Book The Chief European Dramatists Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Chief European Dramatists Classic Reprint written by Brander Matthews and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 802 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chief European Dramatists It is in response to a wider and more intelligent interest in dramatic literature, and in the drama as an art, that the playwrights of every modern language now publish their plays promptly in order that these may be read both by those who have already witnessed the performance and by those deprived of this pleasure by remoteness from the playhouse. Preceding and accompanying this interest in the drama of the immediate present there is also a constantly increasing attention to the drama of the past, and more especially to the dramatic literature of the English language. Professor Neilson has made a selection of the most important tragedies and comedies of the dramatists who were Shakespeare's contemporaries under Queen Elizabeth and his successors under King James; and Professor Baker is preparing a corresponding collection chosen from out the works of the Restoration dramatists. In Professor Dickinson's volume, the Chief Contemporary Dramatists, there is ample representation of the foremost British and American playmakers at the beginning of the twentieth century. Hitherto, however, no adequate attempt has been made to select, out of the drama of the remoter past and out of the drama of other tongues than English, a group of plays, tragic and comic, which might illustrate and illuminate the development of dramatic literature from the Greek of the fifth century B.C. to the Scandinavian of the end of the nineteenth century A.D. This is the difficult task which has been undertaken by the editor of this volume. It has been his duty to ascertain who, among the scores and the hundreds of playwrights that have flourished in the different countries of Europe during the past twenty-four centuries, were entitled to be recognized as acknowledged masters of the art of the drama or as indisputable representatives of their race and of their era. This selection has proved to be a matter of unexpected delicacy; and the editor cannot hope that the scholars, into whose hands this volume may come, will all of them agree with his choice or accept the principles upon which it has been guided. Yet, when every allowance has been made, it ought to be admitted that any selection like this must inevitably be affected by the personal equation of the editor, from which he cannot free himself, however much he may struggle. And this editor confesses frankly that if he could have had his own way, disregarding the necessary limitation of a single volume, he would have been glad to include the most amusing medieval Pierre Pathelin of an unknown Frenchman and a corresponding German farce by Hans Sachs. He would have hesitated long before deciding upon the exclusion of Seneca, of Grillparzer and Freytag, of Alfred de Musset and the elder Dumas. It was to him a personal grief that his conscience compelled him to leave out Kotzebue and Scribe, playwrights rather than dramatists, master technicians who made the path straight for artists of a richer endowment and of a more significant message. Even after the list of dramatists had been drawn up, there remained the almost equally difficult duty of deciding upon the single play which should best represent the total achievement of each of them. Book The Chief European Dramatists

Download or read book The Chief European Dramatists written by Brander Matthews and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 794 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chief European Dramatists: Twenty One Plays From the Drama of Greece, Rome, Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Denmark, and Norway; From 500 B. C. To 1879 A. D.; Selected and Edited With Notes, Biographies, and Bibliographies A collection of masterpieces of the drama extending over a score of centuries servu ti make plain something which ought never to be overlooked. The principles of dramafi art are unchanging through the ages, the same to-day in Paris or in New York that the: were in Athens twenty-four hundred years ago. They are to be deduced from the trag dies of Sophocles as clearly as from the tragedies of Shakespeare, from the comedim II Moliere as obviously as from the comedies of leasing and Goldoni and Augier; and the are all the result of the fact that a dramatist always composes his plays with the deair and the intent that they shall be performed by actors in a theater and before an and ence. He takes thought of the performers of his own time and city; and Sopho an Moliere, while they were creating characters for the appreciation of posterity, were ale preparing parts for contemporary performers in whom they had confidence. He adjust the stories he tells on the stage to the physical conditions of the only playhouse wit which he is familiar. And he feels constrained always to choose the kind of story whio will arouse and retain the interests of his contemporaries in his own country, giving n thought to the possible likings of any other audience either abroad or in the future. Book Chief Contemporary Dramatists Second Series

Download or read book Chief Contemporary Dramatists Second Series written by Thomas Herbert Dickinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 742 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chief Contemporary Dramatists, Second Series: Eighteen Plays From the Recent Drama of England, Ireland, America, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, Russia, and Scandinavia Comparing the plays in this volume with those which constituted the first series of Chief Contemporary Dramatists, some interesting tendencies in the theater of the western world are disclosed. While the thesis or problem play, derived from France and enforced by Ibsen, was predominant in the eighteen-nineties and the earlier years of the new cen tury, the form disappears as the century approaches its second decade. The present volume contains no single distinct exemplar of this type of play. The result of the freeing of the play from the necessity of being socially serviceable has been greatly to enrich the theater with new interests both in structure and content, and to call into the craft of play making men from arts outside the theater. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plays, Vol. 1: By Greek, Spanish, French, German and English Dramatists; With a Special Introduction If we consider Moliere's object in all me numerous plays that emanated from his fertile genius we perceive a constant warfare against vice and folly. And no dramatic author, ancient or modern, launched the shafts of satire against such a variety of vanities and foibles. The Misanthrope is considered by most critics to be Moliere's masterpiece. It has even been character ized as the ideal of classic comedy, comprising, as it does, such immortal types as Alceste, the impatient but far from cynical hero; Célimene, the coquette; Oronte, the fop; Eliante. The rea sonable woman; and Arsinoe, the mischief maker. Moliere is, in the estimation of many critics, the most consummate comic dramatist of modern times. It is in the combination of char acter with intrigue that his genius and creative powers are seen to the greatest advantage. His plays scintillate with wit and abound in humor and frolicsome fun. They are also remarkable for their accurate character-drawing and their astonishing repro duction of humanity at large. Racine began to write when the classical fetters were riveted upon the French stage, and he never made the effort of strug gling with his chains. He was as much of a poet as the prev alcnt taste for artificial forms would permit. He excelled in re finement and harmony of versification, and in delineating the passion of love with truth, suavity, and charm. In Phedra he does not attempt the highest poetry, but the jealous frenzy of the heroine is acknowledged to be a great achievement in pure passion. The play, as a whole, is considered one of the most finished productions of the French drama. It is especially noted for excellence of construction, and artful beauty of verse. Book Goethe in English

Download or read book Goethe in English written by Derek Glass and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2005 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bibliography was commissioned by the English Goethe Society as a contribution to the celebration in 1999 of the 250th anniversary of Goethes birth. It sets out to record translations of his works into English that have been published in the twentieth century, up to and including material published in that anniversary year. It aims to serve as wide a constituency as possible, be it as a simple reference tool for tracing a translation of a given work or as a documentary source for specialized studies of Goethe reception in the English-speaking world. The work records publications during the century, not merely translations that originated during this period. It includes numerous reprintings of older material, as well as some belated first publications of translations from the nineteenth century. It shows how frequent and how long enduring was the recourse of publishers and anthologists to a Goethe Victorian in diction, a signal factor in perceptions and misperceptions. Derek Glass was putting the finishing touches to the bibliography at the time of his sudden death in March 2004. Colleagues at Kings College London have edited the final manuscript, which is now published jointly by the English Goethe Society and the Modern Humanities Research Association both as a worthy commemoration of Goethes anniversary and as a tribute to Derek himself.
