Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chaplain, Vol. 18: A Journal for Protestant Chaplains; October, 1961 It is kind of important to know what we would preach on in a last sermon. Because it should be the expression Of what means most to us right now. Our last sermon is our continuing and continued ser mon. It is our always sermon. It is a good idea to know now what it really is, for our own sake and that of our hearers, and for God's sake, too. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chaplain, Vol. 18 One day, following a presentation of the Passion Play of Oberammergau, a group of tourists wandered backstage to take some pictures of the cast and the sets. One strong man tried to lift the cross to his shoulder, but found it too heavy. Turning to Anton Lang who played the part of Christ in the play, he said: "Why don't you carry a lighter cross? No one would know the difference." Lang replied: "I could not take the part of Christ without feeling the weight of his cross." Such has always been the spirit of true discipleship. Jesus said, "If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me." Christianity meant literally that to the early Christians. It meant broken friendship, financial failure, painful persecution, physical danger, and personal sacrifice. It meant forsaking father, mother, sisters, brothers, husband, wife, children, and old friends in order to follow Christ. In contrast to this rugged sort of discipleship, think of the modern inclination to make Christianity as easy and attractive as possible. Modern preachers play up the rewards of Christianity rather than the requirements. They present Christianity as a way to find "peace of mind," "to win friends and influence people," to achieve success in business, and cultivate one's taste for the refinements of life. They play down what one must believe, go without, give, and do in order to be a Christian. In short, Christianity is offered as a bargain to get rather than as a vital cause to support. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An approachable overview of the nature, purpose, and functional roles of chaplaincy Chaplaincy is unlike any other kind of ministry. It involves working outside a church, without a congregation, usually in a secular organization. It requires ministering to those with starkly different religious convictions, many of whom may never enter a house of worship. It is, as Alan Baker writes, “ministry in motion.” Those who are embarking upon this unique and specialized call deserve equally unique and specialized guidance, and Foundations of Chaplaincy offers exactly that. Baker surveys the biblical and theological foundations of chaplaincy before enumerating four specific responsibilities and skills that define chaplaincy’s “ministry of presence”: providing, facilitating, caring, and advising. Baker’s thorough guidance on these matters is supplemented in sidebars with practical advice and anecdotes from over thirty chaplains currently serving in a variety of settings and organizations. Chaplains who serve in healthcare, the military, correctional institutions, police and fire departments, sports teams, college campuses, and corporations have essential roles to play in their respective organizations, but theirs is rarely an easy calling. With Foundations of Chaplaincy as an introduction and an ongoing reference, those called to this important vocation may be assured of having the tools they need to cultivate a strong, mission-driven pastoral identity rooted in their own theological tradition while simultaneously participating in a multi-faith team.
