Excerpt: ...how they should be ranked below another class of beings worshipped on the same occasion: but if we consider the Shins as mere spirits, the representation of the classic is of easy explanation. In the Commentary on the Yih-king, it is asked, " If Heaven does not oppose, how can men, and how can the Kwei Shins?" Here Heaven evidently refers to the Divinity, in the Chinese estimation, whose opposition not being manifested, the opposition of the Kwei Shin would fa: ine'fectual. The Kwei Shin therefore, as spirits are distinct from the Divinity, and unable to oppose him. Another commentator says, "those who confer benefits arc men, tho-e who do not oppose are the Kwei Shins: but we must act agreeably to the mind of Heaven, before we can obtain such results." Here also the subjection of the Kwei Shins, as spirits, to H 'avett or the Divinity i clear. Again, "In this diagram, after saying that the divinations do not oppose, it follows that the Kwei Shins are compliant; but ih writer carries the idea further up to Shan;-te, without whom the Kwei Shins of the hills and rivers could do nothing with the di.gtaros. Thus it appears, that Te is Lord of the hundred Shins, and when blessings come from above, it shew-) that the mind of Heaven is grati. fied, and that neither men nor Shins can oppose." From the above extracts it is evident, that Heaven, Te, or Shang-te, is the Supreme Power, and that the Kwei Shins are spirits, who cannot oppose his will, because he is Lord of the hundred Shins. If in all this we render the phrase Kwei Shins by spirits, we see no difficulty, because spirits, viewed as mere invisible intelligences, are undoubtedly subject to the. Ruler of all. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Review of History and Politics, and General Repository of Literature and State Papers, Vol. 3 In acknowledging the merit of the British in a few branches, wherein it is beyond the limits Of any degree of prejudice or impudence to contest their superiority, the authors of the report are careful to add such qualifications and equivalents, as to show but too clearly, the reluctance with which they yield, in any one instance, to the necessity Of exhibitingtheir rivals to advantage. This will be fully exemplified in the course Of our remarks on the several sections of the work, but it may not be amiss to cite here, in support of our position, an example or two from which, moreover, pretty certain conclu sions may be at once deduced, as to the feelings and views of the writers. In speaking Of Persian literature, they make the following acknowledgment. Almost all that has been done for this literature has been the work Of the English, who have enjoyed more means, and have been instigated by stronger mo tives of interest, in prosecuting the study of the language. They add, after detailing the researches Of the French so'nans in the same branch We know very well that these labours cannot enter in comparison with those of the British; but they prove at least that the latter would find rivals among us, if we, like them, were seconded by circumstances, and if the govern ment would deign to encourage our efforts. Immediately after, in commencing their notice Of Chinese literature, they express themselves thus: To talk of China is, as it were, to return to our own literary domain; for, the same reputation and superiority which our neighbours have acquired in Indian literature, we also may claim in a literature not less fruitful, and of still more certain antiquity. Without recalling here the immense labours of our missionaries, and the learned re searches Of the French Academicians, Fourmont and dc Guignes, we should at least mention the memoirs concerning the history, the sciences and the arts Of the Chinese, by the missionaries Of Pekin, in fifteen volumes, 4to, Of which the three last have appeared since 1789. Those who are acquaint ed with this collection, which is much more highly apprecia ted and much more in demand among foreign nations, than among Frenchmen, consider it as worthy of being placed by the side of the Asiatic researches.
