Notwithstanding the fact that some diseases may run a long and fatal course without' fever, we will always find the careful physician taking the tempera ture of his patients often, and when he finds any considerable rise above the nor mal, some antipyretic is usually given. This practice may be, and I believe is, the proper one to pursue in most cases, the mis take we usually make, I think, is in the selection of an antipyretic. For provided this experiment is done under proper aseptic precautions, so as to insure freedom from the admixture of other germs, the injection of the micro-organisms themselves may scarcely give rise to any phenomena, but that of the uid will develop the symptoms of poisoning, and under certain conditions, which to -consider here would lead us too far astray, give rise to the disease of tetanus. I removed several large pieces of the skull that were driven through the dura-mater, necessitating a few sutures in the much lacerated membrane. There was consider able oozing from the dura-mater, and fear ing that it would trickle down between the membrane and the skull I placed gauze drainage over the raw surface before bring ing the aps together. There was a free discharge for sixty hours of bloody serum. The drainage was removed; union by first intention; recovery complete in three weeks.
