This book was released on 2018-01-05 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chimera of Commercial Union With the Dominion of Canada The advocacy of the scheme of commercial union with Canada during the last two years has proceeded very much after the fashion of a fairy tale told to unsuspecting children. Fanciful collocations of fact and sentiment have been em ployed to construct visionary trade relationships, but so fragile and so loosely jointed is the airy castle that a breath of reason scatters it to the winds. Anything approaching a close analysis of the relations which actually exist between the United States and Canada, at once exposes an array of outrageous encroachments and of direct assaults upon American interests in progress to-day all along the interna tional boundary line, from the banks of Newfoundland to Vancouver Island. Such encroachments and aggressions constitute an insuperable obstacle to a financial partnership involving the customs revenues of the two countries. I propose here to advert to certain of the larger and more clearly defined of these acts of aggression on the part of the Dominion Government. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focused on the more practical level, volume 2 seeks to understand the work dignity may do as a foundation for law, how it is related to religious liberty, and how we should adjudicate religious liberty disputes at the individual and corporate level. What is the sphere of human dignity that the law should be trying to protect? Is the role of dignity helpful as a foundational legal concept, and if so, how exactly? What is the status of religious liberty as a component of human dignity, and how is it to be balanced with other individual rights, such as freedom of expression? And finally, to what extent can the law adjudicate corporate religious claims?

Book A New Look at Canadian Indian Policy

Download or read book A New Look at Canadian Indian Policy written by Gordon Gibson and published by The Fraser Institute. This book was released on 2009 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between the individual and the collective has been the major force in human life from time immemorial but the character of that relationship has evolved over time. In one dark corner of this long drama, a special case of the relationship between individual and collective has been playing out in Canada in the lives of Native Indians. In this particular corner, the collective assumes an importance unthinkable in the mainstream. Indian policy, imposed by the mainstream on some Canadians - "Indians" - has built for them a world that is both a fortress and a prison. The effects on the individuals within that system have been profound.

Book The Globalization Paradox

Download or read book The Globalization Paradox written by Dani Rodrik and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2012-05-17 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a century, economists have driven forward the cause of globalization in financial institutions, labour markets, and trade. Yet there have been consistent warning signs that a global economy and free trade might not always be advantageous. Where are the pressure points? What could be done about them? Dani Rodrik examines the back-story from its seventeenth-century origins through the milestones of the gold standard, the Bretton Woods Agreement, and the Washington Consensus, to the present day. Although economic globalization has enabled unprecedented levels of prosperity in advanced countries and has been a boon to hundreds of millions of poor workers in China and elsewhere in Asia, it is a concept that rests on shaky pillars, he contends. Its long-term sustainability is not a given. The heart of Rodrik’s argument is a fundamental 'trilemma': that we cannot simultaneously pursue democracy, national self-determination, and economic globalization. Give too much power to governments, and you have protectionism. Give markets too much freedom, and you have an unstable world economy with little social and political support from those it is supposed to help. Rodrik argues for smart globalization, not maximum globalization.
