Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cavalier Soldier's Vade-Mecum It is a small Book of Prayer and Praise for the Soldiers in the Cavalier Army. Probably it was soon found by the enemy and the issue of it quashed. The book discovered is complete, and is made up of two sheets (a and B) of eight leaves each. The dignity and simplicity of the language of this little book are worthy of the best tradi tions of the Church of England. It would be very natural that the chaplains in attendance on the King's army should use some special forms, long before what was used became crystallized in this little volume. I think the following is worth quoting from the sermon as then printed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cavaliers I was sixteen years of age on the day of the peace of Prague. News travelled slowly in those days, but I had good reason to remember it, as the reader will presently learn, for a certain flogging had an edge to it that bit deep into my memory. I was the eldest of four, and caused more trouble to my loving mother's patient heart than all the others together. I would fain believe that this did not arise from any inherent Viciousness, but rather from restlessness and levity that time has now abated. In justice to my father's memory I must set down that he did his best to correct the faults of my youth, but 'twas in his own way, and a hard one for a high-spirited boy to suffer patiently. His panacea was an oaken cudgel that hung from a leathern thong by the stable door, and the remedy was applied with abundant goodwill. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of a Cavalier: Or a Military Journal of the Wars in Germany and the Wars in England After a period of retirement at home, the Cavalier took advantage of the troubles with Scotland in 1639 to serve the king with a troop of horse. In the following year he was again in the North, and when King Charles' s forces had been defeated at Newburn, he was sent as a messenger to negotiate a treaty. The Civil War broke out in 1642, and the Cavalier served in his father's regiment at an action with the rebels under Essex in October. A few days later he was at the battle of Edgehill (fought on Sunday, October 23rd, not 24th, as Defoe says), and he was with the king when the Royalist advance on London was stopped at Brentford. In February 1643 the Cava lier was wounded at the capture Of Cirencester by the Royalists, and in July he contributed to the defeat of Sir William Waller at Roundway Down by taking a body of horse and dragoons to the aid of Sir Wil liam Hopton. Then came the siege of Gloucester. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Soldier of the Legion Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Soldier of the Legion Classic Reprint written by C. N. Williamson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Soldier of the Legion There he stood, this show young man, welt-groomed and smart in his full-dress uniform of second lieutenant of cavalry, the stripes and splashes of yellow suiting his dark skin: a slim, erect figure, not very tall, but a soldier every inch Of him, though the wide-apart blue eyes gave the square-chinned face a boyish air Of wistfulness, even when he smiled his delightfully childlike, charming smile. Girls glanced at him as they swung past in their partners' arms, noticing how tense was the look on the brown face, and how the straight eyebrows even blacker than the smooth dark hair were drawn together in expectant concentration. Suddenly the door Opened. The curtain-raiser was over. The drama of the evening was about to begin. It seemed wonderful that the band could keep presence of mind 'to go on playing the Merry Widow, instead of stopping short with a gasp and crash of instruments, to start again with the Tango Trance, her dance in Girls' Love. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Soldier of the Valley Sometimes I wonder if I shall ever make an other journey as long as that one. Sometimes I have ventured as far as the gap, and pooped into the broad open country, and caught the rumble of the trains down by the river. There is one of the world's highways, but the toll is great, and a crippled soldier with a scanty pen sion and a pittance from his school is wiser to keep to the ways he knows.
