the destructive fray. Jesus offers us a way forward—away from harshness, caricatures, and stereotypes. In Jesus Outside the Lines, you will experience a fresh perspective of Jesus, who will not (and should not) fit into the sides.

Download or read book Victory Through Surrender written by E. Stanley Jones and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-30 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is one of the best books that I have ever read. E. Stanley Jones was a great man who walked with God. His wisdom developed over a lifetime is distilled here. The only path to victory - joy, peace, and purpose in life - is by surrendering one's life to God and spending the rest of one's life surrendering over and over again until it becomes a habit. It is a process, one that takes time and self-discipline. But the result, as Jesus promised, is a life that is full and overflowing - not one without pain - but one of overcoming trial after trial by taking direction from the One who knows and loves us like no one else. The secret of how to do that is in this book. Harold G. Koenig, M.D. Director, Center for Spirituality, Theology and Health Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina

Cofounder Dr. Bob among early AAs and their families. These are of great importance and utility today if you are to be healed of alcoholism. They cover the Bible, Jesus Christ, prayer, healing, alcoholism, daily devotions, Quiet Time, the Oxford Group, Rev. Samuel M. Shoemaker, conversion, and other relevant religious topics. Other books were mentioned elsewhere as having been read and circulated by Dr. Bob, and are included.

Book Comparative Characterization in the Sermon on the Mount

Download or read book Comparative Characterization in the Sermon on the Mount written by Arren Bennet Lawrence and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-03-24 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sermon on the Mount contains many comparisons. In this book, the functions of these comparisons are studied by the methodology called comparative characterization. Characterization is the way a character is characterized in a narrative. Comparative characterization is the characterization of a character using comparisons. In comparative characterization, another character is used as a foil to bring out a characteristic trait of a concerned character. Jesus characterized the ideal disciple in the Sermon on the Mount with many descriptions and imperatives. To characterize the ideal disciple Jesus used many comparisons and highlighted the characteristic features that embody the ideal disciple. The many comparisons used in the Sermon on the Mount are identified in this study through comparative characterization. In addition, the teleological purpose of the comparisons, which is to play as foil to the characterization of the ideal disciple, is identified and highlighted. Thus, this study identifies Jesus' characterization of the ideal disciple and his complex portrayal of the ideal disciple with the many uses of comparisons in the descriptions and imperatives of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount.
