Book Towards the Emancipation of Patients

Download or read book Towards the Emancipation of Patients written by Charlotte Williamson and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite a policy focus on involving patients in health care and increasing patient autonomy, much covert coercion of patients takes place in everyday healthcare. This book, by a leading patient activist, examines for the first time how the patient movement, which works to improve the quality of healthcare, can actually be considered an emancipation movement when led by its radical elements. In this highly original book the author argues that radical patient groups and individual activists who repeatedly challenge or oppose some standards in healthcare, can be seen as working in the direction of freeing patients from coercion and from its associated injustice and inequality. Combining new academic theory with rich empirical evidence, the book explains how looking at healthcare from an emancipatory perspective could improve its quality as patients experience it. It will appeal to health professionals, managers, patient activists, policy makers and others concerned with the quality of healthcare.

Book excerpt: The Caraleigh neighborhood in south Raleigh was founded in 1892 with the opening of a cotton mill, fertilizer plant and workers' town. The old textile complex, with its "immense" brick structures continue to evoke a strong impression of a bygone period. The old mill remains the community's focal point as of 2022, leading some to worry that Caraleigh's modernized structure may conceal dark secrets. After the Civil War, cotton mills were at the heart of the South's frenzied pursuit of economic and psychological regeneration between 1880 and 1915. As Raleigh's greatest textile venture, Caraleigh itself was founded by a group of cotton investors. The origins of Raleigh's north-south divide can be seen in the many economic, psychological, social and political perils. While the Downtown South project promises a bright future for Raleigh in 2022, a close examination of the city's economic and social stratification in the past reveals the city's inequality, resulting in an affluent north Raleigh and a pauperized "south Raleigh ghetto." This work illuminates previously unrecognized aspects of Raleigh's history, such as how an outskirts neighborhood shaped the city's development during the twentieth century.

Book Bridging the Know Do Gap

Download or read book Bridging the Know Do Gap written by Gabriele Bammer and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2010-08-01 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's children are tomorrow's citizens. Good health and well-being in the early years are the foundations for well-adjusted and productive adult lives and a thriving society. But children are being let down in Australia and elsewhere by the lack of knowledge transfer between the worlds of research, policy and practice. Improving such transfer is the job of knowledge brokers - the various ways they can operate are explored in this book through case examples and the lessons learned from experienced proponents. The book concludes by posing three sets of ideas to shape the future of knowledge brokering.

Book Medicine at the Courts of Europe

Download or read book Medicine at the Courts of Europe written by Vivian Nutton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-18 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1990, Medicine at the Courts of Europe 1500-1837 is a collection of essays examining the whole range of medical activities in a variety of European courts, from Rome of the Borgias to the Russia of Catherine the Great. It documents the diverse influences of custom, wealth, religion and royal intervention, along with foreign innovation, popular literary satire and matters of litigation which so changed the face of court medicine over three centuries. By looking at court medical practitioners in such a wide chronological, geographic and thematic context, these essays provide many new insights for all those interested in the history of medicine, society and politics from the sixteenth century to the early nineteenth century.
