Book The Most Land the Best Cattle

Download or read book The Most Land the Best Cattle written by Judy Alter and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 19th century, Daniel Waggoner and his son, W.T. (Tom), put together an empire in North Texas that became the largest ranch under one fence in the nation. The 520,000-plus acres or 800 square miles covers six counties and sits on a large oil field in the Red River Valley of North Texas. Over the years, the estate also owned five banks, three cottonseed oil mills, and a coal company. While the Waggoner men built the empire, their wives and daughters enjoyed the fruits of their labor. This dynasty’s love of the land was rivaled only by their love of money and celebrity, and the different family factions eventually clashed. Although Dan seems to have led a fairly low-profile life, W. T. moved to Fort Worth, became a bank director, built two office buildings, ran his cattle on the Big Pasture in Indian Territory (Oklahoma), hosted Teddy Roosevelt at a wolf hunt in the Big Pasture, and sent Quanah Parker to Washington, D.C., for Roosevelt’s inauguration. W. T. had two sons, Guy and E. Paul, and a daughter named Electra, the light of his life. W. T. built a mansion in Fort Worth for her—today the house, the last surviving cattle baron mansion on Fort Worth’s Silk Stocking Row, is open to the public for tours and events. Electra, an international celebrity and extravagant shopper (she once spent $10,000 in one day at Neiman Marcus), died at the age of forty-three. Guy had nine wives; his brother E. Paul, partier and horse breeder, was married to the same woman for fifty years and had one daughter, Electra II. Electra II was a both a celebrity and a talented sculptor, best known for a heroic-size statue of Will Rogers on his horse, Soapsuds, as well as busts of two presidents and various movie stars. After marriage to an executive she settled in a mansion at the ranch and raised two daughters. This colorful history of one of Texas’s most influential ranching families demonstrates that it took strength and determination to survive in the ranching world…and the society it spawned.

Book excerpt: “The best all-around study of the American cowboy ever written. Every page crackles with keen analysis and vivid prose about the Old West. A must-read!” — Douglas Brinkley, author of The Wilderness Warrior: Theodore Roosevelt and the Crusade for America The open-range cattle era lasted barely a quarter century, but it left America irrevocably changed. Cattle Kingdom reveals how the West rose and fell, and how its legacy defines us today. The tale takes us from dust-choked cattle drives to the unlikely splendors of boomtowns like Abilene, Kansas, and Cheyenne, Wyoming. We meet a diverse cast, from cowboy Teddy Blue to failed rancher and future president Teddy Roosevelt. This is a revolutionary new appraisal of the Old West and the America it made. “Knowlton writes well about all the fun stuff: trail drives, rambunctious cow towns, gunfights and range wars . . . [He] enlists all of these tropes in support of an intriguing thesis: that the romance of the Old West arose upon the swelling surface of a giant economic bubble . . . Cattle Kingdom is The Great Plains by way of The Big Short.” — Wall Street Journal “Knowlton deftly balances close-ups and bird’s-eye views. We learn countless details . . . More important, we learn why the story played out as it did.” — New York Times Book Review “The best one-volume history of the legendary era of the cowboy and cattle empires in thirty years.” — True West

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abducted by rancher Baron Selkirk-okay, it was an accident, but now he won't let her go-former TV child star turned horse whisperer Addie Jelleff enjoys a respite from the media circus that ruined her quiet retreat in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, but she's due back to town to defend her actor pal at his trial. Baron's vast, isolated ranch is only one of his many attractions, but he's awfully domineering and she can't possibly give in to their growing attraction while she's virtually his prisoner, can she? Baron sees the situation differently. Forced to drop his geology career and take over the family ranch, he's frustrated by too many people saying no to him. Isn't he in charge? Why is Addie so mysterious about her past and her commitments to another man? Why won't she give in to Baron, when every time they touch, they catch fire? It's a battle of wills-with neither one backing down. Addie can tame the wildest stallion, but reining in her own growing attraction to the high-handed rancher and keeping him from breaking through her defenses requires all her strength-and some help from unexpected sources. Praise for Captive of the Cattle Baron from the judges of the Touch of Magic Contest: "Full of life and real people with distinct, believable voices and personalities." "Love your voice! This was so easy to read. I love it when the author disappears and the story comes to life. Few are able to carry that off well-you have that talent." "Enjoyed the read! You have a great story!" From the judges of The Write Stuff Contest: "Addie's likeable and she's acting in a believable manner, so good job there." "The dialogue is quite natural and compelling. Great job!" "I loved the premise of the story." "Your opening scene was great! I love how it started with your two characters meeting each other in not the best circumstances." "I love your characters; both have something they need to redeem in different ways." "From your voice, to your characters, and plot you have an amazing story here." "Great western feel and classic fish out of water story." From the judges of the Emily Contest: "I think you're a truly talented writer." "I like that you got right into the story, introducing the characters and giving the readers enough back story to pique their curiosity." "Great story. Congratulations!" "It was very clear that Baron and Addie would be an excellent match (beyond their initial physical attraction)." "Very good! Very intriguing and likeable characters. I would totally go horseback riding with Addie."

Book Last Train to El Paso

Download or read book Last Train to El Paso written by Jerry J. Lobdill and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-06-09 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central event is the contract murder of Thomas Lyons, the owner of the largest ranch in the United States in 1917. Lyons' ranch was in Grant County, New Mexico, and he was lured to EL Paso on business and murdered there. Only the hit man was convicted, although his co-conspirators were identified and obviously guilty. A motive for the crime was never asserted. After the hit man was convicted, the case was officially closed as unsolved. It was quickly forgotten and for nearly 100 years no one realized what had actually happened and who the co-conspirators really were. The murder created a sensation in El Paso, and over the course of the investigation, arrests, and court proceedings, the case drew more courtroom spectators than any case in the history of the city—even to the present day. The El Paso Morning Times and the competing El Paso Herald covered the case extensively, publishing about 140 articles about it in the nine months it took to convict the hit man. Strangely, two co-conspirators who were obviously guilty and who were indicted with the hit man were dismissed before the end of the case, and a third co-conspirator was never indicted. After the conviction of the hit man the case was closed and not another word about it was published, even though no one denied that it was a conspiracy-to-murder case, and there was no excuse for dismissing the two men who escaped. The dismissed men and the unindicted co-conspirator were described in the newspapers as prominent cattlemen. The widow of the victim, who had been so actively engaged in pursuit of justice, strangely announced that she would not pursue the case further after the hit man was convicted. So the case was filed away and forgotten for nearly 100 years. In 2011 I discovered this case while tracing the lives of two of the individuals who were indicted in the case. These two men had been members of the murder-for-hire organization formed by the Old West assassin, “Deacon” Jim Miller. When Miller was lynched in April 1909, it was generally assumed that the omnipresent false witnesses he called in his trials just disappeared from history at that time. However, here they were as co-conspirators in a spectacular contract murder eight years later, and nobody seemed to realize who they really were. And their identity remained unknown until I uncovered the case.Last Train to El Paso presents an in-depth forensic study of the case and unravels the tangled web that was so expertly spun by the principals involved.
