Book The Catholic Organist s Quarterly Fall 2016

Download or read book The Catholic Organist s Quarterly Fall 2016 written by Noel Jones and published by . This book was released on 2017-04-25 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After spending many years in abeyance, there are clear signs that the organ is making a welcome return to Roman Catholic liturgical life. Parishes across the country are installing new organs and hiring professional organists, and Diocesan Music Directors are providing training and support for or- ganists in their areas. This development is as it should be. The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy promulgated by the Second Vatican Council made it quite clear that the organ was the instrument of choice for the liturgy of the Church:Organum tubulatum in Ecclesia latina magno in honore habeatur, tamquam instrumentum musi- cum traditionale, cuius sonus Ecclesiae caeremoniis mirum addere valet splendorem, atque mentes ad Deum ac superna vehementer extollere."The pipe organ is to be held in high esteem in the Latin Church, for it is the traditional musical instrument, the sound of which can add a wonderful splendor to the Church's ceremonies and powerfully lifts up men's minds to God and higher things".Sacrosanctum Concilium, Chapter VI, Paragraph 120However, the organ, like any instrument, can be a two-edged sword. While it can lift up the mind "to God and higher things" it is also possible for it to cre- ate a dismal experience where the mind is focused on anything but God. Like every church musician, an organist has a sacred responsibility to ensure that the organ performs its true function so that the faithful are edified and brought to devotion. As a Catholic Church organist myself, I have long lamented the lack of easily accessible collections of organ music composed specically for the Catholic liturgy, or which is particularly suitable for it. A col- league of mine puts it, "when I hear the organ play in church, I want to know that I'm in a Catholic Church."I know what he means. There is an aesthetic that is uniquely Catholic, and this goes beyond the liturgical seasons and the melodies that are appropriate for those seasons. THere is organ music that helps create an aesthetic space for prayer and contempla- tion, allowing the faithful to focus on the presence of Christ in the Sacrament, music which does not drawattention to itself, but which supports the unity of the Body of Christ in the Celebration of the Eucharist: the sum and center of our life. However, this music also has a role to play in defining the seasons of the year, underscoring celebrations, and providing a point of comfort in times of trial. The Verdin Company has a close relationship with the Catholic Church, and with our bells, carillons, and organs, we offer every church a unique collection of resources. However, installing organs is not enough; that's only part of the story. We need to equip those charged with their use. We believe our responsibility goes way beyond the sale and installation of bells or organs. We want to enable those installations to be used in the fullest way possible.Hence the VERDIN CATHOLIC ORGANIST'S QUARTERLY.Noel Jones has worked tirelessly to produce a volume of music, all of which can be played by organists of modest experience (none of it requires pedals), and which is all of excellent quality. The music is laid out in sections for the various seasons of the year, but it goes without saying that most of it (with some obvious exceptions) is suitable for many different times of the year.It should also be noted that these pieces can be played in a variety of ways. I encourage organists to try them fast and slow, loud and quiet, so that they may be used in the liturgy in different ways. The Catholic Organist's Quarterly will be published four times a year: January, April, July, and October. Each one will contain music that is appropriate for that particular period, but much which could be played at any time. Subscribers to the Quarterly will soon build a library of fine organ music that they can call on for years to come.Neil Weston The Verdin Company Cincinnati, OH June 2016

Download or read book The Catholic Organist s Quarterly Spring written by Noel Jones and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-12-04 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sacred Music Library is proud to present the last in our first series of four books of organ music for the Liturgical Year. After the great Feasts of Easter and Pentecost, and the solemnity of Trinity Sunday and Corpus Christi, we embark upon the long summer and fall days of Ordinary Time, which can seem to stretch inexorably into a never-ending future. Without an overarching "theme" it can be a challenge to keep a sense of musical direction in a period where there are few feast days. Noel Jones has met this challenge and has succeeded in creating a truly useful selection of pieces that will make Ordinary Time fizz with interest and musical satisfaction. When Noel first talked about this project with me, we both agreed that it would be great to "over deliver". By that, we wanted to see volumes that would have more music than any other comparable volume on the market; enough that organists would be able to return year after year and still gain something new. I believe that this has proved to be the case, and a discussion with a Quarterly subscriber at the recent NPM Convention in Cincinnati has shown this to be true. is particular organist said that it would probably take him five years to play all the music in these volumes. That is exactly what we wanted this series of books to be. In addition to a broad selection of preludes and postludes, Noel has also established a Wedding section in this volume, where you may find excellent choices for the lengthy wedding preludes that we are often called upon to fill. In addition, Noel has included some more choral anthems. This was an excellent idea in the last issue, and it allows these timeless works to be heard at mass, even where there is not a choir available to sing them in their original form. Their harmonic structure is uniquely suited for inclusion in the sacred liturgy. This set of four books has truly been a labor of love. Noel has maintained its high standard of excellence throughout, both in terms of the music selected, and the quality of the engraving. In this he has been sup- ported and assisted with great diligence and skill by his wife, Ellen Doll Jones, a professional organist of high caliber herself, together with the excellent team of engravers at Frog Music Press. The Verdin Co. has been honored to be associated with such an impressive and important contribution to the musical resources available to Catholic Church musicians, and we hope that all four volumes will continue to provide you with a rich source of inspiration for many years to come. Book excerpt: While organ teachers delight in assigning lengthy organ pieces to students as their organ skills improve, these pieces, grand as they may be, are for the most part not useful to the Catholic organist who plays for Mass. Many teachers are not aware that composers also wrote easier, as well as shorter, teaching pieces for the organ. These same pieces are also very useful for playing at Mass. In this collection they are entitled Ubungen (German) and Etude (French), in English - "Exercises." You will find that these are not boring pieces, but rather little gems of music which are fun to play. Included is a section of Easy Organ Postludes for playing after Mass on well-loved Catholic hymn tunes followed by a selection of Wedding organ music. Organ stop registrations for each piece help make this music even more useful.

This book was released on 2017-04-25 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sacred Music Library presents the second book in this series. As we embark upon another calendar year, we find ourselves in the midst of the richest days of the liturgical calendar. We have completed the mystical journey of Advent and shared the joy of Christmas, and we now move quickly through Epiphany to Lent, Holy Week, and Easter. The organ is unique among all instruments in its ability to define different moods in a profoundly affecting way. With joy, awe, mystery, and poignancy, the organ speaks in infinitely contrasting ways, allowing the church to experience more deeply the profound lessons of the liturgical year. With diligence and care, Noel Jones has, once again, put together a compilation of superb organ music which will help you to more effectively support the liturgical journey of your own parish. We start with Epiphany, that supremely mystical feast in which the true nature of Christ is fully manifested. Noel has chosen some wonderful music that will allow you to support the celebration of this solemnity with confidence. For the period of Ordinary Time which follows we have a wide selection of music which should provide you with everything you need for the weeks leading up to Ash Wednesday. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal forbids the use of the organ at mass for anything other than to accompany singing during the season of Lent: "In Lent the playing of the organ and musical instruments is allowed only in order to support the singing. Exceptions, however, are Laetare Sunday (Fourth Sunday of Lent), Solemnities, and Feasts." Therefore, preludes and postlude should not be played at mass during Lent. We have, however, included music for Lent for those parishes which require music for Penance Services and other extra-liturgical activities where subdued music would be appropriate. However, we urge all parish musicians to follow the directive of the General Instruction when it comes to the Mass, and allow silence to mark most effectively the penitential nature of the season. We include a few pieces for Easter at the conclusion of this volume for Easter Day itself. The next issue of the Quarterly will include music for the rest of Eastertide. Neil Weston

Book Selected Writings of Max Reger

Download or read book Selected Writings of Max Reger written by Christopher Anderson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Max Reger (1873-1916) was a celebrated German composer, performer on piano and organ, and conductor. Well known for his compositions for keyboards and orchestra, Reger worked during the crucial decades when Western music transformed itself from the misty veil of Romanticism and Impressionism to the more hard-edged modernism that would prevail in the 20th century. Less well known are his writings about music and the composer's craft. Although he wrote a major book on music theory published in 1903 (and translated into English a year later), his extended essays on composition, his fellow composers, and analysis have never appeared before in English. Christopher Anderson, a noted Reger scholar, has gone back to original manuscripts as well as the published versions of these writings to produce definitive new texts. Additionally, Anderson has written an opening essay placing Reger's writings and music in the context of his time. This volume will appeal strongly to those interested in the Late Romantic era, musical composition and aesthetics, and of course those interested in the music and life of Reger

Download or read book Max Reger and Karl Straube written by Christopher Anderson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Max Reger (1873-1916) is perhaps best-known for his organ music. This quickly assumed a prominent place in the repertory of German organists due in large measure to the efforts of Reger‘s contemporary Karl Straube (1873-1950). The personal and collegial relationship between the composer and performer began in 1898 and developed until Reger‘s death. By that time, Straube had established himself as an important artist and teacher in Leipzig and the central authority for the interpretation of Reger‘s organ music. The Reger-Straube relationship functioned on a number of levels with decisive consequences both for the composition of the music and its interpretation over a period fraught with upheaval on sociopolitical, religious and aesthetic fronts. This book evaluates the significance of the relationship between the composer and organist using primary source materials such as autograph performing manuscripts, reviews, programmes, letters and archival sources from contemporary organ building. The result is a much enhanced understanding of Reger in terms of performance practice and reception history, and a re-examination of Straube and, more broadly, of Leipzig as a musical centre during this period.

Book Twentieth Century Organ Music

Download or read book Twentieth Century Organ Music written by Christopher S. Anderson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores twentieth-century organ music through in-depth studies of the principal centers of composition, the most significant composers and their works, and the evolving role of the instrument and its music. The twentieth-century was a time of unprecedented change for organ music, not only in its composition and performance but also in the standards of instrument design and building. Organ music was anything but immune to the complex musical, intellectual, and socio-political climate of the time. Twentieth-Century Organ Music examines the organ's repertory from the entire period, contextualizing it against the background of important social and cultural trends. In a collection of twelve essays, experienced scholars survey the dominant geographic centers of organ music (France, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, the United States, and German-speaking countries) and investigate the composers who made important contributions to the repertory (Reger in Germany, Messiaen in France, Ligeti in Eastern and Central Europe, Howells in Great Britain). Twentieth-Century Organ Music provides a fresh vantage point from which to view one of the twentieth century's most diverse and engaging musical spheres.

Book Forming Intentional Disciples

Download or read book Forming Intentional Disciples written by Sherry A. Weddell and published by Our Sunday Visitor. This book was released on 2015-11-30 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we transmit a living, personal Catholic faith to future generations? By coming to know Jesus Christ, and following him as his disciples. These are times of immense challenge and immense opportunity for the Catholic Church. Consider these statistics for the United States. Only 30 percent of Americans who were raised Catholic are still practicing. Fully 10 percent of all adults in America are ex-Catholics. The number of marriages celebrated in the Church decreased dramatically, by nearly 60 percent, between 1972 and 2010. Only 60 percent of Catholics believe in a personal God. If the Church is to reverse these trends, the evangelizers must first be evangelized-in other words, Catholics-in-the-pew must make a conscious choice to know and follow Jesus before they can draw others to him. This work of discipleship lies at the heart of Forming Intentional Disciples, a book designed to help Church leaders, parish staff and all Catholics transform parish life from within. Drawing upon her fifteen years of experience with the Catherine of Siena Institute, Sherry Weddell leads readers through steps that will help Catholics enter more deeply into a relationship with God and the river of apostolic creativity, charisms, and vocation that flow from that relationship for the sake of the Church and the world. Learn about the five thresholds of postmodern conversion, how to open a conversation about faith and belief, how to ask thought-provoking questions and establish an atmosphere of trust, when to tell the Great Story of Jesus, how to help someone respond to God's call to intentional discipleship, and much more. And be prepared for conversion because when life at the parish level changes, the life of the whole Church will change.

What theological assumptions undergird the practice of Methodist worship in different cultural contexts? Is the liturgical heritage bequeathed by John Wesley and the early Methodists still honored in twentieth-century Methodist worship? How broadly has the twentieth-century liturgical movement influenced Methodist worship? Have Methodists made unique liturgical contributions in the establishment and evolution of "uniting" churches in Australia, Canada, or India? What are the implications of twentieth-century Methodist worship for evangelism and missions? These are some of the questions addressed in this volume, which examines the theological, historical, cultural, and practical implications of Sunday-morning worship as it is celebrated in churches around the world claiming Methodist/Wesleyan roots.

Book excerpt: Known for his orchestral, operatic and choral works, James MacMillan (b. 1959) appeals across the spectrum of contemporary music making. James MacMillan appeals across the spectrum of contemporary music making and is particularly celebrated for his orchestral, operatic and choral pieces. This book, published in time to mark the composer's sixtieth birthday, is thefirst in-depth look at his life, work and aesthetic. From his beginnings in rural Ayrshire and his early work with Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, through the international breakthrough success of The Confession of Isobel Gowdie, the continuing success of works such as the percussion concerto Veni, Veni, Emmaneul and his choral pieces, to his current position as one of the most prominent British composers of his generation, the book explores MacMillan's compositional influences over time. It looks closely at his most significant works and sets them in a wider context defined by contemporary composition, culture and the arts in general. The book also considers MacMillan's strong Catholic faith and how this has influenced his work, along with his politics and his on-going relationship with Scottish nationalism. With the support of the composer and his publisher and unprecedented access to interviews and previously unpublished materials, the book not only provides an appraisal of MacMillan's work but also insights into what it means to be a prominent composer and artist in the twenty-first century. PHILLIP A. COOKE is a Composer and Senior Lecturer and Head of Music at the University of Aberdeen. He has previously co-edited The Music of Herbert Howells for Boydell.
