Book Improperly Posed Problems in Partial Differential Equations

Download or read book Improperly Posed Problems in Partial Differential Equations written by L. E. Payne and published by SIAM. This book was released on 1975-01-01 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improperly posed Cauchy problems are the primary topics in this discussion which assumes that the geometry and coefficients of the equations are known precisely. Appropriate references are made to other classes of improperly posed problems. The contents include straight forward examples of methods eigenfunction, quasireversibility, logarithmic convexity, Lagrange identity, and weighted energy used in treating improperly posed Cauchy problems. The Cauchy problem for a class of second order operator equations is examined as is the question of determining explicit stability inequalities for solving the Cauchy problem for elliptic equations. Among other things, an example with improperly posed perturbed and unperturbed problems is discussed and concavity methods are used to investigate finite escape time for classes of operator equations.

Book Vector valued Laplace Transforms and Cauchy Problems

Download or read book Vector valued Laplace Transforms and Cauchy Problems written by Wolfgang Arendt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-04-05 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph gives a systematic account of the theory of vector-valued Laplace transforms, ranging from representation theory to Tauberian theorems. In parallel, the theory of linear Cauchy problems and semigroups of operators is developed completely in the spirit of Laplace transforms. Existence and uniqueness, regularity, approximation and above all asymptotic behaviour of solutions are studied. Diverse applications to partial differential equations are given. The book contains an introduction to the Bochner integral and several appendices on background material. It is addressed to students and researchers interested in evolution equations, Laplace and Fourier transforms, and functional analysis. The second edition contains detailed notes on the developments in the last decade. They include, for instance, a new characterization of well-posedness of abstract wave equations in Hilbert space due to M. Crouzeix. Moreover new quantitative results on asymptotic behaviour of Laplace transforms have been added. The references are updated and some errors have been corrected.

Book Partial Differential Equations

Download or read book Partial Differential Equations written by P. R. Garabedian and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2023-10-19 with total page 686 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a review of the original edition: This book is primarily a text for a graduate course in partial differential equations, although the later chapters are devoted to special topics not ordinarily covered in books in this field … [T]he author has made use of an interesting combination of classical and modern analysis in his proofs … Because of the author's emphasis on constructive methods for solving problems which are of physical interest, his book will likely be as welcome to the engineer and the physicist as to the mathematician … The author and publisher are to be complimented on the general appearance of the book. —Mathematical Reviews This book is a gem. It fills the gap between the standard introductory material on PDEs that an undergraduate is likely to encounter after a good ODE course (separation of variables, the basics of the second-order equations from mathematical physics) and the advanced methods (such as Sobolev spaces and fixed point theorems) that one finds in modern books. Although this is not designed as a textbook for applied mathematics, the approach is strongly informed by applications. For instance, there are many existence and uniqueness results, but they are usually approached via very concrete techniques. The text contains the standard topics that one expects in an intermediate PDE course: the Dirichlet and Neumann problems, Cauchy's problem, characteristics, the fundamental solution, PDEs in the complex domain, plus a chapter on finite differences, on nonlinear fluid mechanics, and another on integral equations. It is an excellent text for advanced undergraduates or beginning graduate students in mathematics or neighboring fields, such as engineering and physics, where PDEs play a central role.
