Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chaplain, Vol. 29: Summer Quarter, 1972 The first hypothesis, that the position of the chaplain does lead to a conflict in roles for the incumbent of that position is supported in two ways: (1) by a philosophical analysis of the two social roles of clergymen and military officer and (2) by the responses to questions dealing with rank and those dealing with the relationship between reli gion and war. The second hypothesis, that the chaplain seeks to reconcile his role conflict either through rationalization or through compartmentalization of role behaviors, appears to be well substantiated. Concerning the third hypothesis, that rationalization of conflict in roles tends to strengthen the chaplain's role of military officer at the expense of his role of minister of thegospel, it needs only to be pointed out that every argument cited tends to assert the military claim and de-emphasize the religious claim. Book excerpt: The Sword of the Lord is the first book to examine military chaplains and the development of the military chaplaincy across history and geography - from the first to the twenty-first century, from Europe to North America. The scope of this work reveals the astonishing fact that the military chaplaincy has existed in a recognizable form for more than 1600 years. Contributors analyze specific historical moments in the development of the chaplaincy, beginning in antiquity and progressing through the Crusades, the English Civil War, the American Civil War, both World Wars, and the Vietnam War.
