Book David Copperfield s History of Magic

Download or read book David Copperfield s History of Magic written by David Copperfield and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-10-26 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this personal journey through a unique performing art, David Copperfield profiles some of the world's most groundbreaking magicians. From the sixteenth-century magistrate who wrote an early book on conjuring, to the roaring twenties and the man who fooled Houdini, to the woman who levitated, vanished, and caught bullets in her bare hands, David Copperfield's History of Magic takes you on a wild journey through the remarkable feats of some of the greatest magicians in history. The result is a sweeping tale that reveals how these astonishing performers were outsiders who used magic to escape class, challenge conventions, transform popular culture, explore the innermost workings of the human mind, and inspire scientific discovery. Their incredible stories are complemented by more than 100 never-before-seen photographs of artifacts from Copperfield's exclusive Museum of Magic, including a sixteenth-century manual on sleight-of-hand; Houdini's straitjackets, handcuffs, and water torture chamber; Dante's famous sawing-in-half apparatus; Alexander's high-tech turban that allowed him to read people's minds; and even some coins that may have magically passed through the hands of Abraham Lincoln. By the end of the book, you'll be sure to share Copperfield's passion for the power of magic. --

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Childhood of David Copperfield: The Early Chapters of the Author's Novel, With an Introduction and Notes One may arrange a part of Dickens's work for a special kind of readers with a very good conscience, for Dickens himself set an example in the arrangements he made for his own public readings. There is, however, not much arrangement made here of the part of David Copperfield presented, beyond the omission of chapters I. and IV. A few other passages have been omitted, usually because they have such reference to later parts of the story as would make them puzzling to one who was only reading the beginning. In the Introduction I have not presented any helps to study, but have contented myself with doing something to give the reading of the story a little more meaning. It is possible that the third part of the Introduction may be somewhat advanced for the pupils into whose hands this book may come. It is meant more especially for teachers, and will, perhaps, give them some help in the comments they may make on the readings in class. But even if it is advanced for some pupils it will do them no harm to read it It is rarely harmful to try to understand something written for people a little older than oneself. Book excerpt: Hugely admired by Tolstoy, David Copperfield is the novel that draws most closely from Charles Dickens's own life. Its eponymous hero, orphaned as a boy, grows up to discover love and happiness, heartbreak and sorrow amid a cast of eccentrics, innocents, and villains. Praising Dickens's power of invention, Somerset Maugham wrote: "There were never such people as the Micawbers, Peggotty and Barkis, Traddles, Betsey Trotwood and Mr. Dick, Uriah Heep and his mother. They are fantastic inventions of Dickens's exultant imagination...you can never quite forget them." This Modern Library Paperback Classics edition includes a new Introduction by Pulitzer Prize finalist David Gates, in addition to new explanatory notes.

Download or read book David Copperfield with an Introduction by Edwin Percy Whipple written by Charles Dickens and published by Digireads.com. This book was released on 2017-01-27 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The captivating story of an innocent boy alone in an uncaring society, David Copperfield is unquestionably the most autobiographical of all Charles Dickens's novels. Born in bleak 19th-century London, David Copperfield's life is shaped by his struggle for survival, starting with his menacing stepfather, Mr. Murdstone. His friendship with the blustering, jovial Mr. Micawber adds hilarity and warmth to his otherwise dismal days, while the sinister, sniveling clerk Uriah Heep is an endless source of both amusement and revulsion. As David grows up, he is torn between his fascination with the beautiful, spoiled Dora and his devotion to his childhood friend Agnes. An unforgettable portrayal of childhood, David Copperfield's message of hope and determination amidst life's harsh realities makes this story one of Dickens's greatest masterpieces.

Science and technology developed rapidly and brought wealth and improvement into many sectors of life; inventions like the steam engine, power looms, the spinning jenny or the expansion of the road and rail network made life easier. But on the other hand it was also the time of great misery, exploitation and tremendous class differences between a very thin and very wealthy upper-class, a rising middle-class and a very broad and to a great extent extremely impoverished working-class. But how was it like being a working-class child in Victorian England? To answer this question this work will take a close look at two of the most famous contemporary novels dealing with the depiction of children: Charles Dickens’ ‘David Copperfield’ and ‘Oliver Twist’.
