Chun Liu ambles into his shop and offers Jake a piece of Chinese heaven, a 13th Century oil on silk painting by Zheng Mengfu. While theres something oddly familiar about this Mr. Liu, its just not there. The scroll has all provenances and signatures and has been signed off by the experts but go figure, Jake discovers what he believes to be a fatal flaw in the scrolls authenticity. And so begins Jakes Chinese adventure chasing Dr. Liu through the poetic and uniquely Chinese cities of Taipei, Xiamen, Hangzhou, Shuzou and Shanghai. Jakes range of encounters run from Pentecostals, an accusation of murder, to his meeting his devilish jailer when a prisoner in the Korean War and a garlic eating Chinese cop who puts the kibosh to Jakes future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The food plants of an area provide the material basis for the survival of its population, and furnish inspiring stimuli for cultural development. There are two parts in this book. Part 1 introduces the cultural aspects of Chinese food plants and the spread of Chinese culinary culture to the world. It also describes how the botanical and cultural information was acquired; what plants have been selected by the Chinese people for food; how these foodstuffs are produced, preserved, and prepared; and what the western societies can learn from Chinese practices. Part 2 provides the botanical identification of the plant kingdom for the esculents used in China as food and/or as beverage. The plants are illustrated with line drawings or composite photographic plates. This book is useful not only as a text for general reading, but also as a work reference. Naturally, it would be a useful addition to the general collection of any library.

Download or read book Cat Tales Kitty Capers And More written by LaVera Edick and published by Book Venture Publishing LLC. This book was released on 2018-06-30 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cat Tales: Kitty Capers and More is a charming and heartwarming collection of stories, artwork, and personal reflections on pets and the positive effects they have on people’s lives. The first part of the book contains illustrations by the author and journal entries from a senior citizen named Ruth. Ruth chronicles the arrival of her diverse family of cats that she adopted—or did they adopt her? It all began when a half-starved stray cat came to Ruth’s door. Against her better judgment, she fed the cat and fell in love with not a “he” but a very pregnant “she,” whom she named Lady. Lady disappeared for a few days, returning with a tiny grey kitten, which she dropped at Ruth’s feet. A week later, she brought four more kittens—one day at a time. In Ruth’s words, “She must have been testing me to see if I would take good care of her first baby before she trusted me with the rest of her family.” The second section, Kitty Capers and More, starts with the many positive effects that pets have on a person’s health—both mental and physiological. The author includes compelling statistics such as pet ownership boosting oxytocin and lowering cortisol, which can reduce stress and ease pain. Love is the most important health attribute we have, and pets are one of nature’s best sources of love. Edick finishes with accounts of her own pets and those of her family and her friends, accompanied by artwork and photographs that tell the story of how pets have played an important role in her life, the lives of her children, grandchildren, great, and great-great grandchildren. Not just about cats, the book shares stories of special dogs, horses and even a pig named Leadbelly.
