He witnessed the rapid advancement of industrial society, observed the struggles of Europe's Great Powers as a war reporter, and saw firsthand the cataclysmic events of the Great War while a soldier in the Italian army. Marinetti founded the Italian "Futurist" movement, which emphasized dynamism, speed, technology, youth, and violence, finding inspiration in the automobile, the airplane, and the industrial city, and aimed to liberate Italy from the weight of its past. Futurism's key figures were Marinetti himself, Umberto Boccioni, Carlo Carrà, Fortunato Depero, Gino Severini, Giacomo Balla, and Luigi Russolo. He would also gain some influence outside of Italy, notably with the Englishman Wyndham Lewis, whose "Vorticist" style drew heavily on Futurism. Marinetti found the world of the Great Powers, tied down by their immense histories, to be suffocating and moribund: like an open-air museum. He loved above all else the world of action and fire, machine-guns, cannons, and ironclad vessels. On this shared love of action, he drew close to Mussolini's Fascists, though this relationship was often troubled by Marinetti's criticism of what he perceived to be Fascism's reactionary tendencies. Originally published in 1933 as Il Fascino dell'Egitto, Marinetti's The Charm of Egypt is both a diary and an artistic rendering of his adventures among the Egyptian dunes. Marinetti paints the world as he saw it, through his unique Futurist perspective. His reflections on the land of his birth, and the changes wrought upon it by the forward march of technology, come together in this fascinating homage to that ancient and beautiful land. Wells, whose influence on this book is easy to notice. She practiced what she preached, so much so that despite her literary successes, her acts of charity brought her close to bankruptcy. These political beliefs are prominently displayed in the book. The children encounter memorable characters during their adventures, chief among them the Queen of Babylon, who causes quite a stir when she later pays them a call in their contemporary London. When the visiting Queen witnesses the squalid living conditions of the London working class, she’s amazed at how poorly they’re treated compared to the slaves of her own Babylon. Likewise, the utopian future—which features a wink to her friend H. G. Wells, the “great reformer”—is a striking contrast in terms of the happiness, care, and education of the general populace. The book’s legacy can be found in the works of other writers. Most notably, C. S. Lewis incorporated several elements in his Chronicles of Narnia: the Calormene civilization of The Horse and His Boy draws heavily from The Amulet’s Babylon, and the episode in The Magician’s Nephew where Jadis, the White Witch, causes chaos during her short stay in London is also a direct homage to the aforementioned visit from the Queen. The format of these stories, where a group of people take their audience on adventures through time and space to learn about distant cultures, is an uncanny precursor to the popular British TV series Doctor Who. The favour of the beings who were placable and friendly to man might be obtained by means of gifts and offerings, but the cessation of hostilities on the part of those that were implacable and unfriendly could only be obtained by wheedling, and cajolery, and flattery, or by making use of an amulet, or secret name, or magical formula, or figure, or picture which had the effect of bringing to the aid of the mortal who possessed it the power of a being that was mightier than the foe who threatened to do evil to him. The magic of most early nations aimed at causing the transference of power from a supernatural being to man, whereby he was to be enabled to obtain superhuman results and to become for a time as mighty as the original possessor of the power; but the object of Egyptian magic was to endow man with the means of compelling both friendly and hostile powers, nay, at a later time, even God Himself, to do what he wished, whether the were willing or not. The belief in magic, the word being used in its best sense, is older in Egypt than the belief in God, and it is certain that a very large number of the Egyptian religious ceremonies, which were performed in later times as an integral part of a highly spiritual worship, had their origin in superstitious customs which date from a period when God, under any name or in any form, was unconceived in the minds of the Egyptians. Indeed it is probable that even the use of the sign which represents an axe, and which stands the hieroglyphic character both for God and "god," indicates that this weapon and. tool was employed in the performance of some ceremony connected with religious magic in prehistoric, or at any rate in predynastic times, when it in some mysterious way symbolized the presence of a supreme Power. But be this as it may, it is quite certain that magic and religion developed and flourished side by side in Egypt throughout all periods of her history, and that any investigation which we may make of the one necessarily includes an examination of the other.
