Book The Causes of Evolution Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Causes of Evolution Classic Reprint written by John Burdon Sanderson Haldane and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-07 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Causes of Evolution So close a correlation is rather rare in the history of human thought. For example, men had been aware for ages of the existence of a past history of the human race before Daniel (or the author of the Book of Daniel) made the first attempt to View that history as a whole, and give a summary account of it. If Daniel had been the first person to persuade thinking men that the past had differed appreciably from the present, it is clear that his particular account of the historical process would have had a greater intellectual influence than it has actually had} We must therefore carefully distinguish between two quite different doctrines which Darwin popularised, the doctrine of evolution, and that of natural selection. It is quite possible to hold the first and not the second. Similarly with regard to the doctrines of Darwin's great contemporary Marx, it is possible to adopt socialism but not historical materialism. That species are subject to change is a fact as general and as fundamental in the organic world as gravitation is in the inorganic, and no less important in its relations to human progress. Our knowledge of evolution is far from complete, but it affords our only insight into many important problems. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dynamic Evolution: A Study of the Causes of Evolution and Degeneracy Scientist think they believe in evolution, but they really believe in special creation. They have established, with a fair degree of certainty, that the animals of today are the genetic descendants of different animals of earlier ages, but their explanations of how the earlier animals became transformed into the present animals involves nothing but special creation. Our present animals may be descended, through successive stages, from unicellular organisms, but such a thing as human intelligence was not derived from man's ancestors because man's ancestors did not possess human intelligence. Somewhere and at some time there have been created those things which characterize modern animals. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution and the Need of Atonement As the title indicates, the main object of this book is not to offer a new theory of the Atonement. Rather it is intended to Show that when the origin and history of man are studied from the scientific, and especially the biological side, the spiritual life, its partial failure, and the need for Atonement, far from receding into vagueness and unreality, are thrown into strong relief. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of Evolution In presenting the following pages to the public, the author wishes it to be understood that he does not expect to convert any to a belief in evolution. He addresses those who accept the doctrine in some form or other as established, although he has endeavoured, as concisely as possible, to present the reader with the reasons for accepting it. Those who remain unconvinced by the elaborate works of Darwin, Spencer, and others will probably not accept the views enunciated in these pages, which, however, it is hoped, will not be unacceptable to many who wish to reconcile the theory of evolution with the highest aims of human thought. Neither does the writer of the present essay claim a place for it with the more solid works of original research quoted by him. The facts are, with few exceptions, widely known, and will be found in the works referred to. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Evolution: With Special Reference to the Evidence Upon Which It Is Founded A new book on evolution, which can lay little claim to novelty of fact or treatment, certainly demands an explanation, if not an apology. My choice of subject for the Westbrook lectures Of 1914 was determined by the very general misapprehension in the public mind concerning the present status Of the evolutionary theory among men Of science. It is widely believed that the theory is an outworn device, which naturalists are beginning to discard and that soon it will have a merely historical in terest. This misunderstanding, for such it is, has arisen from the debates among zoologists and botan ists as to the manner in which evolution has actually occurred and the efficient causes which have brought it about, and, further, from the ambiguous way in which the term Darwinism is Often employed. Frequently, the term is made a synonym of evolu tion, but it ought properly to be restricted to Dar win's explanation Of evolution by natural selection. Book The Evolution of Life Or Causes of Change in Animal Forms

Download or read book The Evolution of Life Or Causes of Change in Animal Forms written by Hubbard Winslow Mitchell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-14 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Life, or Causes of Change in Animal Forms: A Study in Biology The great question of The Evolution of Life upon the earth, and the causes that have led to the successive changes in animal forms, is one that should be treated from an anatomical and a physiological point of view. Scientists have hitherto spoken of these changes that have taken place, and have concurred in the opinion that the lower forms of life have advanced in the scale of development, and in time have given rise to higher and newer forms. It is believed and generally accepted that the protoplasmic cell was the first vital organism that appeared upon the earth - that, following this in order came the protozoans, the fishes, the reptiles, the marsupials, the mammals, the higher apes, and finally man, but no attempt has ever been made, as far as I know, to explain the physiological causes of these changes in the anatomy of the animal kingdom. It is only a part of the truth to say that a reptile was evolved from a fish, a mammal from a reptile, and man from the higher apes. But this is not enough. The world is advancing to that point when it demands to know [1010 these changes took place, by what physi ological process they occurred, and what was the reason that induced them to change. It is this great point that I have endeavored to explain, - how far, and how well I have succeeded, I leave others to judge. If any thing is left unsaid or unexplained it may serve as a stimulus to future writers to finish the work I have planned out. I have written this work from a physi. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution and the Origin of Life "To experience we refer, as the only ground of all physical inquiry. But before experience itself can be used with advantage, there is one preliminary step to make, which depends wholly on ourselves: it is the absolute dismissal and clearing of the mind of all prejudice from whatever source arising, and the determination to stand or fall by the result of a direct appeal to facts in the first instance, and of strict logical deduction from them afterwards." Sir John Herschel: Discourse on the Study of Natural Philosophy. "The fair question is, Does the newly proposed view remove more difficulties, require fewer assumptions, and present more consistency with observed facts than that which it seeks to supersede? if so the philosopher will adopt it, and the world will follow the philosopher - after many days." Book Evolution and Genetics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Evolution and Genetics Classic Reprint written by Thomas Hunt Morgan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution and Genetics HE third reprinting Of the Vanuxem Lectures for 1915-16, entitled A Critique of the Theory of Evolution, having been exhausted, the publishers have asked for a revised edition. The revision is no less an attempt at a critique Of the evolution theory than its predecessor, but, as the change in title sug gests, greater attention is here paid to one Of the most debated questions among evolutionists today, namely, the bearing Of the recent discoveries in genetics and in mutation on the theory Of evolution. While in a general way Darwin's theory Of Natu ral Selection is independent Of the origin Of the new variations that furnish it with its materials, yet the scientific formulation Of the theory is intimately con nected with the origin and inheritance Of suitable vari ations. For instance, if most of the observed variabil ity Of animals and plants were due directly to the environment, and if the effects thus brought about were not inherited, such variability could no longer be appealed to as material for natural selection. Again, if the variations that appear as mutants are always defective types, they could not, even though they are inherited, be appealed to as furnishing ma terial for progressive evolution. This book was released on 2018-10-04 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Direct Action of Environment and Evolution Herbert Spencer had already come to this conclusion, only giving even more importance to the first factor: The foregoing chapters, he wrote, in the second enlarged edition of his principles of Biology, imply that neither extreme (i. E natural selection alone, or the direct action of environment Without the aid of natural selection) is here adopted. Agreeing with Mr. Darwin that both factors have been operative, I hold that the inheritance of functionally caused alterations has played a larger part 'than he admitted even at the close of his life; and that, coming more to the front as evolution has advanced, it has played the chief part in producing the highest types. Book Evolution and Adaptation Classic Reprint

Download or read book Evolution and Adaptation Classic Reprint written by Thomas Hunt Morgan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution and Adaptation The adaptation of animals and plants to the conditions under which they live has always excited the interest, and also the imagination, of philosophers and scientists; for this relation between the organism and its environment is one of the most characteristic features of living things. The ques tion at once suggests itself: How has such a relation been brought about? Is it due to something inherent in the liv ing matter itself, or is it something that has been, as it were, superimposed upon it? An example may make my meaning clearer. No one will suppose that there is anything inherent in iron and other metals that would cause them to produce an engine if left to themselves. The particular arrangement of the pieces has been superimposed upon the metals, so that they now fulfil a purpose, or use. Have the materials of which organisms are composed been given a definite arrange ment, so that they fulfil the purpose of maintaining the existence of the organism; and if so, how has this been accomplished? It is the object of the following pages to discuss this question in all its bearings, and to give, as far as possible, an idea of the present state of biological thought concerning the problem. I trust that the reader will not be disappointed if he finds in the sequel that many of the most fundamental questions in regard to adaptation are still unsettled. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Living Organisms The variety of living things is so great, the manifesta tions of life so diverse and wonderful, that it may seem at first sight impossible to explain them all as the result of the continuous and uniform action of certain funda mental natural causes. Yet this is the ambition of the scientific student of nature. But, before attempting to describe the process of evolution, and estimate the im portance of the several factors which have contributed to bring about the development of life, let us see what science can teach concerning the physical and chemical properties of living organisms.
