Book The Christ of the 40 Days

Download or read book The Christ of the 40 Days written by A. B. Simpson and published by Whitaker House. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The heartbreaking events of Good Friday did not signal the end of Jesus Christ’s ministry to His disciples—far from it. His resurrection on Easter morning was the beginning of a unique and significant time in His ministry on earth. For the next forty days, until His glorious ascension to heaven, Jesus appeared many times to His followers. During this remarkable period, He taught them about the kingdom of God and explained the requirements of discipleship, His own divine nature, and the power they would soon receive to expand the kingdom of God “into all the world” (Mark 16:15). Today, we can experience that same power to accomplish God’s work. Those forty days were a link between heaven and earth that is a pattern for us. As we walk with the resurrected Christ, we discover how to reproduce His life in our own experience, and we gain a new sense of His glorious reality and continual presence with us day by day. Just before His ascension, Jesus promised to be with us “all the days,” even to the end of the age. Relive those forty days with Christ, following the risen Lord to a higher place of spiritual life and victory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Last Discourses of Our Lord: Arranged as Readings for the Forty Days of Lent Among the most sublime utterances of our Blessed Lord, would be placed, by the majority of Christians, His last Discourses. These were delivered partly in the Upper Chamber in Jerusalem and partly in some place on the way to Gethsemane. They are recorded by S. John in his Gospel, and are addressed to the eleven faithful apostles, and they constitute at once Christ's farewell and His final revelation to them. The pathetic occasion on which they were spoken, and the sublime character of the subjects of which they treat, endow these Discourses with a profound and unique interest for every Christian, and yet they rarely form the subject of addresses, and among our devotional works I know of only one in which they are treated with any fulness, namely, The Upper Chamber, by the Rev. Father Benson. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Olivet to Patmos: The First Christian Century in Picture and Story During forty days after Jesus arose from the dead he remained, so far as we can know, on earth. He was not with his disciples all the time, but only appeared to them now and again, sometimes to one alone, sometimes to the Eleven, for Judas was dead. Once or twice he appeared to a large number of those who believed in him. We can understand now why our Lord took such a course as this. It was to make his disciples understand and really feel that even when he was absent from their sight he was actu ally present with them. If he had remained with them all the time during those forty days it would have been as hard for them to feel this when at last he left them to re. Turn into heaven as it would have been at any time before his death. They would have been almost as crushed and hopeless at the Ascension as they were when Jesus was crucified. And if he had not appeared to them more than once or twice after the resurrection they would soon have found it hard to believe that he had risen from the dead at all. They would have come to think that perhaps they had deceived themselves, perhaps they had only had a sort of vision of him, and they certainly would not have been able to preach with convincing power that Christ was risen indeed. But these six weeks of Jesus' frequent appearances and disappearances, while it taught them that they could not have him always with them, also gave them a sense of constant communion with him. They felt that he knew where they were and what they were doing, even when they did not see him among them, and they began to understand in some measure that it was not necessary that he should remain on earth in order to be with them always, as he had promised to be. They learned to under stand that whether absent or present his love and guidance would be always theirs; and so they became prepared for that final parting which was not in reality a parting, since it could not deprive them of the assurance that he was their ever-present Saviour and friend.
