Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1976, Paul Johnson’s exceptional study of Christianity has been loved and widely hailed for its intensive research, writing, and magnitude—“a tour de force, one of the most ambitious surveys of the history of Christianity ever attempted and perhaps the most radical” (New York Review of Books). In a highly readable companion to books on faith and history, the scholar and author Johnson has illuminated the Christian world and its fascinating history in a way that no other has. Johnson takes off in the year AD 49 with his namesake the apostle Paul. Thus beginning an ambitious quest to paint the centuries since the founding of a little-known ‘Jesus Sect’, A History of Christianity explores to a great degree the evolution of the Western world. With an unbiased and overall optimistic tone, Johnson traces the fantastic scope of the consequent sects of Christianity and the people who followed them. Information drawn from extensive and varied sources from around the world makes this history as credible as it is reliable. Invaluable understanding of the framework of modern Christianity—and its trials and tribulations throughout history—has never before been contained in such a captivating work.

Book The Christian Idea in the Modern World Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Christian Idea in the Modern World Classic Reprint written by Raymond Calkins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-21 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Idea in the Modern World A large number of people, both young and old, brought up under the influence of historic Christianity, have begun seriously to question whether the Christian Idea is fitted to the actual conditions of our modern world. The distance seems to widen between the idealism of far-away Galilee and the battle-ground of life today. The Christian Idea seems to many people to be true neither to the facts of human nature nor to the facts of human life. The contrast is sharpened by those who insist that Jesus' teaching of love outlaws the use of force, inculcates literal non-resistance, and insists on peace at any cost. To vindicate the reasonableness and practicability of the Christian Idea, to show that it is the only one which does justice to all the elements of human nature, and is the only one which can be trusted to deal adequately with the prob lems of our modern world, is the purpose of these chapters. The material in this book was used originally in sermons and addresses by the author. It has been entirely revised for the present publication. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fundamental Ideas of Christianity, Vol. 2 In the second place, it is only another form of the same theogy of negation or limitation according to which the source of evil is supposed to lie, not simply in the finite, but more particularly in the sensuous nature of man, or in the conflict which necessarily arises between the flesh and the spirit, the sensuous and the rational elements of man's nature. Embodiment in a corporeal nature is the necessary condition of the individuality of each finite Spirit; and, according to this theory, it is not the finite spirit simply as finite, but the relation of the finite spirit to its material or fleshly embodiment, which hinders it from becoming the pure organ of the divine or infinite spirit, and which creates that negative element in man's nature which is the essence of evil. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fundamental Ideas of Christianity, Vol. 1 I have undertaken with much hesitation to write a short sketch of my brother's life, as an intro duction to his Gifford Lectures. In doing so, I have to remember that he was a man of much reserve, which even after his death I am bound to respect; and that for a long time my relations with him were so close and intimate, that it is probably impossible for me to see him as others saw him. Also his life was uneventful, and the materials in the way of correspondence which are at my disposal are not large. Download or read book The Meaning of Christianity Classic Reprint written by Frederick A. M. Spencer and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Meaning of Christianity Religion is activity of souls in which it is supposed that there is intercourse with supernatural power. A religion is a recognised kind of such activity. No.w religion involves ideas concerning the nature of the power with which intercourse is supposed to be held and concerning the means of intercourse. And as the moral sense develops, there arise and grow ideas concerning right and wrong, together with reward and punishment from the being or. beings which arc the objects of religion. Accordingly, religion naturally carries with it some sort of thought concerning the controlling being or beings of the World and concerning the use to be made of human life, so as to avoid evil and obtain good. Now there is a tendency in the human mind to try to extend the systems of thought connected with religion, without regard to the practical requirements of religion or of the conduct of life. For abundance and completeness of thought seem to be intrinsically good. But it may be that such theology prepares for progress in religion and the conduct of life, even as scientific inquiries which were pursued purely for the sake of the extension of knowledge proved subsequently of great practical utility. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of Christianity For those who desire to study the subject Of these lectures in greater detail, I recommend especially the works on Church history by Baur and Hase. They are mutually complementary. The former is remarkable for his large and spirited interpretation Of the main ideas Of that epoch, Of the fundamental thoughts of the great teachers and heroic leaders as well as Of the teleological connection in the en tire development. The latter is masterly in the Wealth Of detail, the art of vivid narration and the nice, intelligent characterization Of the actors in their relation to their environment. The two writ ers have in common great Objectivity in the treat ment Of the material; they have the ability to trans pose themselves without prejudice into times past and persons distant and foreign, as well as to judge them justly on the basis of the conditions Of their own day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and the Modern Mind Partly because of the limitations of space, and partly because any real insight into the proc esses can be gained only by long discipline and training. Here my function, if humble, is none the less honourable. It is that of a kind of theological middleman, who would mediate to thoughtful but non-academic per sons the main conclusions about the origin and meaning of the Christian Religion, to which the general body of scholars have come or are coming. Hence my aim Is not critical, but positive and constructive. There are Signs that more criticism is losing its interest for thoughtful minds within the Church. This has come about partly because criticism has largely done its work - a great and noble and necessary work - and partly because the human soul cannot permanently live by oriti cism alone, but ever seeks to go beyond it in search of something to which criticism is a mere preliminary. Hence there is a craving today for a richer, a more positive expo sitiou of the great truths of Christianity than. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Paul's Conception of Christianity Two important questions may be asked concerning St. Paul's Christian theology: Where did he get it? And, Whence do we Obtain our knowledge of it? It is with the latter of these questions that we are now to be occupied. By sources is here meant the literary materials available for becoming acquainted with the great Gentile apostle's characteristic way of thinking on the leading themes connected with the Christian faith. If we wanted to know, as far as is possible, all that St. Paul thought on any topic relating to the faith, we should have to regard all his extant Epistles as our sources, and our first task would be to ascertain to the best of our ability how many of the separate writings ascribed to him in the New Testament are authentic. If, on the other hand, our aim be, as it is, to determine. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity Is Christ The aim of this handbook is to present in a short, popular form the substance of what has been written in recent years on the central subject of Christianity the Person and Work of Christ. It is intended to pro vide materials for answering a question which has often been raised of late, What is Christianity? For some time past there have been clear indications that the question of the Personality of Jesus Christ is being re examined and re-considered, and that once again it has become in a very definite way the center of oppo sition to Christianity. It is hoped that this summary of the Christian position as stated by its leading modern exponents will prove of service to theological students and younger clergy, as well as to the men and women in our churches who are brought face to face with va rions attacks on the Christian faith. A bibliography of the best works is appended, and the present manual is little more than the substance of these in outline for general use. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Main Points: A Study in Christian Belief This book is not intended as a treatise on systematic theology. It came about in this way. In this large parish I was continually meeting religiously reared peo ple who had lost confidence in some of the doctrinal statements accepted by them in earlier days as being the very words of eternal life. They had an uneasy feel ing because the traditional phrases of religious speech did not set forth with unstrained naturalness and trans parent sincerity the facts of their religious lives. Some of them had therefore thrown all such phrases away and were practically offering their devotions at the altar of a revered but Unknown God. Others with more conservative instincts retained the phrases, but with a silent yearning to have them interpreted anew, and thus compelled to yield their intended help for daily life. These people knew that within a comparatively few years many of the great inherited, historical state ments of religion had come to be deemed inadequate that consequently such truths were being restated in terms of actual life: and they were asking what this more modern way of thinking about religious matters had to say directly about certain cardinal doctrines. It seemed wise therefore to announce a series of ten doctrinal addresses on the somewhat ambitious theme. Book The Essence of Christianity Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Essence of Christianity Classic Reprint written by Ludwig Feuerbach and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essence of Christianity Pressed in general terms, and thus made the property of the understanding. The ideas of my work are only conclusions, consequences, drawn from premises which are not themselves mere ideas, but objective facts either actual or historical - facts which had not their place in my head simply in virtue of their ponderous existence in folio. I unconditionally repudiate absolute, immaterial, sclf-sufiicin g speculation, -that speculation which draws its material from within. I differ toto coelo from those philosophers who pluck out their eyes that they may see better; for my thought I require the senses, especially sight I found my ideas on materials which can be appropriated only through the activity of the senses. I do not generate the object from the thought, but the thought from the object; and I hold that alone to be an object which has an existence beyond one's own brain. I am an idealist only in the region of practical philosophy, that is, I do not regard the limits of the past and present as the limits of humanity, of the future on the contrary, I firmly believe that many things, - yes, many things - which, With the Short Sighted, pusillanimous practical men of to-day, pass for flights of imagination, for ideas never to be realized, fer mere chimeras, will to-morrow, z. E., in the next century, -centuries in individual life are days in the life of humanity - exist in full reality. Briefly, the Idea is to me only faith in the historical future, in the triumph of truth and virtue it has for me only a political and moral significance for in the sphere of strictly theoretical philosophy, I attach myself, in direct Opposition to the Hegelian philosophy, only to realism, to materialism in the sense above indicated. The maxim hitherto adopted by speculative philoso phy all that is mine I carry with me, the old omnia mea mecum porto, I cannot, alas I appropriate. I have many things outside myself, which I cannot convey either in my pocket or my head, but which neverthe less I look upon as belonging to me, not indeed as a mere man - a view not now in question - but as a. Download or read book The Grounds of Christian Belief Classic Reprint written by Frederick William James Butler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Grounds of Christian Belief IN this little volume I have sought to set forth the foundations and meaning of the Christian Faith in a way that will com mend itself to men and women of the present day. A little book on simple lines will serve a useful purpose if it meets some of the difficulties of those who, though keenly interested in the things that count, might turn away sorrowing from a ponderous work. I have stated my aim in the hope that the readers for whom it is designed may not confuse my efforts with those of others whose writings they might fear would prove too exacting. It is generally recognized that a gulf exists between the knowledge of the real masters of contemporary Thought and that of readers of ordinary or even of unusual education, who, about the matters which in the last issue are alone worthy of sustained consideration, ask: Are these things so P If this little book can in any way help to bridge that gulf, it will meet an acknowledged need.
