Book The Choral Orchestral Works of Ralph Vaughan Williams

Download or read book The Choral Orchestral Works of Ralph Vaughan Williams written by Stephen Town and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-12-06 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Choral-Orchestral Works of Ralph Vaughan Williams: Autographs, Context, Discourse combines contextual knowledge, a musical commentary, an inventory of the holograph manuscripts, and a critical assessment of the opus to create substantial and meticulous examinations of Ralph Vaughan Williams’s choral-orchestral works. The contents include an equitable choice of pieces from the various stages in the life of the composer and an analysis of pieces from the various stages of Williams’s life. The earliest are taken from the pre-World War I years, when Vaughan Williams was constructing his identity as an academic and musician—Vexilla Regis (1894), Mass (1899), and A Sea Symphony (1910). The middle group are chosen from the interwar period—Sancta Civitas (1925), Benedicite (1929), Magnificat (1932), Five Tudor Portraits (1935), Dona nobis pacem (1936)—written after Vaughan Williams had found his mature voice. The last cluster—Thanksgiving for Victory (1944), Fantasia (Quasi Variazione) on the ‘Old 104’ Psalm Tune(1949), Sons of Light (1950), Hodie (1954), The Bridal Day/Epithalamion (1938/1957)—typify the works finished or revisited during the final years of the composer’s life, near the end of the Second World War and immediately before or after his second marriage (1953).

Book excerpt: Ralph Vaughan Williams’ incidental music for Gilbert Murray’s English translation of Euripides’ Electra is edited and arranged for orchestra by Alan Tongue. Vaughan Williams was brought into the production of three Greek plays by the dancer Isadora Duncan, with the public performance taking place at London’s Royal Court Theatre on Friday 31 May 1912. A preview of the production, appearing in The Globe, remarked of Vaughan Williams’ musical settings: “they are an attempt at something new, and something which is neither German nor French. This music is no experiment in style. It would seem, rather, as though the composer had disclaimed all styles and all schools, and found direct inspiration in the material of the poet’s inspiration, and the result is something of undeniable beauty.”

Book Vaughan Williams

Download or read book Vaughan Williams written by James Day and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was one of the first estimates of Vaughan Williams to appear after his death in 1958 at the age of eighty-six, while still at the height of his musical powers. It has now been extensively revised by James Day, particularly in the light of the increasing interest shown in Vaughan Williams's music by the major gramophone companies, of the important studies of the composer which have been undertaken since the book was first published, and of the gratifying revival of English folk-music among the young. The deep roots of British musical tradition, stretching back in time through the work of Purcell, Byrd, Tallis, Gibbons and many others to the masters of the early polyphony, are very evident in the work of Vaughan Williams, who was also a progressive composer in the modern idiom. His qualities of integrity, power and vision continue to be relevant. The man and his music are 'all of a piece,' as James Day shows; and those who value such qualities in the composer as a person will find them in his compositions.
