Book The Charge Asymmetry in W Bosons Produced in P Anti p Collisions at Center of Mass Energy 1 96 TeV

Download or read book The Charge Asymmetry in W Bosons Produced in P Anti p Collisions at Center of Mass Energy 1 96 TeV written by Julie M. Torborg and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary mode of production of W{sup +} bosons in a p{bar p} collider is u + {bar d} {yields} W{sup +}. The u quark generally carries more momentum than the {bar d} and the resultant W{sup +} tends to be boosted in the proton direction. Similarly, W bosons are boosted in the anti-proton direction. This is observed as an asymmetry in the rapidity distributions of positive and negative W bosons. Measurement of this asymmetry serves as a probe of the momentum distribution of partons within the proton. These distributions are required as input to the calculation of every p{bar p} production cross section. This thesis presents the first measurement at D0 of the charge asymmetry of the W boson production cross section as measured in W {yields} ev decays in 0.3 fb{sup -1} of p{bar p} collisions collected with the D0 Detector. Theoretical predictions made using the CTEQ6.1M and MRST(2004) parton distribution functions are compared with the measurement.

This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present a measurement of the W boson production charge asymmetry in p$ar{p}$→W+X→e?+X events at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV, using 9.7 fb-1 of integrated luminosity collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The neutrino longitudinal momentum is determined by using a neutrino weighting method, and the asymmetry is measured as a function of the W boson rapidity. The measurement extends over wider electron pseudorapidity region than previous results and is the most precise to date, allowing for precise determination of proton parton distribution functions in global fits.

Book Search for the Production of the Standard Model Z Boson in Association with W Boson in P Anti p Collisions at 1 96 TeV Center of Mass Energy

This book was released on 2010 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The search for the production of the Standard Model Z boson in association with a W boson is motivated and discussed. This is performed using 4.3 fb−1 of Tevatron Run II data collected with the CDF detector in (square root)s = 1.96 TeV proton anti-proton collisions. This is a signature-based analysis where the W boson decays semileptonically into a high-P{sub T} electron or muon plus a neutrino, and where the Z boson decays into two b quark jets (b-jets). We increase the signal-to-background ratio by identifying the b-quarks in the jets with a new neural network-based algorithm. Another neural network then uses kinematic information to distinguish WZ to further increase the signal-to-background ratio. Since our sensitivity is still not enough to achieve an observation, we set a 95% Confidence Level upper limit on the product of the WZ production cross section and its branching fraction to the decay products specified above, and express it as a ratio to the theoretical Standard Model prediction. The resulting limit is 3.9 x SM (3.9 x SM expected).

Book Search for New Heavy Charged Bosons and Measurement of High Mass Drell Yan Production in Proton Proton Collisions

Download or read book Search for New Heavy Charged Bosons and Measurement of High Mass Drell Yan Production in Proton Proton Collisions written by Markus Zinser and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents two analyses, the first of which involves the search for a new heavy charged gauge boson, a so-called W' boson. This new gauge boson is predicted by some theories extending the Standard Model gauge group to solve some of its conceptual problems. Decays of the W' boson in final states with a lepton (l± = e± , μ±) and the corresponding (anti-)neutrino are considered. Data collected by the ATLAS experiment in 2015 at a center of mass energy of √s =13 TeV is used for the analysis. In turn, the second analysis presents a measurement of the double-differential cross section of the process pp->Z/gamma^* + X -> l^+l^- + X, including a gamma gamma induced contribution, at a center of mass energy of sqrt{s} = 8 TeV. The measurement is performed in an invariant mass region of 116 GeV to 1500 GeV as a function of invariant mass and absolute rapidity of the l^+l^-- pair, and as a function of invariant mass and pseudorapidity separation of the l^+l^-- pair. The data analyzed was recorded by the ATLAS experiment in 2012 and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 20.3/fb. It is expected that the measured cross sections are sensitive to the PDFs at very high values of the Bjorken-x scaling variable, and to the photon structure of the proton.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation presents a measurement of \ssWW production in proton-proton collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider using the ATLAS detector. The $W$ bosons are required to decay leptonically, giving a signature of two leptons of the same electric charge, two jets, and missing transverse energy. The analysis is performed on the entire 8 TeV dataset, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb$^{-1}$. The cross section is measured in two fiducial regions, and an excess over the background-only prediction is observed with a significance of 4.5$\sigma$ for inclusive \ssWW production and 3.6$\sigma$ for electroweak \ssWW production. The measured cross sections are in agreement with Standard Model predictions, and limits are set on anomalous quartic gauge couplings.

Book Measurement of the Muon Charge Asymmetry in Inclusive W Boson Production at 7 TeV with CMS Detector

This book was released on 2014 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes a precise measurement of the muon charge asymmetry in inclusive pp [RIGHTWARDS ARROW] W + X production at the center of mass energy of s = 7 TeV of colliding protons. The data sample was collected with the Compact Muon Solenoid detector at the Large Hadron Collider and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb[-]1 . The measurement was performed in 11 bins of the muon pseudorapidity within [eta] 2.4 range and for two thresholds on its transverse momentum: pT 25 GeV and pT> 35 GeV. Precise measurement of the muon charge asymmetry provides an important test for the Standard Model physics. Thanks to the large data sample, containing more than 20 million W [RIGHTWARDS ARROW] [MICRO SIGN][nu] events, statistical precision is greatly improved compared with the previous lepton charge asymmetry results at the LHC. Total absolute uncertainty on the charge asymmetry varies within 0.2% [-] 0.4% in different muon pseudorapidity bins. The result provides significant constraints on the parton distribution functions of the proton in the Bjorken-x range from 0.001 to 0.1.

Book A Study of W Boson Decay Charge Asymmetry Using Hadronic Tau Decays in Proton Anti proton Collisions at u221A s

Download or read book A Study of W Boson Decay Charge Asymmetry Using Hadronic Tau Decays in Proton Anti proton Collisions at u221A s written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation presents a measurement of the tau charge asymmetry in events where the taus are produced by W decays. This charge asymmetry appears as different rapidity distributions for positive and negative taus. Two competing effects generate tau charge asymmetry. The production mechanism for the W gauge boson generates a charge asymmetry which is a function of the ratio of parton distribution functions, d(x)=u(x), measured at x ̃MW/√s. This is the dominant effect for tau charge asymmetry at small rapidity. At higher rapidity, however, the competing charge asymmetry from parity violation in W decay to taus becomes dominant. This tau asymmetry measurement is consistent with the Standard Model with a x2 per degree of freedom equal to 2.5 for 4 degrees of freedom when the asymmetry measurement is folded about y = 0, taking advantage of the CP symmetry of the underlying physics, and 8.9 for 8 degrees of freedom when it is not. This measurement introduces some methods and variables of interest to future analyses using hadronic decay modes of taus. This work was done using the CDF detector in $ar{p}$p collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV at Fermilab's Tevatron accelerator.
