Download or read book Theological Dicitonary of the Old Testament written by G. Johannes Botterweck and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1974-12-06 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multivolume work is still proving to be as fundamental to Old Testament studies as its companion set, the Kittel-Friedrich Theological Dictionary of the New Testament, has been to New Testament studies. Beginning with father, and continuing through the alphabet, the TDOT volumes present in-depth discussions of the key Hebrew and Aramaic words in the Old Testament. Leading scholars of various religious traditions (including Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Reformed, Anglican, Greek Orthodox, and Jewish) and from many parts of the world (Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States) have been carefully selected for each article by editors Botterweck, Ringgren, and Fabry and their consultants, George W. Anderson, Henri Cazelles, David Noel Freedman, Shemaryahu Talmon, and Gerhard Wallis. The intention of the writers is to concentrate on meaning, starting from the more general, everyday senses and building to an understanding of theologically significant concepts. To avoid artificially restricting the focus of the articles, TDOT considers under each keyword the larger groups of words that are related linguistically or semantically. The lexical work includes detailed surveys of a word s occurrences, not only in biblical material but also in other ancient Near Eastern writings. Sumerian, Akkadian, Egyptian, Ethiopic, Ugaritic, and Northwest Semitic sources are surveyed, among others, as well as the Qumran texts and the Septuagint; and in cultures where no cognate word exists, the authors often consider cognate ideas. TDOT s emphasis, though, is on Hebrew terminology and on biblical usage. The contributors employ philology as well as form-critical and traditio-historical methods, with the aim of understanding the religious statements in the Old Testament. Extensive bibliographical information adds to the value of this reference work. This English edition attempts to serve the needs of Old Testament students without the linguistic background of more advanced scholars; it does so, however, without sacrificing the needs of the latter. Ancient scripts (Hebrew, Greek, etc.) are regularly transliterated in a readable way, and meanings of foreign words are given in many cases where the meanings might be obvious to advanced scholars. Where the Hebrew text versification differs from that of English Bibles, the English verse appears in parentheses. Such features will help all earnest students of the Bible to avail themselves of the manifold theological insights contained in this monumental work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered how we got here and why we are here? Do you believe that the universe and life on Earth came about through creation by a master designer, or do you still believe in the process of evolution? Do you know that God works through covenants? God has a covenant relationship with His creation. It is essential to know about covenants in order to understand Gods desire that we become more intimate with Him. Taken together, this study of covenants and creation provides compelling spiritual and scientific evidence that the universe was created exactly as described in the Bible. Many of the questions and arguments about creation and evolution are also covered in this book. We hope that it will enable you to make a more informed choice about what to believe, because what you believe has eternal consequences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEXT TIME YOURE DEAD, EXPECT BIG CHANGES IN THE AFTERLIFE AS THE UNDERWORLD GETS ITS FIRST FASHION MAKEOVER IN MILLENNIA For three months in late 2043 an expedition of eight people (most of them alive) entered the afterlife on a special assignment to come up with ways to improve it. They were commissioned by the Lord of Death himself, some call him Hades, and joined by a uniquely qualified spirit who knew that landscape well, the famous magus known as Merlin. It turns out hes served as the top Underworld guide to many cultures since death began, and he wrote The Tibetan Book of the Dead about how they do things there in the Bardo. Their job was to come up with ways to make death and the afterlife experience easier. Nothing there was working right anymore, nobody understood the place, people were getting lost and confused, complaints were mounting, and all this was slowing up Earths progress and the daytime life of living humans. The team included Blaise, a mysterious wisecracker who spends a lot of his timeoff-planet, mostly in the Pleiades; Edward, a sensible Boston book editor; Frederick, once a mythology professor but now a freelance Gnostic; Philomena, his wife who ascended into a Light body ten years earlier; Matthew, a reclusive meditator who consorts with Thunderbirds; Pipaluk, a very old shaman from Greenland; Tommy, teenager who died 20 years ago and now knows the Land of the Dead firsthand; and Merlin, explainer of Mysteries and everyones favorite afterlife guide. Nothing is exempt from their Bardo retrofit. No job is safe; no way of doing things is secure. Everything about the afterlife will change. Next time youre there, expect toremember more, stay awake longer, and not take all those strange spirits accosting you seriously. Who knows? You might even like it.

Book excerpt: 2-IN-1 THRILLER SET! At long last: the prequel to The Devil’s Advocate—packaged together with that original novel, which Al Pacino, Keanu Reaves, and Charlize Theron turned into a blockbuster movie. Revealing the story of how the law firm of John Milton & Associates came to be, this will change forever how you think of the original The Devil’s Advocate book and the major motion picture that made it a household name. When the promising young attorney of a prestigious law firm is found dead on the sidewalk twenty stories below his posh New York apartment, everyone rules it as a suicide. Everyone except Lieutenant Matthew Blake—a detective with a legendary track record and a notoriously unorthodox style. Blake sees something more nefarious in the attorney’s death, and he slowly uncovers a murder plot so twisted that it could only have been concocted by the devil himself. Coincidentally (or perhaps not) John Milton—a handsome, charming, and unflappable defense attorney—strolls into the grieving law firm with a mind to replace the unfortunate attorney. Little does the firm know that Milton’s plan extends far beyond just becoming a partner.

Download or read book Amos in Song and Book Culture written by Joyce Rilett Wood and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2002-04-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study argues that the gist and movement of the prophecy in the book of Amos can be attributed to Amos himself, who composed a coherent cycle of poetry. His dire predictions came after the Fall of Samaria but before the Fall of Jerusalem. Writing a century later, the author of the book preserved but updated Amos' text by fitting it into a developing literary, historical and prophetic tradition. Amos is used as a test case to show that prophecy originated in the performing arts but was later transformed into history and biography. The original prophecy is a song Amos recited at symposia or festivals. The book's interest focusses on the performer and his times.
