This book was released on 1994-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The West European banking industry has been facing many problems since 1990. The symptoms to be found everywhere are intensifying competition, narrow margins, falling profits and frantic efforts to meet the new capital adequacy requirements. The problems have been most acute in those countries, particularly in Scandinavia, where recent and rapid deregulation has taken place, but the need to cut costs, to reduce the scope of operations by selling subsidiaries and to shrink the balance sheet by securitising loans has been felt in all countries. In this volume European banking academics deal with competition, organisation and strategy, regulation and crises, and securities markets and financial centres.

Book The Changing Face of American Banking

Download or read book The Changing Face of American Banking written by Ranajoy Ray Chaudhuri and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-15 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With almost 6,300 commercial banks, significantly more than in any other country, the world of US banking is unique, fascinating, and always in flux. Two principal pieces of legislation have shaped the banking structure in this country: The McFadden Act of 1927, which prohibited banks from branching into other states, and The Glass-Steagall Act of 1933, which separated commercial and investment banking activities. The repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act in 1999 was one of the main contributing factors behind the global financial crisis of 2008. This measure resulted in the passage of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010, which once again prohibited commercial banks from making certain types of speculative investments. The Changing Face of American Banking analyzes the impact of both these acts - as well as that of their subsequent repeal - in depth, examining the real effects of government regulations on the US commercial banking sector. Ray Chaudhuri pinpoints the evolving nature of US commercial banks and banking regulations and explores their impact on the economy. Instead of just focusing on banks and regulations, this work considers the correlations and causality between banking performance and economic growth and productivity. It also brings the banking literature up to date with the 2008-2009 financial crisis and its aftermath, including the passage of the Dodd-Frank Act of 2010 and its effect on American banking.

Book Modern Banking

Download or read book Modern Banking written by Shelagh Heffernan and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2005-05-05 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Banking focuses on the theory and practice of banking, and its prospects in the new millennium. The book is written for courses in banking and finance at Masters/MBA level, or undergraduate degrees specialising in this area. Bank practitioners wishing to deepen and broaden their understanding of banking issues may also be attracted to this book. While they often have exceptional and detailed knowledge of the areas they have worked in, busy bankers may be all too unaware of the key broader issues. Consider the fundamental questions: What is unique about a bank? and What differentiates it from other financial institutions? Answering these questions begins to show how banks should evolve and adapt - or fail. If bankers know the underlying reasons for why profitable banks exist, it will help them to devise strategies for sustained growth. Modern Banking concludes with a set of case studies that give practical insight into the key issues covered in the book: The core banking functions Different types of banks and diversification of bank activities Risk management: issues and techniques Global regulation: Basel 1 and Basel 2. Bank regulation in the UK, US, EU, and Japan Banking in emerging markets Bank failure and financial crises Competitive issues, from cost efficiency to mergers and acquisitions Case Studies including: Goldman Sachs, Bankers Trust/Deutsche Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui, Bancomer

Book Strategy and Organization of Corporate Banking

Download or read book Strategy and Organization of Corporate Banking written by Giacomo de Laurentis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-09-12 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reinhard H. Schmidt The impressive development of the finance literature with its emphasis on asset pricing and the formal modeling of incentive systems during the past three decades, has largely relegated the business and operational aspects of banking as an industry from the agenda of academic research. Though this is understandable, it is especially regrettable in view of the dynamic dev- opments in the banking industry which have started about a decade ago and are currently in full swing. Fortunately, there are now signs of a change to the effect that banking is back on the research agenda. The p- sent book by Professor De Laurentis and his co-authors is a highly inno- tive and interesting manifestation of this reorientation. Banking is an important part of any financial system, and it is especially important in the financial systems of the countries of Continental Europe, such as Italy, France, and Germany, which have been bank-based for d- ades and which are, in my view, likely to remain bank-based for the fo- seeable future. There are many reasons, based on empirical and theoretical considerations, to believe that strong banks are not only important for the banking industry itself, but also for the respective national economies.

Download or read book The Changing Face of Compliance written by Sharon Ward and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the current business climate the impact of the volume and nature of regulatory change and the regulatory risk arising from this is a significant business risk for regulated firms and regulators alike. As a consequence, management of this risk is increasingly high on the board agenda of regulated firms, with those business functions whose activities support this, such as Compliance, facing increasing levels of challenge in their efforts to be effective. The Changing Face of Compliance addresses core aspects of this challenge, considering the relationship between regulation and compliance and key influences on both, offering insight into the effectiveness of current approaches and addressing practical compliance challenges. Sharon Ward explains how the role of Compliance might be strengthened and those who work within it further enabled to support the current focus on improving standards in business, offering recommendations for enhancing this role. The text includes a mix of hands-on advice, examples and research based on the experiences of practitioners, educators and regulators drawn from across a wide range of jurisdictions and sectors. This is a thoughtful and timely book, whether you are concerned about the growing and changing implications of regulatory risk; the benefit of leveraging additional value from your Compliance function or your own Compliance role; or ways of transforming and sustaining the function to ensure its continued relevance to the business.
