Book Israel s Past in Present Research

Download or read book Israel s Past in Present Research written by V. Philips Long and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 1999-06-23 with total page 633 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The debate over history, history-writing, and the scientific study of history is reaching an apex in the late twentieth century and shows no signs of abating in the near future. The literature on the topic is prodigious. The time is thus ripe for an anthology of essays of the sort that Professor Long has collected, essays that trace the history of the issues that have fed into the debate. The classic and contemporary essays presented here provide an overview and introduction to the topic, bringing together the most essential of these in a handy compilation. The book is organized in six sections: (1) The State of Old Testament Historiography (2) Ancient Near Eastern Historiography (3) Ancient Israelite Historiography (4) Method in the Study of Ancient Israelite Historiography (5) The Historical Impulse in the Old Testament (6) The Future of Israel’s Past Long’s goal is to provide a context for Israelite history-writing within the milieu of the ancient Near East, expose the methodologies and assumptions of various approaches and perspectives on historiography, and provide access to essays that examine the contribution of the Hebrew Scriptures themselves to the origins of history-writing. The final essay, by Long, points the way to future research and topics that will move the discussion forward into the next millennium. Professor V. Philips Long teaches Old Testament at Covenant Theological Seminary, St. Louis.

Book When God Wanted to Destroy the Chosen People

Download or read book When God Wanted to Destroy the Chosen People written by Gili Kugler and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-06-04 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to narratives in the Bible the threats of the people’s end come from various sources, but the most significant threat comes, as learned from the Pentateuch, from God himself. What is the theological meaning of this tradition? In what circumstances did it evolve? How did it stand alongside other theological and socio-political concepts known to the ancient authors and their diverse audience? The book employs a diachronic method that explores the stages of the tradition’s formation and development, revealing the authors’ exegetical purposes and ploys, and tracing the historical realities of their time. The book proposes that the motif of the threat of destruction existed in various forms prior to the creation of the stories recorded in the final text of the Pentateuch. The inclusion of the motif within specific literary contexts attenuated the concept of destruction by presenting it as a phenomenon of specific moments in the past. Nevertheless, the threat was resurrected repeatedly by various authors, for use as a precedent or a justification for present affliction.

Book Approaches to the Chosen Place

Download or read book Approaches to the Chosen Place written by Rannfrid I. Thelle and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-04-10 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deuteronomy's command to restrict cultic practice to one "chosen place" has occupied a central position in scholars' understandings of the book and their reconstruction of Israelite political and religious history. The debates about the date of Deuteronomy, its proposed connections to "Josiah's reform", and, most profoundly, the "Deuteronomistic History (DH) hypothesis" have dominated study of the idea of "chosen place". These debates have, to a large extent, determined how we read Deuteronomy and the Former Prophets in general. Through a reading of key texts from these corpora, this book provides a new, textually grounded, perspective of the "chosen place."

Book After Emmaus

    Book Details:
  • Author : Brian J. Tabb
  • Publisher : Crossway
  • Release : 2021-11-17
  • ISBN : 1433573873
  • Pages : 231 pages

Download or read book After Emmaus written by Brian J. Tabb and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2021-11-17 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The church's mission does not begin with the Great Commission, but is integrally related to the grand storyline of Scripture." Did the Old Testament simply point to the coming of Christ and his saving work, or is there more to the story? After his resurrection, the Lord Jesus revealed how his suffering, glory, and mission plan for the nations are in fact central to the biblical story of redemption. After Emmaus shows how Christology and missiology are integrally connected throughout Scripture, especially in the teaching of Jesus and the apostles. Brian Tabb explains what Luke 24:46–47 reveals about God's messianic promises in the Old Testament, their fulfillment in the New Testament, and the purpose of the church. By understanding Jesus's last words to his disciples, Christians today will be motivated to participate in the Messiah's mission.
