Book Spenser the School of the Fletchers and Milton Classic Reprint

Download or read book Spenser the School of the Fletchers and Milton Classic Reprint written by Herbert Ellsworth Cory and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-03 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spenser, the School of the Fletchers, and Milton But the boy Milton took some of his Spenser second-hand from contemporary Spenserians who, for the moment, loomed large because they were in the foreground. The juvenilia of great poets are almost always tinged with the intermediary in uence of the poetae minimi of the day who echo their masters with facile prettiness. So Keats, in his early work, took some of his Spenser with sugar and water from Hunt. By 1627 the names of Giles and Phineas Fletcher must have been prominent at Milton's own university, Cambridge, where he was a novitiate in poetry for seven years. The Fletchers seized upon subjects which were in the air. In an age of religious poetry they wrote quaintly and often beautifully, in ingenious and eccentric allegory, of the life of Christ and of the soul of man. They borrowed reverently, but with naive freedom, from the riches of The Faerie Queene, which they ransacked from end to end for allegorical figures, memorable lines, sometimes nearly whole stanzas. Over all they embroidered the curious, stifi conceits that were everywhere high in favor. They were enthusiastic imitators of the Spenserian stanza. As Spenser had given new music to the eight-line stanza by the addition of a final alex andrine, so the Fletchers experimented by adding the long line to the rhyme-royal, the ottava rima, and many other current from Spenser. I do not wish to defend them individually but to make a brief specimen list for the sake of general impressions. Book excerpt: The book begins with a brief prefatory discussion of its relation to structuralist and post-structuralist criticism. The first chapter, `Apocryphal Voices', surveys the basis of modern critical approaches to persona and `irony' in Chaucer's poetry, and suggests that such approaches are better suited to unequivocally written contexts. A systematic hesitation between a wholly written and a wholly spoken context requires critical distinctions between types of persona, and a number of distinctions in the range between persona and voice. `Morality in its Context' examines the Pardoner and his tale and argues against a `dramatic' view of the tale itself, while the third chapter, 'Chaucer's Development of Persona', is a study of possible sources for Chaucer's handling of the narratorial '1', looking at the English `disour', the French `dits amoureux', Italian and Latin sources of influence, and the Roman de la Rose. The last two chapters apply the principles outlined so far to Troilus and The Canterbury Tales, with a particular examination of the literary history of the Squire'stale to show that modern interest in dramatic persona has obscured many other important issues and leads to drastic misreading. This is a challenging and lucid work which questions many of the received attitudes of recentChaucer criticism, and offers a reasoned and approachable alternative view.

Book A Commentary on the Poetry of Chaucer Spenser Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Commentary on the Poetry of Chaucer Spenser Classic Reprint written by Adolphus Alfred Jack and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary on the Poetry of Chaucer Spenser This book has come together somewhat occasionally. Originally conceived as two of several essays designed to consider some of our older poets from the standpoint of modern interest, it has finally taken the shape of a detailed critical account of Chaucer and Spenser. The explanation is that while the essays were still incomplete, I was asked to deliver, in the Session 1914 1915, the Clark Lectures in Trinity College, Cambridge, and, as I was then busy with those two poets, I chose them as my subject. Literary essays and class-room comment are different things, and to turn my material into lectures during the stress of the National preoccupation was not easy. Nevertheless, doing what I could, I found myself as of course hastily altering, both by omission and addition, and in the upshot, I am afraid, deferring the interests of the general reader to those of the student. And now when later I have tried again to recast in more literary form, I am not sure that I have ended by satisfying either party.
