Book excerpt: Growth is contagious and anyone in a company can make simple choices that will accelerate growth in any business. Mastering the powers of clarity, energy, and impact can propel any organization to new heights. If you want to initiate a culture of contagious growth in your company, read this book. Conventional wisdom has long defined "Chiefs" as rulers of people--those at the top of the organization chart who hold the most power. We've always viewed Chiefs as "special," selectively chosen to lead others. The perception in business and society is that only those at the top have the power to be Chief. Conventional wisdom got it wrong. And that needs to change. Now. The newly released Second Edition of Be Chief: It's a Choice, Not a Title obliterates the idea that only Chiefs with titles hold real power--a notion that's been holding us back from achieving our true potential. It's time to realize our true power. Be Chief shows us how. Be Chief isn't just for managers and executives--it's for anyone in any organization. Author Rick Miller has transformed organizations from startups to multinationals--helping front-line workers, managers, and executives at all levels achieve personal and professional growth and establish meaningful connections between what they do and who they are. The ability to tap the collective power of Chiefs at all levels holds the key to sustainable growth that today's companies demand and so many of us crave. According to survey after survey, a lack of engagement has enveloped today's workplace--at least seven in 10 workers are not giving 100% on the job. You may be one of them. It's time for a new way to think about where real power comes from, and to consider new tools to help leaders build organizations full of empowered Chiefs. Be Chief delivers the tips, tools, and case studies to do just that. Be Chief reveals the choices essential to achieving individual and organizational transformation and growth. Finally, 100% of author proceeds are donated to Easterseals, in support of their programs for veterans.

They are the best of the best, chosen for their superior skills in each discipline of warfare. And to lead his secret Highland Guard, Bruce chooses the greatest warrior of all. The ultimate Highland warlord and a swordsman without equal, Tor MacLeod has no intention of being drawn into Scotland’s war against the English. Dedicated to his clan, the fiercely independent chief answers to no one—especially not to his alluring new bride, bartered to him in a bid to secure his command of the deadliest fighting force the world has ever seen. The treacherous chit who made her way to Tor’s bed may have won his hand, but she will never claim his heart. Although her husband’s reputation is as fierce as his manner, Christina Fraser believes that something softer hides beneath his brutal shell. But the only warmth she feels is in their bed, in glorious moments of white-hot desire that disappear with the dawn. When Christina’s reckless bid to win her husband’s love goes awry and thrusts them into danger on the eve of war, Tor will face his ultimate battle: to save his wife and to open his heart—before it’s too late.

Download or read book Ask the Chief written by John F Leahy and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2012-10-11 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whenever sailors are confronted with 'unsolvable' problems--be it a fouled anchor or paint that won't dry--they often throw up their hands and exclaim, 'We'd better ask the Chief.' That refrain, heard for generations throughout the Navy, is the theme for Jack Leahy's newest book. Written at sea, his book provides a compelling picture of the Chief Petty Officer's community in the U.S. Navy. As a guest of the Chief Petty Officer's mess aboard USS George Washington during Operation Enduring Freedom, Leahy was granted complete and unfettered access to all areas of the massive carrier and the other ships in her battle group. He interviewed nearly one hundred Navy Chiefs from the aviation, surface, submarine, and special warfare communities and recounts their stories of daily life at sea. In doing so, he presents the true backbone of the modern Navy: the wisdom, character, and dignity of the Chief Petty Officer's community. This book of contemporaneous oral history follows the format that proved so successful with Leahy's earlier book on Navy boot camp. Color photographs help bring the story to life.

Download or read book Kaffir Folk Lore A Selection From The Traditional Tales Current Among The People Living On The Eastern Border of The Cape Colony With Copious Explanatory Notes written by Geo. Mc Call Theal and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of late years a great deal of interest has been taken in the folklore of uncivilized tribes by those who have made it their business to study mankind. It has been found that a knowledge of the traditionary tales of a people is a key to their ideas and a standard of their powers of thought. These stories display their imaginative faculties; they are guides to the nature of the religious belief, of the form of government, of the marriage customs, in short, of much that relates to both the inner and the outer life of those by whom they are told. These tales also show the relationship between tribes and peoples of different countries and even of different languages. They are evidences that the same ideas are common to every branch of the human family at the same stage of progress. On this account, it is now generally recognised that in order to obtain correct information concerning an uncivilized race, a knowledge of their folklore is necessary. Without this a survey is no more complete than, for instance, a description of the English people would be if no notice of English literature were taken. It is with a view of letting the people we have chosen to call Kaffirs describe themselves in their own words, that these stories have been collected and printed. They form only a small portion of the folklore that is extant among them, but it is believed that they have been so selected as to leave no distinguishing feature unrepresented. Though these traditionary tales are very generally known, there are of course some persons who can relate them much better than others. The best narrators are almost invariably ancient dames, and the time chosen for story telling is always the evening. This is perhaps not so much on account of the evening being the most convenient time, as because such tales as these have most effect when told to an assemblage gathered round a fire circle, when night has spread her mantle over the earth, and when the belief in the supernatural is stronger than it is by day. Hence it may easily happen that persons may mix much with Kaffirs without even suspecting that they have in their possession a rich fund of legendary lore.
